I used to shoot weddings and senior portraits a lot, but I just got so tired of spending such a long time in PS after the events processing. So now I mostly only take random shots when my GF and I head out somewhere new. The events sure paid for some nice stuff though ^^
I’ll see if I cant pull up some of the photos I’ve got stored away.
I’ve been going through the stuff I had on my photobucket and there’s actually more than I thought… just have to sort it out.
The PS thing varies though… if it’s something I like, or photos I’m doing for a personal reason I really don’t mind spending 3+ hours on one photo… it’s just the constant “adjust levels, adjust contrast, make sure white balance is good, ect” for 500+ photos that you get with wedding or event photography like that.
If people ask I’ll usually go for it, just don’t advertize or anything for it anymore. It’s fun, and I do like shooting stuff like that on occasion, but doing an event like that every other week or month even can get to you.
Just kinda skimming through the thread it looks like a lot of you guys are using Canon and their speedlights for strobes…
I have a very stupid question that I cant seem to solve. I have a 580 that I use on occasion as a BG light. I only have 2 PW’s though so what I do is put my reciever on the 580 and that triggers my other strobes optically. The problem is that the 580 has the auto-shutoff function… so if I wait longer than a minute or two between shots it turns off and I have to go reset it so it can trigger the lights again. I know there’s a custom function to turn that function off but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to get to the custom functions menu on the 580…
lol. yea. this is one of those quarks that REI was talking about… going through tons of menus to access stuff.
what you do is: turn off master and slave mode by holding the “zoom” button and select “off”.
then hold the “C.fn” button down till the screen changes. it should show something like “Fn 00 0”
what youre looking for is “Fn 01 0”. use the jog wheel and turn it till it becomes “Fn 01 1”.
“Fn 01” is the auto power function. “0” is enabled and “1” is disabled. press “mode” when youre done and tada! youre done.
I use canon for paid work, and nikon for my personal stuff. My D70 just died, and I’m debating on getting it repaired or just investing in a newer body.:xeye:
I work for a pro-lab (meaning a lab that services pros, but doesn’t provide any sort of ‘retail’ services), and I do lots of misc photography there. Mainly catalog stuff, reference photography, and other ‘images for commerce’ type of work. It is kind of complicated, because technically, I’m not a photographer there, I’m a network administrator. I build and maintain the servers and workstations that the lab uses as my primary job, but I also have to do lots of training and consulting work with our clients so that they can get more done ‘in camera’ that will allow us to the the lions share of the post-processing and make sure that the photography that they are doing is optimized to our machines.
Also, my wife owns her own photography company, and she does event-type photography, and I shoot for her. She does mainly contract type of work for large organizations where she does portraits for hundreds of people at a time in one organization. My last couple of posts had set-up shots from a couple of my wife’s shoots. The one with the crayons and the ladder was for a school and the other was for little league. I’m the nikon shooter and she is the canon shooter, so when I’m shooting for her, I’m mostly shooting canon.
I posted this in GD and Tech Talk, but blooper gave me the great idea to ask you guys. It was so obvious after he said it. Y’all are the experts, and I’ll appreciate any input.
Just came back from a cruise. I had a ball acting a fool and documenting it with a Canon Powershot SD1000. Lots of fun was had, and tons of beautiful imagery was seen. All of it documented by this handy little camera stowed carefully in my pocket for easy access.
I then walk into the ocean like a dumbass.
…So, I’m looking to get a new camera in the low $100 range. Nothing too amazing but good enough to take crisp pictures and nice video quality. I know that y’all know your stuff. Share some of that wisdom, and let me know of a good choice.
Following are a couple that I found that look interesting. Let me know what you think:
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The prices may not show as I have them listed, but there are coupon codes yet to be added. Gotta be thrifty
first of all, only 2 of your links work. and it looks like youre on a short budget.
beside price, you should determine what else you need from your camera. so far, it seems like youre just looking for a point and shoot and nothing more. but, unlike DSLRs where you can buy a lense specifically for a job, point and shoots are all packaged into one camera. so answer thse questions before you decide:
what did you like about your old camera that youre trying to replace?
what didnt you like about your camera that youre trying to replace?
describe the type of photos you like to take with your camera. night time? day time? landscape? long/spy/upskirts?
after you answer those, it would be easier to find the right camera for you. =D
but realistically, 100 isnt a lot for a camera. if only you walked into the ocean a couple weeks earlier, i would have easily suggested getting the canon SD1100IS, which is the updated version of your camera for about 50 bux more than your budget. that would have been a no brainer since you were so happy with the camera to begin with. you might be able to find it at staples for about the same price.
Ahhh, some thought provoking ??s. it seems that I do not take photography as seriously as you do my friend, but I like that since you can therefore give me some sound advice.
*what did you like about your old camera that youre trying to replace? *
I like the fact that it had a view finder. I like the shutter control (ISO?) The size and weight were nice. Very crisp pictures. The fact that it didn’t need batteries and had its own lithium one.
*what didnt you like about your camera that youre trying to replace? *
Need a clearer video with better zoom properties. Maybe a wider angle. I would like a better image stabilization, even though it was not bad at that.
describe the type of photos you like to take with your camera.
I take a lot of action pics, or at least ones of moving targets. Also ones with a lot of targets that need to be focused (ie. group pictures or things in the fore and background.)
*night time? *
yup. mostly inside, but I don’t want to be limited at an outdoor concert or event.
*day time? *
for sure.
*landscape? *
Normally I would say no, but on this trip and others like it, I was definitely in need for that. Not necessary, but would definitely not be wasted if it were an option.
*long/spy/upskirts? *
YOU KNOW IT!!!
I hoped that helped you help me a little more.
You have talked me into it, I am willing to bump it up to anything under $150. I did like the first panasonic that you showed me.
can you hit me with some more options now that I gave you a couple more specifics. Thnx a lot. Also thanks to any1 else who can give some pointers as well.
depends what you intend on using the flash for. if its just for fill or just simple redirecting, SB600 should be enough for that. you can just use itto bounce light off ceilings or use as a fill light at events. those go for like 200-250.
otherwise you can go for vivitars. i hear those get a bit of praise for putting out lots of power. and theyre only about half the price of a dedicated flash.
oen advantage that i heard nikon has (confirm?) that canon doesnt have is the CLS system. it pretty much gives you the ability to trigger your speedlights remotely. kinda nice if youre getting into that strobist stuff.
The D40 doesn’t support commander mode of CLS like some of the other Nikon bodies. You have to use a SB800, SB900 or SU800 on the D40 to get CLS. Still, there is a ton of stuff you can do with bounce, and a SB600 isn’t a bad choice for the first flash on a D40.
