SRK Photographers Thread Vol. 1

I haven’t been doing anything much other than some sports. Took some wrestling pics and surf pics. I haven’t done anything lately, though. Had my gear for almost 1.5 years (About April 2007 is when I started) but I’ve been gone for almost a year with pre-deployment stuff and actual deployment. In that time the 40D and 50D have come out. I might try to get into portraiture or landscape. There’s always a lot of nice views in Okinawa, I just never bring a camera.

Actually… here’s some pictures from the local climbing gym with some friends. These are from this April between TDY’s.
Taken with 20D and a Tamron 17-50 2.8

I don’t think I really did anything other than run them through NeatImage.

Can’t wait to see those see those helicopter shots m00b. Are you forced to shoot through a window or is there an open door you can hang out?

Here are some random pics from the last couple of weeks. I have some other stuff
but I haven’t been able to update my flickr in a while.

I’ve finally gotten the hang of shooting football, but neither team from the colleges
our paper cover are going to the playoffs, so I’m a little late. Makes me want to
get a really fast telephoto prime, but then I remember how much they cost…

Another photo that would have benefitted from a longer lens, but I rarely ever shoot
surfing so it doesn’t bug me too much. Heavy cropping, so it’s a low-quality picure.

I’m looking forward to the end of the semester, because I’ll finally be done with being photo editor for my school’s paper. It turned out to be a much bigger headache than I was anitcipating. I learned stuff from it, but it held me back from being able to take the photos I wanted.

Next semester should be great though. I got a Canon 24 F1.4L a couple weeks ago and I’ll be getting a 5D in the mail on Tuesday, so I’ll finally have my dream setup. That along with me finally being able to drive and having a lot more free time should enable me to get some serious work done before I transfer to a university next year.

whatever youre using for the football photos seem to be fine.

That surfing shot looks awesome.

Here are some pictures from today with the G10. Not much happened today.
As for pictures from the sky, there were changes to the plan and rode in a transport helicopter instead of a Blackhawk. No open door rides for me this week, I guess. I was really looking forward to getting some good shots of Okinawa at dawn/dusk from the air.

So, I’m probably not going to get an answer before its too late, but I’m going to an ice sculpture exhibit in a few hours and I’m debating on whether or not to take my 20D.

The rooms that hold the sculptures are supposed to be around 9 degrees, and the exhibit will probably only take a little more than half an hour to get through.

I’ve read that the biggest danger to me is condensation, but considering that I will only be in this cold environment for less than an hour before returning to a warmer room (and its kind of cold out tonight), how much caution should I take? I hear that the best thing for me to do is warm the camera up gradually when I’m finished before taking it out again, or keep the camera warm while in the cold rooms.

Also, what’s the best method for keeping fog off the lens? And I’m assuming its a good idea to not change lenses while inside.

Just wanted to know if anyone had any advice… I want to take pictures but don’t want to break my camera. Thanks in advance, even if its answered after I get back!

i doubt youre going to be in such a situation where your camera will collect that much condensation. itll only happen if your camera experiences drastic temperature changes. so, unless youre taking your camera straight from the freezer to your 80 degree climate controlled car within a minute of time, youll be close to alright i think. i would say, if its worth the photos, then take it with you. take some pictures then take your time before you leave. so after the exhibit, take a walk around the building or grab a drink before you get back in your car.

definitely take your camera with you if the pictures are worth having.
your camera is solid, it should conform to its environments temperature quicker than a cup of water, so you dont need to wait for it to change temperature for more than 5 minutes.
i would imagine they prohibit flash.

bless you, sir, for the quick response! i didn’t see anything on the website faq about flashes, but i’ll bring one just in case. i think it will be worth it, since the risk doesn’t seem that great. i’ll post some pics this weekend. thanks again!

Blooper is correct. If you are worried about your gear, just throw a couple of silica gel packets in your camera bag.

Yeah, I was looking for some but couldn’t find any (I always throw them away… didn’t know what they were for before) :-(. I took some decent pics though. 9 degrees is a lot colder than I thought it would be. My fingers were numb.

looking forward to seeing those pix!

Hope they turned out okay… It was low light so I kept ISO at 800 and shot at my smallest aperture with shutter speed between 1/125 and 1/80 I think. I would’ve tried different settings but my face and hands were getting numb, haha. I should have prepared my body for the cold rather than just the camera. I’ll probably have time to post them this afternoon.

So, haven’t gone home from work yet, but I just heard about CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit). If you haven’t heard of it, its custom firmware that turns Canon P&S cameras to something more akin to an SLR. Here’s the list of what it can do (only certain Canon P&S can use it though):

I’m going to try this out on my brother’s Canon Powershot this weekend. I’m glad I found this cause I need to buy a P&S soon, and now I don’t have to worry about sacrificing features for convenience. Anyone use this already?

sounds like a cool experiment. glad you found someone elses camera to test it on instead of your own. hahaha.

Yeah, haha. At first, I loaded it up (very easy to do) and said, “Look, you can change aperature and shutter speed!” and he said, “I could already do that”. Oh. There’s more I have to mess with but I’ll let you know how it turns out.
Here are some pics from “ICE! at Gaylord Palms”. Let me know if I posted too many and I’ll edit it…

These were actually made of ice, too! Cool.

I’m pretty sure this one is not ice.

Had a last minute idea for Christmas Card Photos w/ my daughter, but I think the concept was better than the execution :-/. I tried to use a flash with barn doors as kind of a “spotlight”, but had some technical difficulties and this was the best I could get with a toddler that didn’t want to stay in one place.

In hindsight, I should have used a second flash + reflector to light the other side of her face. :frowning:

The gel on my “spotlight” started peeling back, so the lighting is 2 different shades on this one. And the blanket wasn’t supposed to be part of the shot.

And this one was kind of an accident as she tried to get away…

And without the flash:

I think some of these shots (and some others… don’t want to flood the thread with the shots) were decent, so we’re probably going to use them for the Christmas cards. Any suggestions for what I could have done better are welcome :-D. I think I’m going to buy a gridspot for next time though.

I don’t have any suggestions, but your daughter is too cute!

I don’t think it wants reflector fill. I think it needs either a rim light or cross light so that you get a little definition in the black hair on the black background. Given the exposure, even a flashlight hitting her hair from behind would be enough. Other than that, I don’t really have any suggestions.

Thanks, DDC!

And, Rei, thanks again. I see what you mean cause lighting her face would ruin the effect I was going for, but lighting her hair would help shape it against the background. Duly noted!
