SRK Newbie Saikyo Dojo Execution Guide (read me!)

Do you guys think that any people have trouble linking attacks is because of the choice of buttons in their TE Stick? I mean, the sanwas buttons are somewhat too sensitive for many, but thats just me

Sensitive buttons are a good thing. The biggest reason people have problems with links is a lack of practice.

then im in luck

great guide

What do you set the dummy (i.e auto block, no block, random block) on to practice linking?

Thanksā€™

Thanks a lot for this guide to helping us lower end players level up. Iā€™m working to break through the button mashing plateau (old habits die hard), and Iā€™ve just about got there. Iā€™m sure this has been referenced a ton, but the Vesper tutorials were massively helpful for this. YouTube - VesperArcadeā€™s Channel

Help with Links

Great guideā€¦very helpful info in it. Iā€™m just having some additional issues troubleshooting links.

I recently switched over to a stick, after playing on a controller all my life (Iā€™m new to SSF4 though). I started off with Dudley, and Iā€™m trying to do a standard c.lp, c.lp, s.hk xx Heavy Machine Gun Blow.

Now I understand that I need to link from the c.lp to the s.hk in order to be able to cancel out to the Machine Gun. My problem is that when the Machine Gun doesnā€™t come out, Iā€™m not sure if I didnā€™t link properly, or if I didnā€™t cancel after the s.hk fast enough.

Any help? Even if I break down the combo, Iā€™m never sure if Iā€™m properly linking c.lp, c.lp, s.hk or just canceling through. Ideally Iā€™d like to nail the timing on those 3 before I try to add on the Machine gun.

Great guide. I only picked up SSF4 a week or two ago have been struggling with executing ultras. Not really sure when to start pressing kick/punch but I guess I must be pressing them too early/late.

Go into training mode and set the dummy to constantly spam an anti-air move then just try and practice what works best. Check out character specific videos too.

Iā€™m new to marvel. how is a tri-dash preformed? so i can start practicing it on my stick. any idea if tri-dash will be preformed the same way in MVC3? also, are there other things I should practice? thanks

Quick question: can you block an Ultra or a Super move?

Yes, unless itā€™s a grab.

Not being able to cancel off a normal you can normally cancel from is only a problem with chains. So if you wanted to say, do c.lp > c.lp x Light MGB, you would have to link the two c.lps instead of chaining them. c.lp > s.HK isnā€™t a chain, so if youā€™re able to connect that you should be able to cancel into MGB off the HK. Chaining the two c.lps before linking into the s.HK wonā€™t change that.

Iā€™d recommend just going into training mode and doing s.HKxMGB until you get the feel for when to cancel it down. The cancel should be the easiest part of the combo, so worry about that first, then do it with the c.lps

Button Layouts

why do people turn off their all punch and all kick shortcut buttons?

  1. So that they donā€™t get errant moves if they press them accidentally.
  2. So that they can use them to perform ā€œfakeā€ moves if their opponent is sitting next to them. Some player listen to the sound of their opponentā€™s buttons to help with their reactions.

Awesome thread!

Sorry sbout this question guys, but I need to know If I want to get better at SSFIV. Is it manditory to learn plinking and double tapping? I donā€™t know how to do it at all, but If so, how do I know when to do it? Or when is the best time to use it? I main Ryu

I agree; very nice guide.

Iā€™ve recently got back into fighting games with SSF4 and like the game so much that i purchased a stick to play it with. Iā€™ve been using it two months and i have to say itā€™s been a mixed bag. I played Akuma when using the controller before and felt pretty comfortable using him, but now on the stick i have all sort of problems executing his moves and links consistently. i also find that quarter circle motions facing the right side are harder than facing the left, which means matches with any characters that have these motions usually end badly. I saw someone else post not to ride the gate for the motions but itā€™s kinda hard not to. The only good things iā€™ve found so far is that iā€™ve picked up Bison and balrog (charge characters) and have gotten pretty decent with them.

How can i feel more comfortable doing these circle motions from the left side? How many (more) hours do i have to practice?

How can you feel more comfortable? By spending more time in training mode. How long will it take? I canā€™t tell you. Everyone is different.
