Ive come to realize that 90 percent of people that play fighting games now dont really care about having fun. The only part about any fighting game that is fun to these people is the part when they win. If they dont win they dont have fun. Thats why people that are pretty much an even match for you wont accept your friends request. They know they wont win every time so whats the point?

But you have to understand that with these people thats not the way they look at it. Most of these people will never leave their house to play any fighting game so the most important thing to them is getting high on the ranking list. They come across someone that is 100 times better than them and they dont see it as a challenge to be met or even that they may learn something. They think about how their rank is going down and down. So they seek out easier prey.
Honestly, I think the worst thing for fighting games is the internet. Not internet play, but forums and videos of games. Takes a lot of the reason to even play the games out and all thats left is to win. You dont have to sit there for hours trying to figure out an infinite with whoever anymore. You simply have to look it up on the internet, find it, practice it for 30 minutes and thats it. You dont have to play with your friend who’s really really good with [insert character] long enough to figure out how to beat him. You go online and find out who he’s weak against, look up a strategy to beat that character and thats that.
Or you can just simply flip open the “fully-fleshed-out-before-release” guide, and just look up what the best assists for your character are, and then proceed to limit the pool of teams that way.
Or else not… and get owned all day by those who do.

About the only thing he ever did that was of merit was, as you stated, buck a few of the conventions of standard U.S. fantasy fare (of the time).
Beside showing thick-lensed basement dwelling nerds that there was more to life than the Dungeon Master’s Guide normally allowed, much like an 80s version of The Allegory of The Cave, but far less profound (they never left their basements, but some did imagine beyond the borders of Middle Earth), what exactly did Salvatore do to improve modern fantasy?
