A book is something the author came up with from start to finish (fiction) or base off a true story (non fiction).
A fan fiction is a twist on the author’s original story.
It’s called a fan fiction because the “fan” of the book/story is rewriting it. It’s not a completely new piece of work.

I never said a thing about rewriting or movies… Lucas has nothing to do with them other than name with most of the books. I just used Star Wars as an example, there are tons of books out there that are continuations on a movie or TV series like say after the show happens. Technically they’re fanfics but they’re still also books. Sticking with Star Wars in the books Luke goes on to reform the Jedi Council etc, that’s not rewriting the story it’s adding to it.
