Seriously though, I am pretty middle of the line as far as politics go. I reject conservatives but I reject liberals too. I think its magical thinking on republican part that they can decrease the deficit without doing something about tax loopholes, and its magical thinking on the part of democrats that entitlements are economically sustainable.
Flat tax makes a lot of sense for many reasons. I haven’t really heard a good argument against it, other than “it screws over poor people”. Its also the simplest solution by far, and god knows there is too much red tape in the government.

I don’t know why you’re looking for a new solution to taxes when they were fine prior to the changes made by Reagan and every republican president after him. Those same presidents also contributed hugely to the deficit.

well, that’s a pretty big argument against it. In terms of efficiency, you can’t beat a flat tax, but you have to also consider equity (fairness). It puts an unfair tax burden on the poorest people and they grossly outnumber rich people. If your goal is to just collect as much tax revenue as efficiently as possible, then sure a flat tax is the way to go. But if you’re actually concerned about increasing the overall well-being of as many people as possibly, it’s pretty awful.
as a student of economics, I’m told that taxes are horrible in general (I won’t go into the details), but I tend to think that if you’re going to tax people, then the bulk of the tax incidence should fall on those with the greatest ability to pay. obviously those people will disagree, and they tend to have more political power to have their way.
