if your parents are self-employed though you can claim whatever poverty type figure you want as their income and get pell grants and shit.
I’m not eligible for anything since my dad apparently makes too much. It doesn’t take the fact that I have 3 siblings into account and my dad has to use that money to provide for 6.

I’m not a dependent though, and they didn’t ask me for my family income at any point just mine. I live with my parents for the free rent, but I don’t get shit from them other than that. It doesn’t make sense for me to move out to get a bigger student loan, that’s just retarded.
I think I might be getting screwed over because I own a relatively expensive car and they’re counting it as an asset. I need it to get to school cause I live in buttfuck nowhere, but even if I sell it and get an old clunker that’s still nowhere near enough. My transportation costs alone are probably going to be around $400/month between gas and insurance. My tuition is $6500, probably another G for books, and we’ll say a modest food/entertainment/random shit budget of $200/month. I don’t know how they expect an unemployed person to come up with that kind of money, and I’m sure as hell not going to be working while going to school.

Why do you own an expensive car if you can’t pay your tuition? Of course they’re going to count that as an asset - why wouldn’t they?
Oh, strange; down here it’s different. If you own a car, it can be used as collateral etc, which helps to define it as an asset.

I would count it as an asset though. Maybe because I’m from NYC, but there is still public transport, walking and bicycles. A car isn’t as needed as some think. Especially in zombie apocalypses.

it’s technically an asset, but in my case it’s a necessity. Trading it in for a cheaper car won’t even get me all that much money. Plus I just paid the damn thing off, no way in hell am I getting rid of it now. I love that car more than I love my own mother.
