Pluralizing Acronyms ending in “S”…how do you do it?
First…the accepted rule for general acronyms is to just add a straight “s” to the end, with no apostrophe. Otherwise it confuses pluralization with possession. For example…
Good: There are a lot of SOBs in here.
Bad: There are a lot of SOB’s in here.
Good: That SOB’s cooking is delicious.
Now…what do you do with acronyms ending with the letter “S”? For example, POS. What is the plural of POS?

I have actually no idea which is the “proper” way to do it. I’ve found literature that supports all three as the correct option. (1) and (2) look really weird to me, but (3) messes with the possessive. (ie. Conflicts with a sentence like “That SOS’s signal is strong.”) Generally common use trumps actual grammar rules as well, but none of these seems right to me. But in these cases it’s usually might makes right, so I’m curious as to what the majority says.
Consider also what happens when you combine plural with possessive. (ie. “All those POSs’ dishes are delicious!”) Assuming we just add an apostrophe by itself at the end of a word ending in “s” to indicate possession…

The last word in that acronym is “shit.” Since there’s no “s” at the end, you would have to add it at the end when describing a group.

FF6 is my favourite Final Fantasy. Not of the post-SNES era FFs have come close to its character and story depth. Also, best villain is Kefka. Only one that comes close is 7. Yeah, yeah it’s overrated but I still like it.

Well my thinking is that the acronym actually becomes a word on its own, it’s not like a mathematical formula where you can expand the acronym out into its component words. That defeats the purpose of even using an acronym to start with.
Or are you saying that’s how everything should be done, like on a case by case basis? Like pluralization rules for Giant Hairy Mice (GHM -> GHM) would be different for Giant Hairy Rats (GHR -> GHRs)? Does that make sense…?

What if my intention was to convey how I actually believe they were made specifically out of a combined form of shit from multiple source assholes instead of just one single asshole, ie. a single malt shit. Maybe that was a bad example. The point is to use a completely generic, generalized, hypothetical acronym - we are determining theoretical grammatical rules, right? You have an acronym…say it’s ABIS. Without knowing what it means, what’s the plural form?
