That moment when you meet with the CEO for an interview for a dream job, and everything goes well. He even sets up a time to meet in for a second interview. You think everything is cool right? Well, I did too, until dude straight ghosted me and hired someone else. I mean, can’t a nigga get an email, a tweet or somethin? The kicker is, that when he asked me for my rate per hour ($30/hr part time, $50/hr full time), he thought it was great and accepted.

This was supposed to be my time. Like a nigga legit destroyed that interview, I was killing it. Like I was proud of myself at how far I had come in life to meet with a CEO and be considered an asset.

Words can’t express the levels of salt I am feeling right now. I’m sure just from reading this you probably can feel the salty oozing from these words.

That’s how I felt when I got that “Fuck You” email from Apple. You got to that point, so consider it an accomplishment. You’ll have more opportunities.

Just got word from my recruiter that the people from Bombardier. The job out in Tuscon Arizona, want to have a phone interview with me this Thursday afternoon. So looks like I’ll be back on my feet making money soon. But I damn sure am not looking forward to a summer in Arizona. I don’t think I’m ready for that kind of heat. I’ve never felt triple digits before.

So, wait. They have a hard time finding a publisher because of what they are writing about, rather than their race itself?

You want them to not get in the door because of their race?

I want them to sell novels.

Publishing is overwhelmingly white, and the readers they hire to assess which novels to purchase are also white. When they read works from minority writers who come from a background they don’t understand, they push it aside and reject it. If they even get a meeting, sometimes the execs at the publishing house will still reject it because they think it’ll flop. Authors several times quote the person who says it saying “readers just can’t relate to your story.”

It’s pretty stupid. I mean, you don’t have to publish a book and invest millions into it. Make a small print run of a couple thousand copies, pay the author like $60-100K (LOL if that), and see how it goes. It might be a commercial flop but critics may end up loving it.

It’s funny because a lot of those self-published “hood” novellas do pretty good sales numbers. The movie and TV industry went through the same thing and is only just now realizing that White audiences don’t automatically ignore things created by Black people (e.g. Scandal, Empire, How to Get Away with Murder, et al)
