the whole conversation is idiotic in reply to a joke post. if you actually traveled to tournaments for mvc2 around the country that list is sorta right, or at least the amount. plenty of examples of low/lowish tier teams beating top tier teams being played by people who’ve placed top 8 at other times (who of course didn’t place that time because they got beat by team VDO or by megaman/cable/blackheart). spiral winning evo 2005 too.
definitely correct about someone not understanding the mvc2 tournament scene, that’s for sure. clarifying exactly what’s being argue would help. in general you can’t even argue about the game the same being a team game and also always having some chance involved. you saw a lot more than just a locked 8 charas (from SG) in mvc2 tournaments at EVO, SB, FR, or other tourneys.

How many Evos, SBR, ECT, NEC, and SB tournaments did Cammy, Tron, Megaman, Blackheart, Strider, Doom win? Spiral has the best record there but that’s about it. Just because people are taking these to tournaments and putting in a fuckload of works doesn’t somehow make them more viable than God Tier 4 plus assist.
I’ve seen plenty of people take shit to tournaments that they shouldn’t. Doesn’t suddenly turn that into a tournament quality choice.

The only reason why a low-tier team wins against a top-tier team in MvC2 is because the person playing the top-tier team has no idea about the matchup. Its a big surprise that most dont expect. Then that surprise fades and that low-tier team gets fucked.
Look at it this way: SF4 is the Obama of fighting games and Obama is the SF4 of presidents. Incidentally this makes Virtua Fighter the Kennedy of fighting games: As soon as it gets going, it dies.
that’s what I mean, you’re arguing about something no one is talking about. I don’t keep up with SG info, but from the sound of it they were talking about the game only having 8 charas for use throughout all tourneys for the whole tourney. we’re not talking about winning 1st.
if we keep it simply to what was said, what characters you see at tournaments, then those lists were sorta correct (I’d prob change around some charas).
if this game had a lot more time, or more people had sort of the JP mentality, or more of the hometown “low” tier heroes could travel I would say the game would evolve even more. plenty of characters you may not see (especially if you’re just a stream monster and don’t actually travel and participate) have cheap shit too that can and have beat top teams from top players. they have more weaknesses but the matchups are given up on too quickly. but that’s all theory which is not a good road to go down which is why it’s good to keep to what was actually mentioned. you see a lot of other characters at tournaments, and not just from 1person. not only that but they beat top tier teams from top players who’ve been in top 8 at least once
and no it’s not a matter of not being used to the matchup. there’s a lot more cheap shit in the game aside from tops. ones where 1 mistake can seriously cost you. or they just get outplayed. even then that’s not what’s being talked about and when it comes to mvc2 there’s a lot of undiscovered or unplayed depth and evolution. it’s just with so many charas and how strong the gods are that section of it grew much too quickly too allow the other parts to grow with how the tourney scene is for mvc2. though I would also say there still are plenty of charas who are just shit (don’t really have that much cheap shit).
KoF has always been a (Mostly) great series, it just took Capcom taking a dump on it’s own series for anyone who isn’t Mexican or Chinese to pay attention. XIII is one of the best I’ve played, and I take great pride in knowing most Post-SSFIV players will find doing actual combos to difficult to waste time on.

marvel vs capcom 2 is the reason I am a member of this website and have a highly prestigious join date. it is one of the greatest games i have ever played in my life. i don’t want to hear any scrubs whining about only a few viable characters. all i ever needed and wanted was cable. seeing the dynamic between a good cable who is dictating the match by controlling space versus a rush down character is the most beautiful thing you can ever witness in your life.
then i wait for many years, marvel 3 comes out, and i find out it uses the godawful tvc button setup. a part of me died. all i know is that marvel 2 made me a better human being. i learned that if i worked hard i could succeed. my only regret was not playing after i graduated. as a result i am not able to beat pablo anymore even though he plays a shitty team comp involving collosus, which is hella embarassing, given i used to be able to peace him out while dicking around with low tiers like guile. however I am happy to say that I have beaten AT LEAST ONCE, every single celebrity in washington state. i might have lost a shit ton of money doing so, but I still did it. and damn that feels good.

I love mvc2 so much and wish it had more life, or I started playing sooner (though I would definitely take playing for the last half of it’s life over playing only for the first half, new shit all the time in this game). hate barely losing my chance to 0-2 jwong at that one SB tourney from some simple things from outside of the game that 1 more year of tourney exp would’ve hardened.
I also wish it had a good next gen port with sticks I could actually play on. sucks going back and forth with top players, low and high tier, in and out of tournament with a stick I could hardly execute on (DC was such a crap system). if I could bring my 300% technical skill that I have on TEs (or had at the arcades where I learned to play) back to DC a lot of those barely losses would’ve been decided imo but oh well. it was still fun.
those last few days on XBL mvc2 with anak/thanos/sonson against all challengers was a fun personal send off for me.
