politics in my ‘country’ are pretty messed up right now. you have the Basic Law which states (basically) that HK is responsible for its own shit and doesnt have to answer to Beijing; yet the leaders here are constantly kissing ass to the mainland government and flailing around in terror lest they offend a highly placed official in Beijing.
for example, there were a few guys who got exiled from China for participating or helping to organize the tianamen square protests; and by exiled i mean they ran away so they didn’t get fucking shot or jailed for life. so one of them died in HK I guess and the other wanted to come pay his visits at his funeral (the two were close). he promised to only stay for two days, that he wouldn’t talk to newspapers or reporters for any reason, nor would he participate in any sort of political activity; it was purely to pay his respects to a close friend who had passed away, and to the family. doesn’t sound too dangerous, right?
well the mainland government basically told HK “it’s your city do what you want”; so the HK government refused to let him come in. why? no official reason was given; his visa was just denied. when asked, they refused to answer. the truth of course is that the ambitious careerist politicians here are falling over themselves to polish Beijing’s knob in every way possible so they won’t do anything that could offend them in the slightest.
the government is very economically prudent (read: stingy) which is a good thing I guess, they don’t waste money, but when you’re sitting on a 600 billion surplus that keeps getting added to every year, it makes people question why you’re taking that cash in the first place if you don’t really need it. meanwhile, housing prices are some of the most expensive in the entire world, and unless you’re wealthy it’s almost impossible to get your own place.
politics here are very active and the people go to the streets during election season like crazy. we got guys throwing bananas and water bottles in the legislative council (i’m looking at you, Long Hair!), we got people getting into fights in the streets, marching with banners, etc. democracy is strong here and a lot of HKers are very touchy about the thought of losing what they consider a privilege position to mainland tyranny.
oh and the pollution is fucking awful and the government seems to be completely incapable of doing anything meaningful to fix it.
