I need to watch more movies and read more of the movie thread. I like reading about things like this, that I have very little knowledge of the behind the scenes and depth that goes into making movies.
Also AL can you give me a run down of some of your favorite comics?
“It’s not as if the product had any integrity to begin with.” - Mitch Hedberg
As the urban youths say, “True dat.”
There are two hairs in the soup that come with any expression of opinion.
One: the opinion is inextricably bound to the idiosyncrasies of the individual expressing it. Some of those idiosyncrasies are externalized as criteria. Some of them are subtler and less understood.
Two: not all opinions are created equal. An individual who has seen 100 movies is not as informed and has access to less evidence than an individual who has seen 1,000 movies–and the quality of an opinion is largely determined by the evidence that backs it up.
Or, to put it another way, opinions themselves are not factual, but an opinion that doesn’t have a basis in fact is worthless.
If you like something and you have a curious mind, there is a lot to be learned through discussion–both from alternate perspectives you might not have considered, and from aspects of your own opinion that you otherwise wouldn’t have fully formulated.
There’s a difference between having an open debate over the merits of a film and convincing someone their opinion is trash. One is a direct attack on the person and the other is the basis of discussion and discourse. I’m not attacking anyone for thinking Spaceballs is better than Shaun or YF, however, I am engaging in a debate explaining my stance and why I feel the film is better.
Thanks! I haven’t missed out on many of the ones you named, when you named one guy and I hadn’t heard of him I was sorta upset. I consider myself a decent follower of all things stand up. Trying to get a group together to go see Louie CK when he is in Cleveland. Chelsea Peretti and Amy Shumer :lovin:
Well, I guess because I look at everything from and objective stand point I can see why someone else may like something that I dont. And when its something as trivial as movie I just dont give a fuck why they like, or dislike it. Just like them nasty candies that dude wants in his Oreo’s. He likes that shit and I dont. I dont give a fuck and I dont need to discuss or debate the merits of those candies.
I know that artsy fartsy movie goers think that discussing such things makes them more…intellectual. Most of the time they just look like arrogant douchebags. imo
If you are a fan of all things stand-up, I suggest checking out some of the podcasts put on by standups, specifically WTF with Marc Maron, you Made It Weird with Pete Holmes, The Nerdist, Never Not Funny (pay podcast), Doug Loves Movies, Sklarbros Country and Comedy Bang Bang.
It’s more a problem of the female comedians that get noticed. Really, most comedians fall in to a category, it’s just most male categories appeal to you. By the way, I missed quite a few comedians (specifically about their standup, not movie.tv careers):
Jim Gaffigan
Patton Oswalt
Brian Posehn
Maria Bamford
Zach Galifianakis
Dave Chapelle
Chris Rock
Yeah, I’m more an alt-comedian fan. It’s not that I don’t enjoy them or think they are funny, but they don’t stick with me the way some other comedians do. Also, admittedly, I’m not as familiar with tehir work…
I have a profound hatred for Mitch Hedberg. Couldn’t tell you why. You would think it was the combination of finding him to be not funny and people constantly telling you he is. It goes far beyond that. I was legitimately glad he died too. I was still heavily anti-drugs when he died, so the news of his death is definitely one of the highest points of schadenfreude I’ve ever felt.
I seriously hate that guy.
RockB, it’s Brubaker not Bendis that came up with Winter Soldier.
Was it SoVi3t that hates Mel Brooks? Yeah, I think it was. Wackest Whitey.
