They serve no purpose any more. They are there simply because they always have been, and effect the game in no way shape or form.
And yet, if you remove them, there would be hell to pay.
Besides, as I understand it, the new 3DS one actually put a new reason for coins other than the 1-up and the fact above.
If they take them out, people will bitch.
Apparently people will bitch if they stay in. But then people complain about anything in games these days.
The Mushroom Kingdom economy is dependent on the free flow of coins. Take them away and you create a system where 99% of the coins belong to 1% of the kingdom, limiting it to the Princess and the rich that surround her.

But Mario is the oppressor. He is the robber baron of the mushroom kingdom. Think about it, its the mushroom kingdom, and there are some good, (white) mushrooms that work for the princess, the ugly, short and dark mushrooms? Curb stomped to death. He takes all of the wealth of a community (level) and keeps it for himself. The money invested in the infrastructure? He takes the money and destroys the very bricks of civilization. He even salts the earth by either taking, or killing the local flora and fauna (ie pirana plants) Why do you think you don’t see wild Tanuki’s? He kills them for sport and wears their hide like a barbarian. Occasionally, somebody rises up against the monarchy and what happens? Mario comes along kills them, and then kills their family to send a message.
But they aren’t. They give you 1-ups. That’s a point. It’s not that big of a deal considering that yes, you get continues and saves, but the real reason is that any seasoned Mario vet won’t have a hope to burn through 'em. Continues/Saves have been in Mario since SMW. And yet the coins survived beyond that. They actually built the continue/save logic into the game with that in mind, considering that even today, saving only is allowed at certain checkpoints (mid-world and end-world), and continues would kick you back to your last save. If you’re a shitty gamer, bet on needing those lives, or in the case of NSMBWii, play it 4-player and watch how fast you burn through lives (that’s where the fun in that game really is anyway).
Also, why are you bitching about a nostalgia item in a game that in itself IS nostalgia incarnate? The sole reason the 2D Mario games (hell, even the 3D Marios) exist today is entirely because of nostalgia, so bitching about coins still being around is kinda retarded.
You don’t save at checkpoints. Lives are there so if you die during a stage, you either start from the beginning or at the checkpoint. If you lose all your lives, you have to start over again.

No, there are world checkpoints as well, where saving occurs in games past SMW. In SMW it was fortresses/castles/ghost houses, and in the New SMB games, it’s fortresses and castles.
Those would be save points. Checkpoints happen inside of stages and are temporary.

What you’ve essentially asked is “Why are there extra lives in Mario games?” If you’ve played New Super Mario Bros Wii,it should be fairly obvious that continues and extra lives do not serve the same function, especially in a multiplayer game.
