do any of you know how much does ionic activity affect reaction rates, and how can i relate that to reaction coefficients?

i’m modeling a simple batch reactor in which trace amounts of phenolphthaline § is added and reacted with NaOH that’s in excess of 10^3. Its psuedo first order , and the reaction will reach an equilibrium where the amount of [POH]- is greater than that of [P] (giving me a colorless solution). So I know that I need two reaction constants to accurately simulate the data I collected with this batch reactor im modeling.

I have my overall K value, and I calculated k1 and k2 using an extrapolated k1/k2 log plot value from absorbance data, the equilibrium absorbance value, etc.

I’ve done this for all three situations, 0g NaCl, 10g NaCl, 14g NaCl

all my models fit my data within a margin of + or - .02 (the range being 1 to 0, so they are at least accurate in representing my actual data.

how can I relate the activity coefficient to my new k1 and k2 values? and can i use activity coefficient in conjunction with my original k values I derived from the baseline experiment to plug into my equations to simulate the results I got from using NaCl?

I’ve tried using the values I got from activity coefficient as a scalar factor in my original equations, but they don’t match

I know that huckel-debeye theory states that electrolytic solutions behave as if they have less ions than they do (affecting reaction rate and or pH levels), but they also stabilize intermediate species (in my case i’m assuming that the resonant structures of P- are more favored and stabilized by the excessive - ions, and the OH- ions released from the P are stabilized by the Na ions from the salt, thus moving the reaction forward) in a way which the reaction favors the product.

I know that you can calculate overall ionic activity by taking the summation of ionic constant as; sum (.5* (+)^m (-)^n * M)

I’ve calculated it two ways, assuming that every single ion contributes to net ionic activity, and that only the salt should be used to calculate ionic strength
you then find activity coefficient, and then use that coefficient to calculate the actual amount of moles available for reaction.

its here where i’m lost and i’m not sure how to relate ionic activity with my k value or my models. I know that activity has to affect K in some fashion, but i’m not sure how to bridge the values in a meaningful way

It’s been a while since I touched the Debye-Huckel equations, but if I recall correctly you should have the concentrations in the rate laws replaced with the activity. So if your rate equation is normally something like

d[A]/dt = -k[A]

You would instead replace [A] with the activity which I will denote using {A}

d[A]/dt = -k{A} = -k a [A]

Where “a” is the activity coefficient of A. So what you should be measuring for the rate constant using normal rate models is a mash of both the normal rate constant and the activity coefficients. If you were to calculate the rate constant for each of your trials if it were completely ideal you should see the effective rate constant have a linear relationship to the activity coefficients with a slope that is equal to the rate constant.

But I would think in many systems you should expect to see non-linear behaviour since the ionic species can actively lower/raise the free energy barrier which in turn would change the rate constant.

I would have to go and read some of the literature on this since I don’t typically do these kinds of equations, but that’s what I can come up with off the top of my head. If you look up the Kinetic Salt Effect you might be able to find some more information on it.

But wouldn’t that cause an iconic reaction and supplement it in a defibrillator? What you need to do is replace your K values

I try not to use the word “literally” given the absurd amount of misuse it gets, like “unique”, but I literally have never seen anyone dispute this claim. Arab and Persian (and Kurdish) people in general tend to be above average looking; it is just their cultures and governments currently suck and not in the good way. The only real exception at present is Jordan unfortunately; the Kurds are also largely exempt if we include the parenthetical.

thanks, ill do it this way then and see if i can get something better than what I did.

What i did was use assume gibs free energy was equivocal to chemical potential (i know its not, but its close enough to it), and did

G(real) = u(ideal) + RTln{A}

then G(real)/G(ideal) = some ratio constant that should make my k(ideal) * constant= k(salt), they don’t equal exactly because I need to use the extended version of the law, but its within range. Thanks again
