Regardless, yeah, Johnny Cash has one of the few country singers whose (few) songs I’ve heard that I actually like. I suppose I “like” country since I’ve listened to a lot of Fleetwood Mac, but I’m not sure how much they count. Still prefer country to rap; haha, I remember the last time I said this that I made RockBogart shake his head–it’s not my fault (modern) rap sucks.

I know this was likely rhetorical, but what Shaft Agent posted is actually a 1998 TV two-part mini-series that was on NBC or ABC initially alongside what Shaft Agent said. It was rather decent, surprisingly.

Old country is essentially an outgrowth of old blues. White artists preferred the former label because the latter label was associated with black artists.
I would say both genres (really, 1.5 genres during the early days of Cash’s generation, since country and blues essentially described the same thing until the 1950s) have some associations with folk, in that it’s often either solely performed or led by a singer with an acoustic instrument. But I would say that while Cash certainly touches upon elements of folk–the traditional working class aspects, the storytelling, etc.–he is, first and foremost, a country artist. Always complaining about shit going wrong in his life.
