I always do this with the shape counting riddles, but I apparently always miss one. I got 40. If treating the square size that would make that look like a 4x4 grid as size 1, I get:
8 size 0.5 (tiny squares near the center)
18 size 1 (16 from the 4x4 grid + 2 assembled from the tiny squares)
9 size 2 (2x2 size 1s)
4 size 3 (3x3 size 1s)
1 size 4 (4x4 size 1s)
If it’s instead 41, what square is my addled mind (thanks to the joys of fatherhood) am I missing?

Convoluted? It’s common sense. Just look at the picture. There’s only 4 different sizes of square in the picture: the big square incasing everything, the outer ones (example the one on the top left), the inner squares of the 2 squares in the middle and then the 2 squares in the middle themselves. You can’t count the ones the 2 middle squares touch because it turns them into hexagons (aka a six sided polygon) which, last time I checked, doesn’t constitue as a square.
