SRK Lounge 14 Vancouver Riot Update: RockB Curbstomps an old Granny, her cat and her knit sweater

those two youtube videos had me loling

I can’t be the only person who cringed like crazy while watching that backflip nutshot, right?

I can’t say I’m a fan of the new look. I mean, presentation goes far, and I don’t know what to think on this.

Thanks. I might have to go see that in person now. Come to think of it, a trip to cali wouldn’t be such a bad thing in itself.

-Starhammer-

When you can’t do awesome shit like flipping off roofs, the next best thing for showing your expendability is subjecting yourself to having your nuts stomped back up your pelvis.

He back flipped Rock.

Accuracy always matters. Back Flips>>>>>Front Flips. The nut stomping is just a hilarious after moment.

(12 hours wasted. Wasted. Wasted!)

Sigh. There has to be a trope name for instance when you try to do shit but pretty much everyone wants you suddenly do something for them then and there when they could do it their fucking selves or otherwise are inconsiderate. “Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere” doesn’t fit it.

Heh, true. I doubt that Dhalsim vs. Yun is bad as is it looks. If it is, then…damn, but I doubt that it’s going to end up getting either character changed like they were forced to change Seth. Hell, even if it was as bad as pre-AE Seth vs. Zangief, I doubt it would get changed just because Seth vs. Zangief rounds tended to be like 40+ seconds of running away, while Dhalsim vs. Yun seems like the entire match is over in 40 seconds.

Rushdown makes things more “exciting” after all.

looks at Wolverine in MvC3

Completely unrelated, but I already miss the Sailor Jupiter avatar.

I’m pretty much just going off of memory, which is especially faulty when I never hear or see anyone talk about, so all I remember is that she died in a plane crash that I’m pretty sure was avoidable because she wanted to get home for the holidays or something. So, yeah, feel to correct me given that it happened at least a decade ago.

Otherwise, given the videos I watched last night, I have to agree about her voice. I remember it sounding better.

Specs didn’t like it. Or liked it with reservations. Whatever.

I don’t know. There are things in the universe that I will never understand, and this would be one of them.

There are certain benefits to working on a standalone, non-canon title, and I think All Star worked wonderfully in those conditions. In the main books, though… I don’t think it would work for very long without some kind of executive order that screwed up everything.

“True dat,” as they say.

Why reboot? 1. To preserve the status quo. 2. To be able to remake stories that proved successful in the past. 3. To tinker with this and that, in an effort to hunt down a fantasy combination of story elements that will please everybody.

This has been DC’s main fallback strategy for a long time now. The thing is, it hasn’t worked for a long time, which raises the question: why? Why stick with it? What good can come of it?

And the whole time, they continue to print stories in an obsolete and highly limiting format, sell them in obsolete direct market shops, and market them almost exclusively to a shrinking audience that would be shrinking even faster if not for its (pardon the pun) comically low standards.

And DC’s brilliant answer is to reboot again–literally to go back to the beginning of the cycle and repeat the same mistakes all over again.

Except this time, they took away Superman’s red trunks and put lines on his pants and shirt. Yay.

I think that’s a really solid line-up. Sure there are some terrible choices like Scott Lobdell, but that’s going to happen with 52 books. You’ve also got some interesting artists taking over writer chores so that’s something to watch as well. I’m excited for a lot of these titles, hopefully the quirky, interesting ones will survive.

not sure what you mean…almost none of the titles are actually getting complete story reboots…afaik

I’m two minds about the reboot. On one hand, I only get like…3 books from DC anyway: Batman INC(which is on hitaus until 2012 now), Secret Six(cancelled), and Detective Comics(Synder/Jock/Franchevila team getting split up). So there’s goes that.

But I’m also interested in almost a dozen titles of the DCnU, so…you lose some, you gain some.

Sheeeit,

I was expecting a catastrophe when hearing about the new Superman costume… come on now… it looks like the same damn thing except with apparent “armor lines” and the exclusion of the red “underoos” part of the outfit…making that area of the outfit blue like the rest of it makes a bit more sense, imo. I think people get so caught up with a character’s original design, they can never even consider anything else as a change that is “acceptable”. Even slight changes will be seen in a negative light. (*The presence of “armor” does raise the logical question though… WHY would Superman need an armored costume, unless it’s built specifically as a defense against the effects of kryptonite and/or magical attacks? Even if that were the explanation, that would obviously make him completely invincible, and thus even more hilariously overpowered than he already is. *Aha! Another possible explanation you could write-in: Say the suit is designed to amplify the effects of yellow sunlight, to make sure he is always being recharged to the fullest extent of stored energy…something like that.)

On another note— Electro-version Superman from the mid(?) or late 90s… one major reason this got so much hate is because of the unbelievably gay pose he was in when it debuted… whoever that asswipe was that drew the picture had Superman standing around in the “Reycoome” pose from DBZ…remember when that big stupid-looking fruity character (from the Ginyu Force) was still standing after Vegeta shot him with some powerful attack… the smoke cleared and he was standing there with his legs together and his arms down with the hands out… yeah, THAT shit. A male character should not be drawn in that pose unless the whole point of the scene is to show the audience that “yeah, he’s gay.” Last I recall…Superman doesn’t play for that team…(*Politically Correct Disclaimer™: Nothing against you folks on “that other team”, of course…that’s just not how Superman gets down, y’know?) of course people still would’ve bitched all day long simply because it was such a drastic change from the classic outfit, but that amazingly fruity pose most likely made it look worse than it actually was, and people (guys) were naturally repulsed by the pose itself and the new look.

See, if you had a time machine, one could do a simple little experiment to prove that my theory is correct with comic fanboys hating new designs 99% of the damn time… just go back and introduce the exact same “new Electro Superman” design as an entirely new character that doesn’t even have anything to do with Superman or Metropolis… and most likely, people would generally have liked this new superhero just fine.

I just remembered the whole thing with Spiderman wayyy back in the day. In my opinion, the black symbiote “suit” looked way more badass than the original Spidey costume. Surprise surprise, the fanboys refused to accept that shit as “Spiderman”, so of course he had to go back to his old look. The good thing was that at least the symbiote remained and we eventually got the Venom character out of that.

…speaking of which, I would’ve loved to see Venom back in the roster for MvC3. …and this reminds me… I can’t recall ever seeing someone use Spiderman in their team in any of the tournaments I’ve watched on live streams…not even once. Even Viewtiful Joe has had at least some screen time, thanks mostly to PGorath.

*4 days remaining…and Ariana Grande will be legal… On the old era SRK I would’ve made a thread in celebration… it probably wouldn’t go over well these days.

I think something will pop up in the future that will give Dhalsim a fighting chance against Yun. That isn’t called a patch. But yeah, it still looks very bad. Seth vs Gief was more like use booms, jump back fierce, stand fierce, and maybe something else for 99 seconds while Gief tries to not give up right on the spot. That was almost impossible.

Sorry brother. Just felt like having a little change of pace. It’ll probably be back in my av rotation at some point.

anywho:

woah woah woah…how do I get to the SRK GD IRC lounge? I gots Colluqoy on my iphone…

Even with an in-universe excuse, you’re left with the more salient problem that people keep letting Jim Lee design stuff.

The biggest problem I have with the redesign is how purposeless and random it looks. It’s as though they took the basic design of the original costume and mashed it up with a random selection of superhero design trends from the last 20 or 30 years. Rather than achieving a distinctive and original look that compares with the classic design, they came up with something diluted and instantly forgettable.

The original costume, way back when, was designed to evoke the image of a circus strongman. That’s where the boots, the trunks, and the leotard come from. It was an image of power and strength. The cape was added to aid the appearance of movement, and (I suspect) the emblem was added to compensate for the poor quality of printing in those days. He might have looked like a blob of smeared colors at times, but as long as you could see that “S,” you knew what you were looking at.

Over time, the image of the circus strongman declined and was forgotten. By then, though, the costume design had not only defined the look of Superman, but had also set a template for traditional superhero design that lasted for decades. Its association with the character is so strong that nobody ever thinks of a circus strongman or anything else when they see it–they just see Superman.

That’s why this isn’t just an issue of “They changed it; now it sucks.” The classic costume has a significance to the genre that can’t be denied. It’s one of the most enduring visual symbols of both the superhero genre and the comics medium.

This is all academic, though. As I said on the comic discussion board, it doesn’t actually bother me that much, because there’s no way in hell that the new look is going to dislodge the previous one in the eyes of popular culture.

More likely, it would be met with a resounding “meh,” and the new character would take its place in the bloated ranks of D-list superheroes.

On new designs, though, the “new look” Batman of the late 70s lasted surprisingly long, and its design elements keep floating in and out of common usage. That’s an example of a new design that has proven surprisingly resilient.

I think there’s a valid issue of design theory here. Yes, the black costume looked more badass. That was its purpose. So what was the purpose of the design of the original costume, and why did they originally choose that over something more badass? What message does it send about the character?

Nevermind, I was referring to the iplaywinner video posted earlier

Sheeeeit,

Ol’ GM is correct, as usual. The interesting thing with Spidey during that time is how the symbiote itself indeed started to change him into something more dangerous and sinister…obviously a departure from the regular Spidey persona the fans loved.

On another note… I’m still quite tempted to play DCU:Online, but with the monthly fee…and more importantly…an online community that is most likely shrinking with each day… ehhhh it’s a tough call. I’d love to have a superhero/villain online game that was just a “regular” non-MMO experience, so we all just have to buy the game ONCE. I still don’t like the concept of repeatedly paying for one game with absolutely no option to even play it offline if you want. Nah, get outta here with that. Look at what happened with the PSN fiasco in the past month or so… certain assholes out there had to be assholes as usual, and as a result… you couldn’t play the game AT ALL, because it was designed with no option to play offline. Nah, fuck that. See, with Phantasy Star Universe… it had the monthly fee as well, but you could still play offline if you wanted to. Why remove this choice from the players? (*hint: moneymoneymoneymoney all day long.)

*Mr. Magoo… yeah, I need to make him in Modnation Racers… ooh, and perhaps the Junkyard cats from the Heathcliff cartoon. Y’know, that was always the better part of the show, imo. They were much more interesting and entertaining than anything going on with Heathcliff and his fat ass girlfriend… I think Sonya was her name. What the hell was up with that, anyway? Heathcliff was supposedly he star…yet he gets the inferior girlfriend? What’s that all about? Without question, Riff Raff’s girl Cleo was 10x hotter than Sonya. It wasn’t even close… this is like comparing Prime 1990s-era Pam Anderson (during the era where she was “Tool Time Gal” on Home Improvement) to… Camryn Manheim. The Junkyard Cats clique also had a cool transforming car.
