[SRK Guitarists and Bassists 2.0]

I don’t know what constitutes “tight grooves” to you, but what I did was just listen to a lot of groovy stuff and do my best to mimic those songs. For some reason I find that a lot easier to do on bass than guitar.

Please do. As basses come, it’s inexpensive, but it actually looks like a $1000 guitar. It’s got a really solid, heavy body (string-thru or string at the bridge, doesn’t matter), and for someone starting out on a 6-string, the neck is thinner than most 6-strings, so you don’t have to feel too overwhelmed.

It’s one of the best investments I’ve made.

What kind of cable do I need to plug my Line 6 pod 2.0 into a pc? Is there a midi to USB cable out there?

Old school Metallica songs are good for that kind of stuff, like Master of Puppets, For Whom The Bell Tolls, etc.

How long would it take to become a Great guitarist(As good as my faovirte Tom Morello)

Also what kind of guitar does he play on?

The one that says Arm the Homeless.

It sounds absolutely filthy.

The POD 2.0 has both MIDI IN and OUT and two 1/4" analog out connections. A basic MIDI->MIDI cable will work for the MIDI connections, and you can use a couple unbalanced 1/4" patch cables for the analog out. Yes, there are MIDI->USB cables out there; your local music (instrument) store should have them. If not, then you can google “midi to usb” and pick the online store of your choice (I think even Amazon sells one).

For the analog connection - if you have a conventional soundcard, like a basic Soundblaster, then you’ll need some kind of Y-adapter that accepts two 1/4" plugs and ends in a balanced 1/8" plug. I don’t think any basic sound card has separate inputs for the main left and right channels, and you’ll be using those for the connection.

I don’t the MIDI connection on my POD 2.0 unless I absolutely have to save a setting for something, and that’s rare (and usually not worth the trouble because the POD 2.0 software sucks). I just use the analog outs and connect those directly to my sound card (EMU 0404). In my setup, all of the MIDI stuff I have to do is done through a synth and MIDI drums (which are also directly connected to the card through MIDI IN/OUT) and SONAR; the POD 2.0 is just my fancy guitar direct box.

This is a question that can’t be answered, because there are so many factors involved and time is only one of them. Rest assured that if you are dedicated, practice with goals in mind, and still have most of your fingers in good working order, you will get good.

It’s a Stratocaster copy guitar that he put together himself out of spare parts. As far as I know, the only features on it that can’t be bought off the shelf are the paint job and the faulty pickup switch (which he deliberately left in the guitar after discovering the high-pitched screeching sound it made in the center position).

I think the really distinctive element of Tom Morello’s sound is that he plays almost exclusively with the neck pickup, as opposed to most rock/metal guitarists who usually use the neck pickup for soloing. It makes his rhythm playing very gritty and sludgy.

So he plays higher up on the Neck compared to most Hard Rock/Metal guys playing lower?

No, he plays with the neck pickup–the pickup that’s closest to the neck and fathest from the bridge–on exclusively, which produces a different sound from most heavy players.

I saw Tom Morello live at Rock the Bells last year.

It was perhaps the coolest and best performance I’ve ever seen.

Thanks for all the answers. I’m pretty sure my soundcard wouldn’t support any of the alternatives you mentioned. When you said you were “Saving a setting,” I wasn’t quite sure what you meant. The MIDI to USB just seems really convenient to me atm though.

I’ve had my bass for about a year and I’m finally getting into the groove of playing. I just about got Ironman down, I just need to focus on the solo’s. I think I’m gonna try enter the sandman next.

Bridge pickups typically have a very bright, cutting tone, whereas neck pickups tend to have a darker, rounder sound. Compare a dog barking to a cow mooing.

It is worth noting that part of the reason neck pickups sound darker and rounder is because strings resonate more brightly at the ends and darker towards the middle. Though it’s unorthodox, picking above the neck of the guitar instead of above the body will yield a rounder, more bell-like tone.

I just got my new Ibanez VBT-700 in ! It’s a discontinued model, It’s got a Wizard II neck and Dimarzio D-activator pickups, this thing plays so amazing ! I’ll post some pics later.

I’m new to the guitar scene and am in need of help. I recently purchased a Fender Strat and I’m trying to teach myself to play which is a struggle in its own, however I wanted to know if anyone has links to a site where I can listen to chords.

I’m currently using Maran Illustrated : Guitar and its a great book. However not knowing what the chords should sound like frustrates me because I dont know if I’m doing it right or not.

I’d also like to know if anyone else was self taught, using resources like books and the internet in order to learn the instrument.

I’m 100% self taught. I used one book and then bought tab books for Metallica and other various bands… then moved on to online tabs of other types of songs and I generally progressed.

Heres simple chord sounds:

Also check out the program Guitar Pro 5. Such a great tool in learning songs.

learning chords can be a bitch at first. To make sure it sounds right, get into the chord fingering and then pick each string separately making sure that each string sounds clean. Then it’s safe to strum them all.

I started off self-teaching, then took some lessons for a while. Now I’m pretty much self-teaching again, though I have a friend that helps me out from time to time.

Try to learn some scales as well. That will help you a lot.

Check this out.

There is also a similar feature in the very excellent program Power Tab:

As for your other question, I took lessons for three years and am self-taught from there. I might have been able to make it on my own, but I feel that lessons sped up my development drastically.

Thanks for input and advice. Upon using the links provided I finally feel a bit more confident in my playing since I have and idea of what the chords should sound like. I also started picking each string separately first in order to make sure each one sounds clean before I play the note.

I figure since It’s halfway through the year I’m going to try and rely on myself for a while longer but after reading what goodm0urning said about lessons drastically helping I figure I should do the same in the near future.

Once again I thank you and appreciate the help.

can anyone recommend me good guitar songs to learn. i got guitar pro but alot of the songs dont sound good without other instruments…recommenddations? im playing an acoustic guitar if that matters
