SRK Front Page, and the Community's Lack of Knowledge

Sorry, HAV, I have no intention of hijacking your thread. I apologize if it looked like that. My underlying point was many newbies have been brought to SRK, and it is understandable that they lack knowledge. They are still not on competitive level.

Nohoho sometimes posts SF4 tournament reports from Japan in his blog. People might want to check it out.

Rampage, I believe it to be clear to everyone that the number of players who left the communities from older games is largely superior to the number of people who started playing them. In addition to it, these communities lost experienced players, while gaining just a couple of - welcome - newbies. I use the word newbie with its basic meaning of new player, with absolutely no bad connotation.

It’s not tongue in cheek, I firmly believe that in two years the numbers are going to dwindle on down to lackluster, Capcom’s not going to bother with a SF5 / SFxT3 / MvC5 / whatever and we’ll be playing what we have for another ten years because that’s all we’ve got. Am I ‘blaming’ anyone for it? No, of course not, Capcom wants a wider consumer base (as does everyone) and they’ll do what they have to to achieve it. When fighting games stop being the ‘in thing’ though, they’ll drop it quick as shit. Are those 1500+ still going to be around when the game’s not being patched for them, or you’re not getting shadow modes to work with, or fifteen new characters at $8 a pop?

The community will naturally weed itself out. The community we have now doesn’t give a flying fuck about what HAV’s trying to push. They’re going to be spewing Fuudo-isms for months while Daigo takes a backseat to the Poongko fanboys. If the front page published on article on top players (let’s say Flash Metroid and Justin) dissecting Winners / Losers / Grand Finals it would get a smattering of people’s attention. If they published an article on Poongko suddenly stating he wants to play MvC3 because AE sucks, then you’d get a retarded amount of replies.

We are in a ‘pro era’ as Daigo coined it. The question now is what were in before hand, and what are going to be in afterwards?

It does seem like alot of people care about the pro players over how they play I understand all that but I allot of people acting like fuudo is new which is kinda funny also people saying oh he won because he had fei no he didnt fei isnt a easy win but I do understand this thread though its funny when daigo lost some people called him ass because he lost with yun an now people will be following fuudo and poongko alot more now I also wonder the word Pro gets thrown around abit to much

Hey HAV,

Are you talking knowledge of who top players are, or game/match-up knowledge?

I like what you are doing with that other thread, I will keep track on it.

I think a good thing for the Front Page would be an EVO recap, and an actual breakdown of the matches. Like a post game report. You have the Super Bowl, then post game, the analysts break it down and give their opinions on what and why things happened.

I think that would increase the knowledge of the player base, and to more understand things. I think people would like a breakdown of how Latif got broken down, and what actually was going on in the Daigo matches.

And if they could extend this to a match of the week, with some top players matches.

I would just like more breakdowns of tournament play matches.

Or maybe crosscounter tv has this kind of thing planned.

idk, just my opinion.

Outside of Tech Talk (which is incredibly helpful), the only purpose of the forums seems to be to generate what the kids are calling “Hype.”

Personally, I’d imagine the forum should be used to discuss things. It’s not for that. It’s just kids internettin’ like it’s 4chan-memetics or youtube comments.

I brought up that I think taunting is lame, and sent someone the message that they were a sore winner. This was pretty much the response:

“OH U MAD!!! LOL HE SO MAD AN SALTY!!! HE HATEMAIL LOLZ”

It’s the intellectual equivalent of a tranq-dart.

You could make a case for me being a shitty player who just doesn’t get it. Or you could discuss taunting.

Which leads me to this:
Everyone on here is so worried about being exposed as not The-Ultimate-Fucking-Warrior that they treat questions or dissent as if it was a personal attack on their mother’s honor (see above). Everyone is trying to out-tough-guy each other so much that they don’t really discuss anything at all. It’s just guys standing around the men’s room measuring dicks and flexing.

The front page is just silly.

The “journalism” side of SRK should be to act as a community advocate and disseminator of information. They do nothing of the sort. The last editorial Keits wrote was just terribly thought out. It was like reading a letter from Capcom to us about why their business practices are just fine. I understand “biting the hand that feeds”, but I grew up punk and don’t care for that attitude - it’s weak knee’d and lame.

You might say "Well, what have you done for the community you opinionated jerk?"
I don’t know how this stacks up, but I’ve been here for 3 months and copyedited King of Chinatown for free (so that the community looks more professional), gave away the idea for hybridizing button and stick controllers for free, attended a tournament I found out about on here, and accumulated a ratio of 448 posts with 150 likes. It’s not a contest, but that means 1 in 3 of my posts someone took the time to let me know that they enjoyed it. Seems like a pretty solid showing for 3 months.

The preceding post is an opinion - not a point of fact. I’m not OG here, or on staff, and have no say in anything.
It’s just an opinion, folks.

Most people don’t pay attention to the japanese players unless they are daigo, mago, tokido, momochi, or those online replys uploaded to youtube

Just anything related to the game being played at high level… Not just random hype.

Match breakdowns… critiques… something… showcasing new techniques in meaningful ways… all sorts of shit. The sky is the limit, but we’re stuck on the ground right now.

There is a very simple reason why the community has become the way it is and it’s the exactly same reason why we have stream monstering going on about salty, mad and similar asinine concepts.

Lack of strong and strict moderation.

Yeah, I think Hav is honestly on the right track time to shift the focus of the front page to what has been suggested in this thread. Currently, SRK front page reminds me more something which is in comp with Eventhubs for hits which is fine. However, I think weekly player focused articles (From players all around the world) would be the first step for SRK to REALLY showcase why it is the WORLD’s competitive edge in SF.

I’m not trying to offended the people that put so much work into the front page, just trying to give them ideas.

Great thread HaV hopefully more people post their input to really help get the front page to that next level.

I tend to agree. I think just about any form of media has gotten far more disposable now that we’re deeply entrenched in the digital/smartphone/facebook era. Gaming was as much a part of that era kicking off as it is becoming a victim of it. This rubs off on us two ways, I guess: people hop on the bandwagon without assessing what really appeals to them about our hobby AND they won’t put in a sustained effort at anything but posturing and crafting an online persona.

This attitude then gets turned on honest, sincere attempts to help like HAV suggests. If you’re getting a feeling that someone’s ego might be on the line if you’re contributing constructive criticism it just isn’t worth the resulting tears/personal attacks/hatred that results.

^^^^

This is pretty much exactly what I’m on. Having everything they have on the front page now is fine… there is just more that SRK, and only SRK can do, and I think it’s in everyone’s best interest that SRK do it.

By now I would have hoped SF4 has annotated matches of decent/high-level play like this:

Maybe 3 highlight matches a week will be a great start. I know CCTV:Asia has a segment now breaking down Xian vs Mago, but sometimes 30 minutes is too dragging.

The community went a direction I never thought it would. Back in 2000, it’s all about pick the best team and beat the shit out of someone who is just as good with the same top-tier team. Now it’s, “He’s tops so don’t use him or we’ll just boo the fuck out of you.” I’ve no idea what happened but these new guys just don’t like the competitive part of SF and want to just enjoy SF as a casual game. It’s detrimental to the competitive nature of the game but it brings SRK them big bucks. I believe it’s the rocky point between being a niche hobby and becoming a huge world-wide sensation and we’re just going to have to ride it out.

The casual “news” that gets on the front page these days likely generates more hits than serious, in depth shizz.

The problem is that Eventhubs has actually been publishing guides for the games they talk about (where they get them is a different story all together), where SRK has an entirely bare bones set of basics to run with for two games. Hell, one of them is outdated at this point, isn’t it? The front page of SRK has turned into something completely different then what the inner workings of the forums represent. The two don’t mesh together.

If you see a Skullgirls post on the front page the anime hating battalion comes out in full force to shit on it because 'LOL ITS ALL GIRLS ANIME AIRDASH LOLOLOLOLZLFJK".

If you actually check out the thread on SRK you’ll find out that Reverge Labs’ community manager, one of their interns, and god damn Mike_Z himself are a fully active part of the thread. Shit, Mike_Z just implemented a brilliant suggestion brought up by Mr. X in the thread (about having to hold start for 15 frames to actually pause) that garnered applause at their Evo panel. There’s not a flying flaming squirrel’s chance in hell that would have happened on the front page.

IMO you should do that thread, or make a blog or what have you and link it to Eventhubs / Iplaywinner. Then by association it’ll end up on the front page of SRK.

We’re trying to remedy this by doing videos at Cross Counter Asia. Check it out hav.

Ps: why weren’t you at evo

I am gonna be honest, why doesn’t SRK cover more fighting games on the front page? Like 5 news worthy posts for BBBR and not one gets on the front page. That could help it gain popularity. They even removed the annoying P-Gauge. I guess I should tip Keits for them. How about we start Tipping Keits for this stuff, cause all of this (including mine) can’t magically appear on Keits CPU screen when he boots up his computer. He seriously doesn’t know any of this becuase no one bothers to tell him this (or at least I am assuming.) not to say he shouldn’t take it upon himself to look for them him self as well. But he can’t always find everything.

Because a 4.5 million damage combo and a 1 frame link Dante infinite in MvC3 are much more importat

That’s been established. There’s just no reason there can’t be both. Not even talking 50/50 here…

This nigga Jeff an international superstar now… I haven’t checked the CCA shit yet, but I will. Thanks for the heads up.

Evo just wasn’t in the cards this year

front page gotta step it’s game up, or just give up and redirect to eventhubs
