SRK Forums *NOT* closing down at the end of January 2018

I will check it out, bro! We’re waiting to see what Tom does here after the 24 hour poll he made. There’s a chance something good could still happen here.

Either way, we’re talking now about just doing our own thing, since not many people here seem that excited about a new SRK with drastic upgrades. The fact that the majority seem to be fine with a new Vanilla board is pretty baffling and discouraging to be honest. We’ve made logo-less versions of all the images so we could very easily pick a different domain name and start something completely new.

I don’t like the idea that people have been put in the position of feeling like they need to spend their own time and money to preserve something only because the owners don’t give a fuck about them. And now it’s at the point of “maybe something might or might not happen yet,” so those people are out of pocket and mind fucked as what to do to continue the legacy they’ve kept at for almost 18 years. Honestly I’ve never looked down on the staff or admin of this site, but fucking hell, if this is how they’re going to finish things off.

Some people say money and fame changes people, and in this case that’s definitely true. I thought Event Hubs were bad, but some people here at Evolution are clearly so far up Capcom’s arse hole, the thought of ESPN has them completely consumed in greed. They don’t even want our money, if they did they’d be asking for it like they were ten years ago, because they needed the donation drives to host the tournaments.

I feel used and abused. When you need my cash you’ll take it, but when you’re ballin’ and Evo doesn’t need it anymore, not of us matter.

I honestly don’t know what to say beside list a bunch of profanities.

I think why people are looking for legacy features is because they’re hoping this database can be salvaged and that will make migration easier, in theory.

We still have a lot of work to do on the zetaboard and since you may be starting aomething more fresh, I’m going to start copying information from here to the zetaboard to try and preserve some of it (even though I know we’ll be lucky to preserve 1% of it). We can also always copy it to another site later… Or it may be all for nothing but I don’t want to take that risk.

I’m probably going to reach out to SRK members for help copying text over, and at least this will give them a home if SRK dies, at least, until we can find a better permanent solution.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or concerns about this. Thanks.

Why deprive us the opportunity to ‘bleed’ for them? If SRK was experiencing financial woes then why not invite us to the table since this affects us all? We would’ve helped without a second’ thought. But the way this was announced, the poll, everything thus far has been tactless and even tasteless. We deserved a little more consideration in this decision.

In regards, to the “very substantial dollars”, I can’t speak on that unless I have a solid breakdown of those $2k monthly costs. From everything I have gathered, it sounds more like a terrible business decision than an issue with supporting a community forum. If indeed there was a way to support these forums more cost effectively (and there is), then you can’t blame SRK for you not taking the right measures to stop the cash leaking from your pockets every month.

You can’t grow something from the ground up, get thousands of people invested… with thousands of hours and tons of information and then just update and be like “Its over in a month” Especially with the amount of TLC show to these forums and the growth of the community not just by the owners but many of the players.

Of course people are going to be mad and wonder why, and assume things.

It doesn’t make any logical sense.

The only thing that makes sense is that it’s an expense and burden that you don’t want to deal with anymore. And that’s what people are going to assume. (And thats fine as long as people know ahead of time and can prepare)

A simple front page post informing people of the situation more than a few weeks before just announcing its being shut down would have done wonders for someone else to pick up the torch. Now everyone is scrambling and no one is sure if donations are gonna happen, if things are gonna be backed up. Or what will be the new site…

smh

Honestly, as most people know I’m usually very polite but its god damn ridiculous for people to find out this way and for them to not even show face, let alone offering alternative solutions. What a joke.

OH MY GOD YOU HAVE RETURNED OH MY GOD YOU ARE MY HERO THANK YOU FOR COMING BACK CAN YOU ADD ME ON FACEBOOK PLSPLSPLSPLSPLSPLS

Look everybody is shocked to shit about the costs of maintaining character guides and shenanigans, but I have yet to see any evidence of The Cannons doing things maliciously. As a matter of fact even when it comes to Wiz you can’t say he wasn’t trying to give SRK his best ( his way of doing it at time ranged from awesome like when he helped out DaRabidDuckie to absolute dumbfuckery with his years of threats of closing GD down). Maybe vanilla isn’t the best, but that is Two-fucking-thousand-dollars-montly to keep a group of people together. Fucking hell, I don’t make 24k yearly. A person’s yearly salary was being spent on keeping up this site reportedly for multiple years. Mind you, the 2K situation is current costs, that doesn’t take into account all the other years for which SRK burned a hole (and a sizeable one) in their pockets.

This community is tight for a reason, one of those reasons is the damn money and work upper management have done regardless of how you feel about them. That damn well deserves all the fucking respect and appreciation you can muster because I wouldn’t be getting heated over if what they didn’t wasn’t anything short of great.

But this the situation where we find ourselves:

Running the forums at the moments costs a lot of money. That in itself is surprising for a couple of things: 1) we know traffic has significantly slowed down since AE2012 release and 2) it is expensive as all shit to do it with a forum software that absolutely nobody likes. We also have the situation where much of the upper management doesn’t want to deal with the forums and their community anymore (This means Cannons and Wiz, Preppy is a very active admin on a lot of front and back end issues). Lastly the front page has become its own separate brand apart from the forums; as such the name SRK now means that FG pseudo blog that has its own different set of users (and its been this way since…12-13).

Wanting to fuck off from SRK is natural. The great thing about SRK has always been its existence over these 18 years. This has meant that if you fucked off for years, it was still here years later. If you did it for a couple of months (like I did not too long ago) it was still here months later. Imagine the sole existence of it being attached to your wallet. That’s a different type of relationship altogether. The Cannons have other life things to care about. They have Stonehearth and whatever fighter they are making for Riot and family and just general lives outside of this nonsense. They don’t want to deal that’s just fine and everybody HAS to hold that part of it. You don’t get a say on what people do with their personal lives.

The big issue is that this side of kind of got left hanging. Thankfully we have Preppy who does an insane amount for the forums. But if the level of interest wasn’t there from the top, we needed a more open transition and communication. Feel as they may, just let us know “hey, we have the world going, we can’t at the moment, who do you trust so things can be handled?” or other some such. This weird backroom decision making has always been bad and lead to bad situations. Years ago the cost of running a major became a huge talking point precisely because nobody was willing to sit down and level with people. Preppy was in the middle of cleaning up a lot of the modding stuff so SRK chose to close down in the middle of the current admin trying to prevent the situation happening. This is absolutely awful for everybody. Maybe we don’t need to know every little detail, but we need to know more than what is being shared for the sake of being able to communicate.

As a community the separation of the front page and the forums puts the forum, which had been the sole reason for this place, in a precarious situation. Because the URL shoryuken no longer means community, it means blogging. I have homies who write for the front page and none of this is meant to disparage them. SRK turned into a 2 headed beast and the younger head takes more precedence. That means that in the case of the URL owner (inkblot) its easy to say that one side is working and the other isn’t. For us it means that name SRK basically dies to us for all practical reasons; the name dying means that this particular community dies with it too. I feel that part of it was a miscalculation on management side from not necessarily understanding the value users gave to being SRK members. If you spend a crazy amount of money and you’re looking at that type of analytic, the decision becomes a somewhat obvious one. It does put SRK the forum in greater uncertainty for a future.

The money…two thousand dollars. I am going to whole heatedly disagree with Flicky. Dude has a 7 month account so I don’t think he sees the greater picture. Its absolutely silly that people were getting burned for that much over the years. Had communication been better between users and management, we probably would’ve arrived at a cheaper solution, one that would let us fundraise to keep the forums alive and have the silly Quality of Life things people enjoy (animated avatars and galaga ships). The eSporty stuff has taken over what actually matters: the community. This place isn’t about a trophy, its about a group of people who care about these games and getting good at them. These people that interact on a daily basis solely on talking shit and wanting to be better than others. Maybe SRK isn’t the whole of the FGC (fucking shitty as term I’ve always hated) but it is very much the heart of it whether outsiders like it or not. If we want to stick together, there’s no better way to show it than to unload that financial burden that the Cannons placed on themselves. A community together requires a community effort to keep it that way.

But we desperately need leadership people who are going to care about the state of the forums and are going to do things to promote it. We need to engage ourselves and give this place some new life (which there are a lot of ways to do). We just need to stop saying SRK sucks and remember why this place kicks ass. There’s too many people who haven’t been here for years saying this place sucks; what’s even worse is people who don’t contribute complaining about people who don’t contribute. This place can be fixed but it needs the community in it to be mentally back.

The value is that the forums are a loss leader. It builds a community of people which generates eyeballs and interest in whatever higher value projects they do focus on. Without forums I don’t think the front page is going to get anywhere near the same amount of traffic, which means they are just shooting themselves in the foot. The issue is that a simple forum which gets only a modest amount of traffic should not cost two grand a month. That makes zero sense. Let’s see the cost breakdown to see why they need to pay so much money because I don’t buy it for a second.

I get that they don’t want to deal with the forums and that makes total sense. But simple delegation is what they teach in management 101. They could have tapped anyone on the shoulder, especially you with your years of tech experience, “hey SRK forums is too expensive, can you come up with a solution in 6 months”. Then by simply asking the community, many of which also have tech experience, people could have and would have come together to come up with something (as they are right now). Hell I bet many of them would have worked for free, because srk is that important to them. Then once the monthly costs are reduced, do something such as premium subs with various tiers, patreon or whatever, and boom they are no longer in the red

@Pertho Just to be clear, when I said “SRK deserves the best and that’s what we’re attempting to create”, it was in response to people asking me about whether or not I’ve communicated/collaborated with the other guys that are making SRK successor sites. It wasn’t at all to take away from anything the SRK staff has done in the past… I was saying that me and the dudes working with me have put a crazy amount of time and money into quality software and hosting and making top tier designs. Whereas the other people are currently using Vanilla free and shared hosting and whatnot (no disrespect to you guys, just trying to explain). So that’s what I was referring to when I said we’re trying to create to best for SRK.

I’ve never doubted Inkblot, Wiz or any SRK staff for having the best intentions for SRK in the past. Vanilla and its hosting was a bad decision, yeah, but I’ve never thought their intentions weren’t good. I’ve even noted in this thread that I can understand why they want to be free of dealing with the forums.

I know somebody took shit to IRC to say you were dissing the Cannons, so I think we just might wanna be a little bit more careful. Emotions are running incredibly high for good reason because we care.

Caring is okay. Caring made the SRK, Evo and the scene as a whole. Final Round ran as a loss for years because of caring. Caring is great.

Well some fucking idiot needs to actually read my posts and not get them mixed up with other people’s, or work on their comprehension skills. I’d like for that moron to come into this thread and attempt to tell me how I’ve dissed the Cannons. Please do. I’m actually a little itchy to roast someone’s ass, old school SRK style.

PFFT, like I said, emotions are running hella high.

Plus I take offense to that, if people could read SRK wouldn’t be as fun. Illiteracy is a hallmark of SRK and should be a part of any other forum we move to.

As should flaming. The two go hand and hand.

I’ve been putting my heart and soul and wallet into saving SRK this week and in the process making it pretty fucking awesome. All that hard work is ready to launch and I’m holding off out of RESPECT for the Cannon’s. Meanwhile some asswipe is going on IRC saying I’m dissing them? That actually pisses me off. Yeah, emotions are running high. I’m underslept and overworked. I have a full-time job and a pregnant wife and I’ve been busting my ass on this shit all while trying to help my mother move. It’s a bad time for some little SRK twat to be getting shit twisted.

This shit ain’t fuckin’ worth it, dude. I need a break. I’m out.

For the record I have nothing but the utmost respect for Wiz, Ink, Preppy, and the Cannons. But please don’t fault me or anyone here for a sense of betrayal. It hurts to spend half your life with people only for it to possibly be over overnight without validation.

This is not just another forum. We can’t replace what we have with social media. Once this is gone, it’s gone. Please think hard about ot before you decide. There is another way. There has to be.

This whole debacle has been nothing but depressing and disappointing. :frowning:

Wait, do you mean out of this thread or out of the idea of shoryuken.net? I seriously hope it’s not the latter… don’t let one twat ruin this.

I dunno, but there’s a few things that definitely need to happen. One, the forum needs stripped back, get rid of defunct forums, you don’t need multiple character forums for every game with multiple threads, when you can have a single character thread. Two, the forum software needs changing to something that’s cheaper and strategies need to be implemented to store data without it impacting on the main forum, such as the wiki for example.

I’m no expert, but I find it hard to believe that it costs $2000 a month to host this website. Ten plus years ago when Evo was just growing they didn’t have anywhere near as much money or financial backing as the do now. I remember the first time Vegas was announced to be the permanent home of Evolution World (as it was known back then, there was also Evo East and Evo West), that was massive because the hotel venues were big and that its self cost a lot of money, yet SRK was buzzing. Back then they relied on premium membership and donations to help support SRK and Evo, people even used to donate just so Japanese players could travel across to America because there were no sponsors and eastern attendances were low, people wanted Daigo hype.

So think about it, if it has been costing $2000 a month, with the knowledge that they can make money from premium memberships and donations for all this time, especially with things now like Patreon, sorry to put it bluntly, but which idiot has been forking out $2000 a month to run a forum when they could be spending maybe $500-$1000 of their own money instead?

That doesn’t make one bit of sense, for a group of people who are in the business industry, to knowingly lose money, on purpose. Which I guess is what brings us to this position today. So how long has this been going on for? Since 2010? Who chose a ridiculously expensive server to migrate SRK to? Who decided not to offer premium when they know from past experiences it saves them money?

Basically nobody gave a fuck, it’s just one bad decision after the other. What’s the bets someone just bought them selves a new PC and can’t afford to pay for February’s bill.

Got some feedback from vanilla, should definitely be able to get a database copy and the archive will include it. If we go to opensource some features like reactions will be lost without developer intervention, but essentially it’s almost a drag and drop replace. They said shouldn’t take more than 5-10 min to configure it.

Theme selection and our current themes would be lost probably without developer intervention.

Migration should be possible. Got this info from a mod but he said he’d have a support staffer look and give me a better response.
