Spy Headquarters : C. Viper General Discussion

Ok, thx

I was wondering how you guys approach or the mentality you take when facing different level of opponents from top players down to the xbox live random, do you just play as usual no matter the opponent? or do you tend to play a certain way for each type of player? The reason I’m asking this is because for some reason I do way worse against low level players than I do against high level players which is very annoying. Against low level players I tend to play a very safe, basic, and overly defensive to try and avoid as much bs as possible, this means I only do true block strings, mostly rely on throws to set things up, anti-dp setups all day, and generally just block and punish everything as hard as possible. In my mind that seems like a decent way to deal with a random but as soon as they hit me or knock me down a whole bunch of bs starts going down as I try to fathom their way of thinking which results in my mind going blank and next thing I know I’m dead, it’s like I’m not even playing street fighter I’m playing survive the onslaught of randomness. I used to just rush them down as hard as possible but that resulted in me eating reversals and random ultras so I ultimately decided to just turtle it out but either way I’m dealing with some bs.
As for a decent player I still play pretty defensive the first round and try to check their level of randomness and their tendencies before deciding on how to approach them, here is when I actually start using my mix-ups, frame traps and so forth but I still play it relatively safe depending on how paranoid I am of my opponent doing something random.
Then theirs the top player which I don’t have much of a problem with since that’s when the mind games come in which I find very enjoyable. The only problem I have against a top player is that I sometimes get caught up in the mind games and trying to read my opponent that I get ahead of myself trying predicting what their gonna do and before I realize I’m playing a reactive play style forgetting to mount my own offense, this results in my opponent having an easier way to get in on me since they have many other options besides the one thing I’m looking out for which usually results in me getting killed.

Anyway I just feel like I’m not in the right mindset when playing Viper anymore and I would like to hear about your ways of thinking so I can figure out what it is I’m doing wrong or what has changed in my Viper now since I was really good before or at least above average and now I just suck, I was able to to have 4000+ PP in super and ultimately got to 5000 i think but now I can’t even reach 3000? that really pisses me off.

I’m the same as you, I’ll play good solid smart players who have more pp than me and do well then I’ll play random ass Ken and manage to lose somehow because I have all these things in my head and he of course being an idiot will do the exact opposite of what is smart and then I’ll get hit by it :S

Against the scrubby players who like to random it out:
-At the beginning of the round wait, they’ll either throw out a random special move or jump. Just wait and punish accordingly.
-Once you hit them with a medium/light thunder knuckle back dash and see what they do. Most will jump or mash jab but, they’ll do it pretty much every time and respond with the appropriate counter until you get them to mash a reversal. The same goes for an air to air situation and you both land in front of each other (sorry for the bad description)
-Overhead throw works wonders as well as any kind of tick throw situation.
-On wake-up if you expect them to mash a reversal, but you don’t want to let up on the pressure, learn what burn kicks you can use to beat those reversals. Also to bait out 3 frame reversals you can do an early safe jump into crouch tech which should prevent that awkward turtle moment if the block and still keep safe if they mash. If they mash jab on wake-up just overhead then throw or counter poke cr. fierce into whatever. If they have a full stick of butter just give them space and punish whatever stupid mistake they make next.
-Once you stuff a few reversals and they stop pressing buttons, they become the training mode dummy on random block
-Trying to play footsies is usually how you will get jumped in on most of the times. Most likely the only footsies they will have is sweep and jump which is pretty much non at all so counter poke sweep with low forward into thunder knuckle and AA any jump-ins.
-Usually once you block an unsafe special move i.e. spiral arrow/lp srk they’ll throw an even more unsafe special move i.e. cannon spike/hp srk which online it can be a little difficult to punish moves like spiral arrow/lp srk so pay attention to habits like that especially when they have ultra.
-Don’t be afraid to jump all over them especially if they show they don’t have the reactions to anti-air let alone block high.
-If they do get in your face don’t crouch tech unless they start throwing you. Crouch teching is usually how you get in a situation where they’re jumping all over you and you can’t seem to get out. Pretty much you just want to block and as soon as they jump anti-air them.
-If they jump in on your wake up just hp tk except if they go for a cross up.
-If they sit there and do nothing on your wake-up throw them.
-If they focus throw them that way if they back dash you’re still safe or if you have meter ex burn kick.
-Usually they will find a special move they like and spam it i.e. tatsu/spiral arrow just figure out how to shut it down.

In Summary:
-Pick up on habits because no matter how random they seem they will do the same thing in the same situation almost guaranteed.
-Never ever never let them get away with something stupid, even if you only punish a hp srk with cr. forward xx medium tk don’t let him get away for free.
-You can beat him with fundamentals you don’t have to be fancy.
-Remember that you are the better player so don’t be afraid of his scrubbery
-Stay cool, the primary way good players lose to absolute scrubs is they get flustered when they eat a few scrubby reversals and random specials and all of a sudden their inches away from death against someone who has no footsies no reactions and their best combo is cr. jabx4. Don’t let yourself get upset because the moment you do is when you lose, and even if you lose the first round you should have him downloaded so winning another round would be near impossible.
-Let him go nuts and punch him in the dick for being stupid.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much you pointed out quit a bit of things I was doing wrong that I can’t believe I didn’t realize myself, thank you again your info is most useful

So I decided to pop SSF4 for a bit after a long hiatus (mainly to maintain my viper execution) went through the whole execution gauntlet rapid seismo feints with full super bar to keep my dp motions crispy, meterless FADC, SJC ultra, rapid tk feints, blah blah blah. Started to feel myself a little and went online to play some casuals, and fought a Honda player, and learned something very important. Capcom continues to fuck up no matter how much to try to fix their shit, even in 2012, AA TK U1 still drops honda prematurely…fuck this game, and fuck Capcom! Thanks for that U1 hitbox buff!

I just learned how to SJC into Burning Dance, which I’m pretty excited about. But… I can’t get the seism SJC into Burnign Dance. Wish I had Latif/Wolfkrone finger muscle memory. I can learn everything through my brain… lol

Krone and Latif have practically the same muscle memory as the rest of us, they’ve just practiced 100x more than most of us :stuck_out_tongue:

I must practice more then! lol I’m stuck on getting Trial 15 down right now. Looks like it’s gonna take me a while… maybe a dedicated day or so.

Here is a way to learn how SJC into burn kick, you are probably inputting the SJC first then :qcb: x2 :3k: instead try and combine them into one motion, so after seismo hammer input :qcb::ub::qcb::3k: it will cancel the seismo, super jump cancel and the ultra will come out easier.

if you seem not to get it as first, rest for a day or two then come back to it, withing that time your brain will process that data to sync with your finger motions (honestly I dont know how but that is how I learned the Fierce feint Fierce lol!)

goodluck bro

Thanks! I was playing around with Ibuki today, but switched over to Viper and got my butt handed to me online for the last 30 minutes. Seems like I can’t do anything that I learned through challenge or training when I’m facing an actual opponent. I hate this…

lol! yeah, happened to me as well when I was learning Gen the first time, the reason that happens is that your brain to hand cordination has not yet synched properly, you realize that either your hands are not responding to what your brain is thinking or that your brain is searching for the response therefore causing you to freeze in a fight, this is what I did, go to training mode, practice the simple combos first then go to arcade mode at the hardest setting and try landing it on the computer opponent, its similar to playing online and you dont lose points.

remember, it is not what you know that is important it is what you have trained your fingers to to do that is important

Guess that’s what the plan is for tonight after class. I hate that I freeze up, especially when I know in my head how to counter certain things or punish stuff from happening. I feel that my fingers are naturally synced for Ibuki, but I want to play with her and C. Viper. I have to give a lot of my time to Viper first though because Kensou told me it’s gonna talk some strong dedication. Wolfkrone also told me I need to master all the combos in the trial before I try anything else too. Thanks for the advice, Ugo! Wait, how good of a Gen player are you? Are you on Xbox Live?

Hahaaa, I am below average, here is a few of my matches

so you decide how good I am lol! nah I dont play on XBOX, I am a PC player. I dont really play that well I just spend time in training mode trying to figure out easier ways to perform attack and then make tutorials about them. Currently I am working on Viper as well.

THE DOUBLE KO… lol You’re pretty good. I would like to see some Viper tutorials all over though. It’s so hard to find some good ones. They don’t even have an option select for her or any video guides.

Sorry for the double post, but I just got this combo down! [ex seismo, sjc flame kick, ultra] And I got past every trial, but 15. I still need to work on that one and up, but I’m a little excited I got this corner ultra combo down!

Thanks, I am currently learning from Nu, he is a very good gen player and he has been kind enough to train me. As for the trials here is the videos, you can watch and see how it is done

also you can visit my blog for viper tutorials, there are not many there but its a good place to start

if you need any other thing let me know

Jeez… I really hate losing so much with C. Viper. I also hate that it’s like… some standard thing to lose a lot with viper before you become awesome with her. I dislike indecisive people, but it seems I’ve become one of them in not being able to decide on character to master first… Ugh… I can SJC Viper, but can’t do it with Ibuki. Lame…

patience and practice amigo, you will start winning and you wouldnt even know it

Yeah, I spent some time practicing this weekend. I think I’m going to hold off on trying to learn Viper until I can master Ibuki or so. I’ve been looking into charge characters like Chun-Li and DeeJay, but apparently people see DeeJay as a troll character and Chun-Li isn’t the charge character to begin with. Eh… I think a decent character would teach me patient and defense so I want to play with one. I’ve heard Blanka players are hated when they become really good. lol
