Spy Headquarters : C. Viper General Discussion

Ive been working on some neat little strategies tonight. Since you can sjc out of normals ive been working on meterless fadc out of hit or blocked hard punches into grab. It looks almost like you are using viper to play as Abel lol. Of course it isnt totally safe so people just mashing shoryu will beat you out but eh, its still a nice little pressure trick. Of course using it to backdash out would be good too. But then I suppose you could just superjump backwards out of it if you just want to get away, but this would probably keep you in thunder knuckle range.

I’m new to fighting games in general (Aside from smash) and I’m a C. Viper user. I’m having trouble with HJC BK. My BK always seems to come off to slow, any tips?

Speaking of that, I saw that Sako Viper dude bait a Tiger Uppercut by doing close st.mp, cr.mp SJC into FA then dashback, pretty sick.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Drexxin, check this thread: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=182223

So I was in losers semis at this tourney yesterday and in game 1 in round 2 my STICK FUCKS UP. the MP quick disconnect was out. I at least needed it for EXseismos ( I press HP and MP), ultras, and the overhead. FML.

So…out of curiosity. For just starting fighting games, I don’t suppose C. Viper is good to start with even if I want to main with her? It’s just my performance has been extremely frustrating online… I’m not used to losing so many times straight since starting ICcup on Starcraft when I was a nub =P.

I understand practice makes perfect, but should I start as someone else so I enjoy myself more, or should I just keep playing?

If your just now getting into the game then I wouldn’t really recommend Viper as a main just quite yet. To get a feel for the game maybe start off with a Shoto character like Ryu. Just play with him until your execution get’s decent then maybe make the switch to her.

Btw, do you use a controller or arcade stick because that plays an important role with her too. You can still use her with a controller, but it would be 10 x easier with an arcade stick.

I use the 360 dpad, which makes me so discouraged because it’s the worst D-pad I’ve ever used in my 15 years of gaming (Yes, worse than Genesis). If I had an arcade stick I’d probably enjoy myself a lot more. lol

Lol, yea man I’ve been down that road too. I got myself a Hori EX2, it’s a pretty good and cheap alternative if you don’t have enough cash for a SE or TE Arcade Stick. I honestly just picked up Viper a few days ago, but just from attempting to do her trials I can tell you she is pretty much about execution.

Like I said earlier though, you may want to start off simple and play with a shoto character, especially since your using a 360 D-Pad atm.

Yeah, sounds like a good idea. I noticed Outta the 15 matches I did so far today, 5 were ryu and 7 Sagat, lol.

I’ll just play an easier character and take it easy until I can get an arcade stick.

Glad I could help man.

Yeah thanks, dude. I just know that frustration won’t get me any better since I can’t analyze my mistakes each game if I’m pissed off; I know this too well from SC, but I’ll probably save up for an arcade stick at the time, that or steal one from a friend of mine. lol

Lol, yea. This game has it’s moments where I’m just like screw it, especially with Viper’s 2nd Hard Trial. Omg, it is definitely the hardest thing ever, even with advice from better Viper players I can’t seem to get it. Oh well, I’m sure if I dedicate myself to completing it then it will happen!

Till’ then, good luck buddy!

This comment from Eventhubs made me laugh a bit.

*"well I have played Viper online against people for over 30 hours now… and she is not that great imo… well at least for me. She is bad is so many different aspects:

  • Her regular move have little priority except that c.MK
  • Her combos are horribly hard to pull
  • that cancel d.u move is not that easy and the timing is really small.
  • Her Ultra is almost useless and very hard to pull by itself.
  • Her qcb.PPP is absolutely useless. It is slow, cannot combo, and have a very long recovery.
  • Her challenge trials are so hard… which give you a good idea how poor she will perform online with lag. I finished them but man they are hard compared to other trials.
  • Her alternative costume is not that great either.

I wish Capcom will put a patch for her, to make her a better character. For example, give her qcb.PPP the speed of a blanka roll and the ability to pass fireballs. Knowing the record of Capcom to put patches to balance a bit better their game, I say this is quite a dream and it will never happen… so I am going to play a little more CViper and in about 1 hour I am switching to Sagat."*

Ahahahahahah at the bolded parts. How can you determine whether a character’s good or not when you’ve only played them for such a short amount of time? Sympathise with him on her trial difficulty though.

Her trials are easy. Dunno what he’s on.

Yeah I wish her EX dash punch was a ton better so she could be Balrog number 2.

^
Lol, I’d kill for Ex TK to be like that. Speed of Blanka’s roll plus crumple plus armor break? Hell yeah! But to be fair, if you aren’t used to doing technical stuff like that in fighting games, her hard trials are difficult. Then you get your execution up and they become standard, haha. However her normals trials are easy, like everyone elses.

Speaking of EX TK, did you guys see the Game Unicorn stream where the commentators were analyzing why FlashMetroid was using them?

I figured he just missed a TK feint  or was there really a purpose?

I was too busy talking to people during the stream so I wasn’t even really paying attention to him going for EX TK’s. I know the Japanese use it on purpose during block strings once in a while to try and catch focuses, jumps or backdashes from a distance. I love using it to go under Akuma’s air fireballs. I won a clutch match against an Akuma player in the Summer Jam tournament by just passing under his EX air fireballs FTW. Too bad I press too many buttons otherwise I would have had a chance to be on the video.

Game Unicron was good stuff! Flash Metroid (who wants to be called “Flash” now) has a pretty solid Viper. He does the cancels so fast that honestly I couldn’t tell if it was on purpose or not.

what i feel is keeping me back from getting better with viper…is my inability to do instant burn kicks online. I can do them in training like no problem…sometimes after a hour of training i’ll temporaily lose it but gaining it back quickly

I dont know why…i end up jumping all of the screen with Roundhouse knee. The fact that i cant instant kick makes me want to keep doing it, in hopes i can figure it out.

sigh i only…ONLY…get pissed off when i know my execution is bad…when i know i lost because i cant get my stuff working…and when playing viper i get pissed moreso than any other character

Don’t stress too much. Viper isn’t a very good online character. She’s only good for taking to offline tournaments or playing offline since online you’ll have to pretty much play a scrubby version of her unless the connection is freaking perfect. I can do SJC FADC like 75 percent of the time or more offline (it won me some matches at summer jam this weekend) but online it’s hit or miss. Even if I do get it it’s hit or miss whether I’ll connect my Ultra afterwards due to the delay. Stuff like close s.MP, c.MP Ultra is pretty much nothing more than a prayer. Trying to do the link before the ultra is hard enough in itself unless the connection is amazing.

So basically don’t fret too much since Viper is just too timing sensitive to really take her to her full potential online. The more you play the more you’ll get accustomed to the lag and start to get things out despite the lag but don’t expect a whole lot out of your Viper through online play unless the connections are pristine. I had to leave after about 10 or so games with one of my old Xbox Live buddies cuz it felt like I was playing underwater. I was just mashing buttons and hoping what I was trying to do was gonna come out.
