Guys, please try to come to the tourney in Simsbury tomorrow. Attendees are lacking and if it doesn’t look good for the future then I can’t guarantee how many more there will be.

Racial melancholia is a form of melancholia in which the racialized other (in this case the Filipino Douglas) loses the connection to their culture due to the attempts to assimilate into the majority culture. Because society does not deem the loss of their culture important, the racialized other internalizes this loss and it forms into melancholia. The extension to this is that though the racialized other is told by the majority culture that they must assimilate, the majority culture will never actually view the racialized other as a member of the majority because they will never be able to rid themselves of the outwardly visible markers associated with their race (i.e. skin color, facial features).
Doug does not eat the cat because it is not deemed good practice in our American society. But, Doug yearns to eat the cat not just because of his hatred for it, but because it is in his culture. Doug is therefore in a perpetual conundrum on which culture to associate with, never being apart of either fully.
