Spider-Man, The Amazing Thread

Haven’t read Soul of the Hunter. I heard mixed things about it, largely that it doesn’t live up to Kraven’s Last Hunt. I’ll check it out though. He’s a good writer so it will probably be entertaining, thanks.

EDIT: It’s like 2.99 at Amazon.com heh!

I need to pick up Soul of the Hunter as well. My comic shop has a copy but I haven’t been there in months because I’m too poor to afford comics (Frickin’ recession).

Funny, but X-Men Spider-Man #2 that came out this week also takes place right after Kraven’s Last Hunt! On the X-Men end it takes place after the Mutant Massacre storyline. Black suit Spidey! Wolverine and Sabretooth go at it! Ah memories.

For all you Spidey fans, here’s a very very deep look in the Clone related Spidey stories from the 90s-
http://lifeofreillyarchives.blogspot.com/

Looks like a fun read. I haven’t read any of the stories mentioned in there yet, but I enjoyed it.

Yeah seen that site before. Clone saga is next to impossible to read in its entirety now because it jumped through like every Spider-Man book at the time and that went on for years. According to Marvel it’s the storyline that most people demand they make a TPB out of or an Omnibus of sorts. But it’s a sore spot since the Clone Saga is blamed for the downfall of Spidey in the 90s and part of Marvel going bankrupt, so I doubt they’ll do something like that.

Probably even more akward to bring out now since Spidey and MJ’s wedding has been removed and MJ’s pregnancy has ‘possibly’ been removed depending on how you interpret OMD. JQ once said that MJ’s pregnancy never happened now, but last time he was asked he turned the question of Brevoort who said something like “We will deal with the pregnancy as much as we have in the last 10 years!” Blarg…

Not the biggest Clone Saga fan, but it would be nice to read it instead of just coming across “Part 3 of 5” whenever I get up to that part in the ASM Collection on the DVD-Rom. At the very least that saga is important to Spider-Girl so there’s some importance in checking the entire thing out if you’re a Spider-Girl fan.

Oh hey Rabidrage - In this week’s Spider-Girl there’s a back up gag with Spider-Man’s son, Benjy. There’s a pretty cool Superman nod in there that you might like. It’s the M2 universe, but nice!

Oh snap Mary Jane hanging with Millie The Model! Stan Lee used to diss Millie The Model all of the time in the old ASM letter pages.

Evan Rachel Wood will play Mary Jane in the Spider-Man Broadway musical. Tidbits on the story too, it will involve an Arachne Spider person who was cursed by the gods, maybe she makes them all sing and dance or something… JJJ and Norman Osborn will be in it too. I live in NY so I suppose I’m obligated to go see this as a Spidey fan… Better not suck… :wasted:

My copy of Soul of the Hunter came in and I enjoyed it a lot.

I can see why some people might have had issues with it because the bottom lines are suicide is bad thing and there’s heavy religous themes. Still, DeMatteis writes so wonderfully that at no point did the book feel like it was preaching to me or trying to impose someone else’s belief system where a weaker writer would fall into that trap easily. Also it is an important read IMHO along with Kraven’s Last Hunt because it shows that Kraven really messed up Spider-Man’s mind for a while. Something you rarely get to see with the character because another writer usually comes along after a tragedy of this magnitude and has Spidey start telling jokes soon after like nothing ever happened.

DeMatteis as always writes a great Mary Jane who is there to support Peter through this tough time. There’s a character study on Peter as the book delves into why he became Spider-Man and the deaths of Gwen and Captain Stacy family that he blames himself for. Not the first time that has happened but it was done really well this time around.

Mike Zeck’s pencils are excellent too. Beautifully drawn and there are parts that are a bit haunting and creepy. Something about the way Spidey and Peter Parker was drawn in the 90s that I miss. That’s not a slam on current Spider-Man artists or anything like that but 90s Spidey is what I grew up on really since I started reading in the mid 80s, that style takes me back some.

I really liked this book. I’m not sure what some of the hate I heard was about. I suppose it may have been an editorially mandated story to show that suicide is bad or that Kraven is not burning in hell eternally for killing himself but at no point does it feel like it is that type of story. Many of the religous themes you can chalk up to it all being in Peter’s mind if you want to so because it is written ambiguosly. It’s not as great as Kraven’s Last Hunt but it isn’t trying to be, it’s more of an epilogue to that story and there it works really well.

Thanks again for pointing that book out Zephyranthes BTW.

Ultimate Spider-man #129 preview

That’s cool, that you got Soul of the Hunter, Sano. If I find it for cheap again, I might pick it up. I was just worried because in just about all of DeMatteis’ lesser works, he has a tendency to waffle and regurgitate his typical “life is beautiful” themes in a way that just isn’t as interesting as his good stuff.

When I was a kid, my favorite Spider-Man stuff in the '90s was DeMatteis/Sal Buscema on Spectacular. I keep searching for a complete run of their issues on eBay, but it’s been tough.

About JMS’ other version of One More Day…

Sorry if this should be in the Spidey or Marvel thread, but did his proposed/desired version of OMD involve Mary Jane being shot instead of Aunt May?
I’ve been thinking about this for a few weeks recently, and I find that Spidey making a deal with the devil to save MJ sounds more plausible somewhat.

omd still in place?

ok

see you guys in another 6 months.

my spiderman omd boycott continues.

6 months? That’s like 18 issues, even after that OMD is still in effect :V

i have quit the 616 spider-man til the fat man reverses this.

In short, what JMS wanted to do is change an aspect of Spider-Man’s past to undo the marriage. Which got nixed because it would of retconned the BND books that were already finished at the time. So Aunt May still got shot even in his version, never MJ. And after the retcon Spider-Man and Mary Jane never got married in his version also. JQ felt that the JQ retcon - Spider-Man and MJ were not married all of that time, just living together - was better than JMS’ which would of made no issue you read in 20 years have happened at all. Under JQ, the stories happened but differently.

I don’t recall specifically what change JMS wanted to make (I don’t think he said exactly either) but it went way back, far enough to retcon Gwen having kids with Norman. It was something to cause Spider-Man and Mary Jane not getting married ever and that’s how Mephisto would of undone the past.

It’s still a bad move on Marvel’s part either way IMHO.

Ah I see, but would you agree that if MJ got shot instead of Aunt May, Spidey making the deal with Mephisto would’ve been better received by fans?

It still involves Spider-Man making a deal with Mephisto and a retcon so probably not.

The next 13 episodes of the Spectacular Spider-Man season 2 described. Can’t wait!

Heh, kind of funny that Norman Osborn is causing trouble in the Marvel Universe and the M2 universe (Spider-Girl) from beyond the grave at the same time. He’s EVERYWHERE!

Oh yeah the last issue of Spider-Man Family that came out last week has a reprint of Harry Osborn’s death way back in Spectacular Spider-Man by DeMatteis and Sal Buscema in case anyone missed that issue before.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

omg the girl troubles are better than 3 seasons of dawsons creek and one tree hill…holy shit.
