Spider-Man, The Amazing Thread

so was quesada’s argument about why he didn’t want to divorce/widow peter

Kids still read Faust in schools. I don’t think One More Day is going to make children cry. (It might make fanboys cry, though.) But if you think about it, it’s pretty obvious that Marvel Comics and Mephisto is a fantasy. It’s not realistic. Most kids who read One More Day will understand that, and if they don’t, chances are their parents hopefully will be able to explain that to them.

If Peter and MJ got divorced, that could traumatize a child for life. I mean, take my generation, for instance: our defining moment was 1986, also known as The Year of the Death of Optimus Prime. What kid, when he saw Optimus flatline, didn’t cry like hell? I mean, good lord, Optimus’ head twitched to the side when his spark became one with the Matrix! That single moment fucked up an entire generation of children for years. That’s not something you can just “get over” when you are a kid. You can’t ask mommy and daddy to explain it, either, because (to quote Fresh Prince) “parents just don’t understand.” It would be a similar situation if Peter and MJ got the divorce.

The only possible flaw I might be able to see in my own analogy is that kids today don’t read comics because they’re too busy playing Pokemon and fucking Yu-gi-oh. It would have been cool if Marvel did something to reach out to the under-21 audience. In a couple more decades, when all of us die, I don’t know who is gonna read Western superhero comics.

I can see the logic behind Quesada’s choice, though. It’s true that keeping Peter single and young is a good marketing tactic for the character’s long-term prognosis. Marvel’s building for the future - the far future. These big-time, classic superheroes are iconic, and they should keep them iconic and timeless.

And if it bothers you that much, go read Spider-Girl, starring Mayday Parker. You know, Peter and MJ’s daughter? Because they stayed married?

And don’t be giving me none of that, “but it’s not in 616 continuity” bullcrap, either. If the marriage is truly what you want, go read that comic. If you keep bitching, you’re just a continuity pornographer.

Either that, or you’ve never truly overcome the death of Optimus Prime. On my darkest days, I’m not sure if I ever have.

well nobody is tryin to be a continuity whore but OMD’s endin was a total copout. When you have an EIC literally say that “magic” doesn’t need to be explained for the dissolution of a marriage then you know he fucked up. Bottom line they could have went another route without making Peter such a Grandma’s boy.

If Pete’s marriage bothers him that much, why not just start a line of Spidey books where he isn’t married, and that way, all the non-marriage stuff can go there?

Oh, yeah.

not really even if it is thousands or such it is still not a great move or is it? Maybe it was a marketing ploy to get people talking about it. I have a feeling that they’ll get married again anyway.

Come on man are you serious? This is 2008 and many divorces has become commonplace in here in the United States, Canada, and a number of members of the European Union. I think that your average parent will explain.

And again they mind as well bring back uncle ben too since “magic doesnt need to be explained”.

“It’s magic,” that doesn’t need explained could open up the floodgates for a ton of plot holes. I guess I’ll see when the new ASM books hit. Anyone else gonna be buying them?

The comedic thing is that JQ in the past has said he doesn’t like the use of magic because it doesn’t have any rules. Which is why Mystic Arcana came about, to establish rules in the Marvel magic world. I heard this come right out of his mouth at the NY Comic con in '07. So at this point I don’t know who to believe. JMS comes off as being a tad more believable though, it’s not the first time JQ has said one thing and done the exact opposite. I imagine sometimes as EIC he has to so he can keep things under wraps, but still. He may of said what he said about Mystic Arcana to, well, sell Mystic Arcana. I guess at the end of the day, that’s his job. It’s still pretty funny though.

The fourth part of the JQ OMD interview is up, I’ll toss up a link when I get a chance…

JQ OMD Interview part IV -

joe is an egotistical crackhead and doesn’t even remotely realize wut he’s done. He believes spiderman is cooler as a bachelor and because of his family values he’s forces on us…through the character instead of a divorce…OH HE HAS THE DEVIL SEPERATE THEM!..genius. That fat bastard can get it in the gut.

Can you at least pretend to be constructive?

Ed Brubaker had a nice response to the whole “he lied” thing on Newsarama in his *Captain America is Still Dead *article.

Possible other genres

[details=Spoiler]**Just asking, because I keep seeing this – how should a company publicize their books, then? Should Marvel have, when pummeled with questions from press and fans, said, “oh yeah, it’s just temporary, Peter Parker’s going to get his Secret ID back in a year or so.”

Or taking it out of comics, should JK Rowling have told all the press and fans that asked about it that Snape was really a good guy?

Should the writers of Battlestar Galactica told you that Starbuck was not really dead and would return in the season finale?

That would have made watching the emotional turmoil around her death so much less interesting, wouldn’t it?

Fiction readers really need to stop requiring answers to story plot points immediately, instead of letting them play out at their own speed.

No creators or editors are going to answer questions that reveal upcoming story beats or important twists that are coming down the line. Not in any media. And they shouldn’t. So instead they either lie, boldfaced lies, or they spin the question or they avoid the question. Those are your only choices. I wanted to know if Dumbledore was really dead after reading book 6 of Harry Potter, but I knew enough that I couldn’t trust any answer JK Rowling gave on the topic, because she wasn’t going to spoil her own story.

And good for her.**[/details]

lol i could…but its more fun to hate. and point out major flaws. people do it to me all the time lol.

Yeah, that’s because you say things like, “I got a TPB where Deathstroke owns the whole JLA” and “Dammit Zephy, I’mma find that TPB and make you STFU.” Only it never happens!!!:arazz:

uhhh…ya ok. no i didn’t. i said i’d try and find it…and told people to assume i was wrong til i found it. and someone else in gd had the tradeback and said it didn’t happen. i never said anything like stfu, stop trying to bring that ish up.

Nice to know I’m still taken extremely seriously around these parts.

That was maxx’s Ether to your Takeover. Real talk.

Keep forgetting to avoid SRK threads until I’ve actually read the comic/watched the movie/whatever. Thanks for spoiling everything for me again, SRK!

Didn’t Deathstroke beat the JLA like a drum in everybody’s favourite story Identity Crisis? Yes, I believed that happened. ALL SKILL, BABY.

Steve Wacker talks about Brand New Day. LOL he’s pretty funny. He clears up a few continuity issues.

Not with Thor still coming out (which you should TOTALLY pick up, btw. Great stuff).

I like this Steve Wacker guy. He’s not afraid to insult fanboys. I like that. He’s also not afraid to call out OMD as what it is.

DAMN. He did not fuck up when he chose that name.
