when on the frame data, a move’s startup 1+2 (ryu’s super), or a move’s recovery is 12+6 (bison ex psycho crusher), what does that + mean? from eventhubs:
ET: “When you see something like “1+4” (Akuma’s Ultra) in the Starting Frames column, the “1” represents the initial startup frame, the “+” represents frames outside of gameplay, and the “4” represents the remaining number of startup frames when the animation returns to gameplay. So, although Akuma’s Ultra shows a total of 5 startup frames, that “+” could actually represent something like 60-120 frames! While the initial super/ultra animation is cool to look at, it sure telegraphs the move to your opponent.”
okay so i get it for ryu’s super, the + means frames outside of gameplay, ie. frames in the super or ultra freeze. but what does this mean when it comes to recovery? other recoveries also have a + in there, like ryu’s hurricane kicks, and dragon punch. there’s no super freeze for those moves when they’re recovering. what does the + mean in those cases?
From what I gather if there is a + somewhere in the recovery frames, it denotes different states of recovery. So for example Ryu’s HP Shoryuken is 28+18 frames of recovery. That would mean there are 28 frames of recovery immediately after the attack is active and Ryu is airborne, falling towards the ground, then another 18 frames once Ryu is grounded.
If it’s for ultra or super, then 1+3 would mean 1 frame before the freeze (the super/ultra cut-scene) then 3 frames after it before the move activates.
The plus just means plus. It’s used whenever the number for that particular column/row can be broken up into seperate states, and whoever wrote it wanted to differentiate. The example TheLastWolves gives is one, another is any type of move which can be charged while it’s active, like focus attacks, Sakura’s fireball, Makoto’s dash punch, or Shinku Hadoken, where the first number will be the time you need to spend charging to get a particular bonus or state, and the second number will be the amount of start up after you let go.
