Made me laugh.
SCIV has the stupidest customization system ever. What is the point of pimping out your character when it all just falls off during battle anyway?
SC2,3,IV can suck it. I hear that one on Wii is pretty ass too but I haven’t played to give a real opinion.
Umm whats wrong with that design?
/this
Really, I didn’t even go into detail at all about the fight mechanics, I just discussed about mainly customization and a weapon I would like to see. I was generally vague on how this could be a chance for it to be majorly improved. I don’t think I really could get into it as far as gameplay mechanics, since I said I feel burnt out on FGs
Fixed.
i’ve asked in threads a bunch of times for this but i’ll do it again here: i never really “got into” sc and everyone always talks about how it went really down hill after 2, and i haven’t played much of the first two let alone the second two. so can someone give a brief summary of what they did to fuck it up? i’m just curious
^ Honestly tired of explaining it over and over, I’ve done it at least once for every SC thread that popped up and recently in the SRK lounge. So just search for SC threads and you should see.
I’m done talking about it, for the time being I’m uploading matches from YT of SC1 so people can see, rather than us talking about it all the time.
alright i retract that request yall. i will check out the other threads
NICE JOB BEING WRONG!
Before someone says, “That’s not a real tournament.”
Soul Calibur Scene in Japan is super dedicated. Fuck. They still do Kohatsu tournaments for SC2 and SC3:AE.
I dont give a shit what anyone says. Nightmare had the most badass Japanese voice in SC1. I dont even speak Japanese but I know badass when I hear it:

Funny how this thread went from complete speculation on SCV to a view in the evolution of the series.
I personally only played SC2 and SC4 for the most part, recently i’ve tried out SC1 but theres no online play and no local players so cant really say much for that one.
The thing I hate the most about the series is not only how they kept changing the character designs but also the characters move sets. Certain ones i can understand like nightmare in SC4 becuase seigfried was there, but what was the point with making changes to xian or ivy. Its not like they just added moves but they took some away or completly redesigned they way the character plays.
sirlins a weirdo sperglord but i dunno maybe this sums it up
thanks for digging that up for me, i legitimately did not have a clue about it until now
and what better person to have an explanation from than the bullet-time inventor david sirlin himself
I pretty much agree with that except that SC3 is not better than. . . any of the other games.
I actually like SC4 a lot.
I don’t know about Ivy. It’s like they feel the need to completely change her between every game. Arguably they made her more interesting to play in SC3 and SC4. I personally like her SC3:AE version the best. However for your other example, they nerfed some of her more abusable stuff and gave her some interesting new tools. Her basic gameplay from SC1/2 is still there. It’s just not as strong. She’s arguably a much cooler character now. I mean do you really want 3 move Xianghua to stay?
There’s a lot more to it than “Parries and ROs are super good in SC1 but bad everywhere else.” Hell, what Sirlin described about it in the last paragraph is still in SC4, in that most decent characters have launchers that fit within the 20 “guaranteed” frames a GI gives and possibly a slower but more powerful (And possibly safe on block) launcher to punish re-GI. Sirlin didn’t mention or know that VC in SC3 (Which pretty much encompasses the “very bad bugs”) negates GIs just as much if not moreso than G2 in SC2 did.
I’d say the other large difference between the earlier games and the later ones is the effectiveness of lows. In SC2, Yun (Quite arguably the worst character in the game, who has still managed to make good showings at a competitive level) has a 2K iirc that’s unreadable, safe on block and + on hit. In SC4 almost no character has a low like that (Though there are a few effective and unsafe but fast knockdown lows). Team Soul actually had a purpose for doing this with the Soul Crush system they introduced, but it’d take me a while to go into that and I’m tired right now lol. I think JoshtheFunkDoc made a big post on this in one of the other SC threads, but I can’t find it.
@Farp: Agreed. Every time I used X in previous games I felt like a dirty whore lol. She’s one of the most intuitive characters I’ve seen in an FG (Which is good) but she was also unfortunately solid to a fault for two games, as you know.
I personally prefer SC2 Ivy but I’m completly biased as that was my first SC game. I see your point about Xian though.
Question: If SC3 didn’t have all the game-breaking glitches in it, do you think it would have been competitive/popular?
SC3:AE is technically the “fixed” SC3. It’s a solid game. (Though I’d probably still consider it weaker than everything else.)
It’s difficult to know if it would have been popular in the US had it been easy to access. At the very least, in a lot of asian countries, it was enough to sustain competitive communities.
