Fuck tekken, fuck the juggling and fuck the load times in TTT2.
Would love to…if there were any tournaments actually held here. Was on 8WR for over 4 months and not a single tournament was hosted in London (the only place in the Uk with any sort of FG scene) during that whole time. Pretty much gave up on it at that point. Can’t play in a non-existant tournament unfortunately.
You don’t need to monetize every aspect of a F2P game, but it’s not up to me on what gets monetized. However the game will require an internet connection which eliminates any chances of local multiplayer.
Plus where’s this huge player base at from F2P because I don’t see it. DOA is free. Tekken is free. Where’s all the players at?
London just had a tournament in November for SC2 and SCV. And France also has a ton of people you could easily play as well. Plus there’s London players going to next big tournament in Cannes in a couple of months.
F2P hasn’t yet worked for fighting games and I don’t think it ever will. In MOBAs (aka leej aka league of legends, the only big F2P game right now) a rotating cast of playable characters is viable. It’s also a team game, so it’s easier to say “we lost because my shit team mates”
In fighting games if someone bops you with a paid character then you directly feel bad.
Requiring an internet connection and having local multiplayer really is not a mutually exclusive thing.
I have no idea on the numbers for DOA and tekken to comment. I would also add that I had no idea either game existed until coming back to this forum a week ago. I’m much more likely than the average person to know about them yet didn’t. You can’t have a playerbase if nobody knows the game exists. Killer instinct got decent publicity and even though it’s only on a single next gen console that’s outsold by it’s competitor, it still has a decent population I think?
Then there’s the fact that tekken is really hard to just pick up and play. If it’s multiplayer only this deters most people from learning because they’re just going to go online, get stomped and quit. SC on the other hand is MUCH easier to pick up and play. It’s the reason it was the one fighting game where if I had friends round that weren’t huge on fighting games we could still have fun playing it. It also certainly helps to have single player. However, it’s much easier to add multiplayer to a singleplayer game than it is to add singleplayer to a multiplayer game.
Last time I checked 8WR was probably like…July? Not sure now, but no tournaments or even local meetups for months just made me assume the game was completely dead here. To be honest, unless that period was a freak exception I would consider two or three events a year practically dead anyway. As for France, that would require a passport, three hour train journeys costing over £100. I think our definitions of “easily play” are a bit different.
Although saying all that I guess I should go back to lurking 8wr some more.
Sure, LoL is the only big F2P right not. Except for path of exile, dota 2, team fortress 2, insert list of MMOS here, practically every popular game on phones and facebook, planetside 2, warframe, world of tanks and as I wrote earlier, I think killer instinct is doing decently well also.
But you’re right, only big F2P game right now is LoL
Yeah, it was longer than that since I went on there. Last time I went there was before HoG opened up. Honestly no idea when that was. Further back than I thought though.
Edit: After looking back through that thread, last time I checked and posted on there was March 11th.
MOBAs were big before the F2P bandwagon, and F2P helped it to become even bigger.
Lost Swords is monetizing the amount of times you are able to actually play it so there’s no local multiplayer.
There hasn’t been many local meetups since 2012 once people found out that the online in SCV wasn’t ass. So you can easily play the other players in London online as well as the players in France online if you are really that interested in multiplayer.
Everything is relative. Of course LoL has a large playerbase, it’s THE most played game on PC.
Do you think SF4 is a “big” game? I can guarantee that Dota 2 at the least is also bigger. Hell, most of my earlier list is probably bigger than SF4. You don’t need to be the most popular game to be a big one. For ages CoD has dwarfed other games in sales on consoles, did that mean that battlefield was not a a big game? Of course not.
