Soul Calibur 5 Official Discussion

SC4 had a lot of items that were basically the same shit. Maybe 1 pants had an extra line or something, and they were just different color(you could change em anyways).

Pretty much this.

The characters in Soul Calibur have a variety of flavors and yet most of the items in CAS mode:

-vests
-robes
-dresses
-samurai pants

  • vests 2
    -samurai pants 2
    -samurai pants 3
    -robes 2
    -afro wig
    -pirate vest
    -generic battle armor

The best items were the upper body armor. The leg pieces were lacking. The neck pieces were lacking. It could have overall been done much better, and ultimately you had the tools to make a bunch of generic milkmaid/nun/samurai warriors. I would have liked a better variety of furs and animal prints, scarves, glasses, hairstyles, earrings…etc etc there were a lack of latin american, african and south asian items. Overall it was just boring.

Again, the mode was really how to make a cheap version of your favorite characters, they didnt even look real compared to most of the cast. Heres the best I could come up with using the items for some of my created characters:[details=Spoiler]

Ivy will keep the majority of her moves from SCIV. Always in sword stance doesn’t mean that she can’t use the coil and whip stance moves.
They just made her easier to use, but she is still versatile.

I just want to see them. The characters dont look like they have many moves.

Some moves have AutoGI properties. These do not cost meter AFAIK.

The difference in V is that you can now pick and align the textures for the item in question for certain items.

I’m excited for this game…but I think they’re trying to tackle too much and as a result shit is going to be really unbalanced.

They’re not the only devs working on it. Story mode is being worked on by CyberConnect 2. Besides, it’s been in development for almost 2 years now.

This.
And they also use the same engine from SCIV (just some minor improvements) I believe, so they have more time for balancing now.
How was SC3 any different in that matter though? You still had the extra characters who used the extra weapon styles, they weren’t only for the custom characters. Even if you used the extra styles, your character still was just using the moves from someone else.

In any case, the difference is that you’re able to completely costumize the character, including voice, gender and other details, while changing the outfit of a main character is obviously more limited.
On the other hand, SC3 did have more weapon types in general than SC4 due to those extra styles, including some rather exotic ones, so I can see the appeal there from the point of view of the character creator. On the other hand, I’m not sure if throwing into the game a bunch of rushed unfinished characters is really worth it. In any case, we don’t even know SC5’s full cast yet.

Eh, say what you want about them, but I’m happy they kept the SCIV pieces there. Scrapping everything and redoing from the start would just result in a smaller number of pieces in the end. The main video mostly showed pieces from SCIV, but the last few scenes showed several new ones too. Also, now they’ve added one extra chest layer and a hip layer, so even with the older pieces it’s possible to make more complex designs. The new texture system, extra layers and stickers also mean that we won’t get again some pieces that are basically the same aside from extra armor or different texture. SCIV custom characters often stood in a negative way due to the limited amount of layers and detail in the custom outfits, but these new additions might be able to solve those problems.

In addition to that, SCIV also had the 2nd costume pieces available for customs, and SCBD even had the 1P ones, I don’t think they’ll step back now. Well, maybe not the SCV parts themselves, but at least the SCIV ones and the 2nd costumes from SCV itself might be there.

The hairstyles shown were old… but look at how it was just the start of the scroll bar. For whatever reason, most options seem to be ordered “old material first -> new material at the end”. Just look at how the new chest layer was placed in the menu bellow the boots, rather than around the other chest parts. Same for the new hip layer, which is under the new chest one. New faces and hairstyles probably will all be thrown under the older ones. Doesn’t seem to be a particularly reasonable arrangement, but it seems to be the pattern they’re following…

Height affecting stats? In the Creation trailer. They quickly flash a graphic showing changes in speed, reach, easy of use and strength while changing the height. It was the only time stats were referenced in the video too.

Not sure about that. If height doesn’t affect stats, you might end up with odd animations/situations, like a smaller character with a hitbox bigger than his weapon or a bigger character with a hitbox smaller than his visible hit area. I think the stat changes from height will be applied in every mode. They’re probably there to make it, somehow, worth it to not just create the biggest characters possible for the extra range.

Of course, I can see some movesets getting broken even if those are just tweaks, but, even in SCIV, customs weren’t accepted in competitive play anyway, so this won’t change anything.

Fair enough.

I was the Maxi in those videos… Thanks for making me feel bad for making the game look bad :frowning:

My friends and I all suck at Soul Calibur, but tons of fun shall be had in the character creation mode.

I just came back from the event. Had some nice hands-on experience with the game and I’m liking it a lot.

Btw, there will be no additional guest characters apart from Ezio and we won’t see the return of a bunch of custom character fighting styles (like in 3), but they’ve saved something extra in the form of a fighting style that only custom characters can use (that will apparentely please the fans!).

I’m also gonna post a vid of the new Nightmare a bit later today. They really upped his speed I tell you!

Interesting. A custom character-only fighting style that “will please the fans”. It makes me wonder if perhaps the fighting style is for a character that is actually not included in SC5, or if perhaps it’s a whole new fighting style altogether.

Something tells me it’s Hwang’s style. That would definitely please the fans…well, maybe not actually…it’s either that, or that goofy tambourine fighting style. That’s what I think.

I do like the idea of having old character styles available as custom only character movesets. It would be cool to play as, say, Ivy Soul Calibur 2 style for example. Customs are banned at tournaments anyways, so it would be strictly casual.

Speaking of SC2 Ivy, can they get the fuck on the ball and bring that style back? the swinging stances were so beautiful and fluid and FUN.

I would have a hypegasm if they made bonus Fighting styles of former guest characters.

Making a custom character with a thin sword/katana and gravity and lightning magic? I like it.

I’m dead tired, so I’m hitting the sack, but here’s a quick look at the new Nightmare and some Ezio I recorded:

So in video 1 we learn that if we make enough noise they will make Rapheal more like his SC2 counter part(maybe this will work for all of the returning cast), and that in this month we will learn more about the single player mode.

and in 2 online will be better that 4, and info for new online modes coming soon.
