Soul Calibur 5 Official Discussion

My reaction to Soul Calibur 5

Also Is alpha Patroklos any good? Cause I like Setsuka before but I wasn’t really sure how to use her.

Honestly I like SCV because of Natsu. First character in a 3D fighter I feel being offensive with isn’t going to get me auto-killed as she has absolutely amazing oki.

A:6 WS! 6A+B4 A:6 3KKK FC A+B 44K

Wall combo starting off a 5A that deals 140 dmg

shit is so fun

Natsu sure is ridiculous, to the point I’m not sure she won’t be toned down. At the moment she’s just a step above the other amazing characters like Leixia, Cervy, Pat(both versions) and Algol.

I think this might be my favorite fighting game right now, this year sure is flooded with fighters though so we’ll see how that turns out.

I have never attempted to get into 3D games seriously, but I picked this up and it’s pretty fun. I’m still a bit skeptical that it will be deep enough that I’ll want to invest enough practice time into it to be competitive, but it’s definitely fun to mess around with. Character creation is tons of fun, online is really good, but as others have said, the single-player is (unsurprisingly) pointless and dull. Arcade is literally just random fights and the story mode is you playing as Patroklos and Pyrrha against randoms, interspersed with sepia tone sketches of a nonsensical story with bad voice acting (My friend and I were joking about a drinking game where you take a shot every time Patroklos angrily says the word “Malfested”). It’s all good though, because if you’re evaluating fighting games based on single-player content, you’re doing it wrong. I’d say that if you have some money to burn or want something to play casually with your friends/online, 100% buy SCV, but if you’re looking for a new competitive endeavor, hold off a bit longer.

I’m liking Asteroth myself so far. It’s interesting to see a real grappling character in a 3D game, although I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he turns out to be bottom tier. His command grabs seem to be slower than a lot of moves and are techable, but I’m probably doing it wrong, trying to play him like Zangief. =/

I really liked the story, because I main Pat.

Im loving all the positivity coming from everywhere about this game, shame I won’t be able to play it until april, but at least by that time the game woulda developed and I can just learn the proper shit. Toronto top tier just ran a tourney recently, some nice algol, astaroth, natsu, ivy play to name a few

Check out the vid I posted, theres some very solid asta play. He isn’t supposed to be played like gief(since his command grabs are tech-able), but he does have a nasty oki game(in the old games at least, don’t know how its translated yet) and his ring out game still looks extremely intact.

My main before was Xianghua, but for this one, I’m really leaning towards alpha Patroklos. It’s basically a palette (polygon?) swap of Setsuka with a few modifications. I don’t know what it is, but he’s good, while Lexia doesn’t seem quite as tricky as Xianghua was. a-slide-k for instance, is gone, and you have to start with a parry-ish thing to do it. That was one of her best moves, and in higher level play, just doing the first part and stopping was one of the best ways to stop your opponent dead (not high, because I never was that good, but higher).

Maybe with all the changes, Setsuka’s style works better? Who knows. What I do know is I’m having fun and enjoy this game.

How is everyone’s online experience? I thought the PS3 version would have more competition, but it’s hard to find people. I’m regretting getting this for the PS3. Might try a craigslist swap or something…

or if anyone is interested in trading here, I’m in the NYC area!

Love Setsuka. Not playing Alpha. i probably move on to the EMO new bitch in town.

Yeah, I fired up Natsu earlier tonight and my first reaction was “every button I push does ridiculous damage.”

I’ve been having some trouble with Dampierre’s Poker Bluff stance. When I try to do the Poker Bluff kicks or throws, I almost always do a rising kick or a standing throw. It doesn’t seem like it matters how I enter the stance, I can never seem to do the attacks when I want. What am I doing wrong?

Call me a scrub but Legendary souls is fucking bullshit.
Stupid input reading son of a bitch

According to the guide,

Characters with fast, safe lows are more favorable.
Strong Defensive style is nearly required.
Master throw teching,
You MUST know frame traps, and be comfortable with break moves
Characters that have good, quick, punishing moves, such as Pat Justice Step, perform better in this mode.

You need to do the inputs earlier. I had this problem.

That’s what I was afraid of. I was hoping I could just lay there as long as I wanted and kick them whenever they got close. :stuck_out_tongue: I need to go work on my Dampierre skills I guess.

The difficulty in the game is laughable.
Reads inputs, everything on hard becomes, oh shit who put marvel in, that move doesn’t have recovery? Why the hell isn’t everything unlocked from the start.

The story was terrible. I’m sorry. It really was. It tried too hard, and using the renders instead of the sephia toned pencil sketches would have been a welcome addition.

the character customization is great. Most characters feel pretty cool of who I’ve used thus far. I kinda wish they would have stuck to some of the old characters. Patrokolos and that chick have the most cardboard thin personalites I’ve already seen in any piece of media.

3 mimics. No comment.

Tira and ivys changes. I’ve found they have a decent portion of their old moves so I’m happy.

Single player mode ( the tales of souls I think it was?) of 3 was so tedious but it worked so well. I played it for hours.
3’s story mode was actually challenging and didn’t force you to use 2 characers, though they happen to be more than strong characters so its ok.

Zwei and viola are cool. Zwei seems like he could wreck shit, viola seems cool but doesn’t do the greatest damage.

Overall I dig the game but then again I liked 4.
Also 4 had better music. Ill take the stage music from 4’s ice coffin of the sleeping ancient over anything in this game.

I thought this too until seeing some of the close ups of the faces in this game shudder. I really didn’t like the story mode either and Nightmare in arcade mode feels like a crapshoot.

HAH!
Seriously though, the Taki did ninja things, Mitsu the rebellious samurai did rebellious samurai things, Ivy the dominatrix did dominatrix things, Patrokolos and Pyrrha are just more broad.

Though I don’t see the problem with A.I. outside Legendary Souls, at least in comparison to most fighters where it randomly gets better, analyzes your fighting style (GG/BB), or is both mindreading and has broken properties like SF2.

how could you not like the incestuous undertones of the story :P. Aren’t you happy that Pat was totally going to get to laid after he and pyrrah walked into the sunset?

ill take the ninja, samurai and dominatrix over
"please dont fight me im afraid" as you proceed to wreck shit with sophitias ridiculous moves.
“I’m so alone” And
"Malfested" “malfested” “whatever” “I’m the rude protagonist who can fight well who needs to find my way”

They are hella more annoying then anything in previous games

The story just, made me wonder why they did a time skip, took the immortal guy out, then did whatever that story was. It was almost worse than 4 but at least the characters had unique endings. I just thought it was cool we get to see what tira did in 3’s ending come to fruition, its too bad it was wasted on CAS personality 6 from soul calibur 4

Pfft, people said that same kinda stuff about Xianghua, Cassandra, Tira, Talim, and Amy.
Siegfried did the exact same shit too.
Ten bucks says the community will grow to tolerate and/or like them and then complain about the next new archetype that comes along. Like every fanbase EVER.
