Soul Caliber tiers

How about:

Aris won world SC2 in 2k4 (iirc) with Voldo
DTN came second with Nightmare

Mick and RTD just happened to be like the only two players who made it to the SC2 tournament at the last evo it was hosted.

And even then, Mick used Cassie for the better part of the tournament BECAUSE sophie sucked so much ass.

Other top notch players included:

Floe (Taki)
Semi (Astaroth)
Kage (Ivy)
TieTYT (NM)

It was pretty much undisputed in the sc community that the best character in the game was Cervantes (half life combos off counter hit 3B, 100% anti step 3A, + a bunch of other ridiculous tools). Followed by X (called 5 move X cause she was so cheap with 3A, 22B, throw, 3B and A,A,B).

After that Yoshi was considered top, and then the rest of the cast pretty much sharing mid tier status. Yunsung, Raphael and Maxi all near the bottom.

See SC2 was so much about step-G that it wasn’t even funny. good step+high damage launcher+hard to step moves = top tier.

That’s precisely why sophie was low tier. Her moves all had garbage tracking, so she was vulnerable to step-G. Her step was unimpressive (compared to say Ivy, who had the best step in the game) so she couldn’t abuse Step-G very well.

So despite tiering and actual characters used by top players, so much of the game is based on step-G abuse, reactionary blocking+punishing and basic yomi (high/low/throw mixups) that it didn’t really matter that much what character you picked at high level.

Seriously, I played Tharon Mortis a year or so ago and he beasted me all day all night with yunsung (until i pulled X and gave him some run for his money).

We’re talking about SOUL CALIBUR ONE. Not sc2

However, Floe was probably the best sc2 player in the world.

i was talking about sc2, since a lot of other people were, not sc1.

i do know this is an sc1 thread, but it did get derailed with talks of sc2 and 3, and thanks for the info newb.

need i say more?

I was giving you a hard time just trying to keep the thread on course is all.

Sophie WAS really good in 2. How can you say she wasnt?

Also, that cervantes compilation doesnt mean all that much because most of those things werent even in tournament play. Tharon Mortis also made a Yunsung compilation with those same GI tricks.

Let’s talk about the uber broken 3. Were those ever set in stone post VC?

SC2 was Xianghua, Cervantes, Yoshi, Ivy, than Mitsu.

i like aris for best sc2. dominated dtn in france

yeah, but dtn hadn’t revealed the power of raph at that time yet.

also, aris started a rumour that he was playing yoshi and gave up voldo. So apparently dtn learned how to beast yoshi with nightmare, then got completely surprised by voldo tricks at worlds.

which is odd, seeing as to how nightmare vs. voldo is like a 7/3 or 8/2 matchup favouring nightmare.

floe i think was next level shit. his b,a patterns and ridiculous mixups and rushdown style was top notch. but non of the guys who did well at nationals the year before really played after that. kageh, floe, semi, etc.

actually it does. I’ve played tharon. that ish is nasty. I’ve even seen mad setups for that shit with mitsu. mitsu’s 1B** guardbreak -> link 66A+B was one of many ideal setups.

and it’s more than that. cervy’s bt a+b was like i17 +3 on block crumple stun on hit. With like 309 JFs to set it up? Maybe you’ve never played a good cervy.

cervy was so stupid. every time he knocked you down he could setup a BT A+B. failing that if you did anything but block low (roll backwards, lie dead, roll left roll right) he could 1A instead.

I’m from Chicago and thats where alot of good people were for sc2. Fetz’ cervy was really good. But that was when the game was still somewhat fresh. Id like to see a good cervy vs. a really good X player. Like mick or rtd and see what happens.

Also, 1A isnt that good of a low, I forgot if it was unsafe or not, but it could be blocked on reaction.

I watched Floe dominate dtn in chicago. Not taking anything away from aris though.

SC2 sucked.

shaddup! :lovin:
