It’s just really cheap, free chip damage, and not a lot of characters can really do anything about it other than just take it.
It’s hard (read: not a good idea) to press buttons against Fei Long at the best of times, and even though he’s negative, he’s not gonna give a fuck about half the cast pressing buttons to control him after it because he’ll just trade most of the time anyway. And the chip damage on EX Rekka is JOKES, lol. But yeah, you can’t do it through the fight as that’s a shit use of meter most of the time. It’s common to find Fei players in a situation at the end of a round where you can close it out with repeated EX Rekka > EX Rekka.
He also has a stupid mixup against characters with crappy jabs and shorts:
Point-blank cr.jab xx EX Rekka > EX Rekka > cr.jab xx EX Rekka > EX Rekka / EX Tenshin / Throw / Bait.
It’s all meter dependant admittedly (but Fei Long doesn’t need it for much in my opinion), and all them options lead to crazy damage, skank setups or the corner (or all of them in some cases).
I think if it was discouraged from it being used as a chip tool (which is what 2nd EX Rekka is; 1st EX Rekka gets you in anyway) by making it so you can get a light punish on it at least (like, cr.forward xx fireball) then it would be fairer.
1st EX Rekka should stay the same though as that is there just to get in, and it’s what it was designed for. Nothing wrong with that being safe. Although I do understand Highland’s and others opinions on 2nd EX Rekka; it’s not game breaking, it’s just really strong.

Yeah the one from the front page. It’s pretty good. I don’t think Bison is that low though, I think he’s well under rated. Good list though. Fei’s probably about right.
So why was fei so low tier in vanilla? I remember at a battlefield arcadia when Justin still lived in new york, he chose fei and was celebrated as a low tier hero, because the console characters (fei, cammy, dan, sakura, rose and gen) were terrible…
Vanilla was kind of weird. Nobody really had any time to soak that game in before Super hit and Fei was alway’s one of the more obscure characters.
I’d say he was only low tier because the easy characters were retardidly good - Sagat and Ryu, the mix up characters were retardidly good - Rufus, Seth and Akuma. The grappler was good - Zangief, even Balrog was godlike. There were a lot of characters in Vanilla that had to work very little for big rewards.
Fei’s never really had one aspect of his game that’s over powered. I think he’s a really good example of a classic solid Street Fighter character.
Fei is definitely one of the hardest characters to play at the highest level. People who complain about him dont realize this. Thats why you only see 2 Fei’s winning around the world as of now. Mago & Fuudo.
Admittedly there are a whole lot of characters that only have a couple people winning with them at a high level. Seth, Gen, Rufus, Adon, even Viper. Haven’t seen a whole lot of Viper lately.
Cammy and Akuma both have more than fair amount of top player representation because they are the best characters in the game.
Fei is top no doubt but I think people generally prefer mix up/rush down as opposed to tactical zoning and footsie’s. The more bullshit a character has the more likely players are likely to be drawn to them.
Anyone ever wanted to give up on Fei? Or just not use him anymore? Maybe I just should. I lose to the same damn BS EVERY SINGLE TIME. 3 Years and you jump at me, and game over.
