I think at this point I think the video game division of Sony will be ok. The ps4 is leading the pack this generation. Especially after MS shot itself in the foot with all the DRM and $500. It’s going to be awhile before MS can dig out of that self induced PR nightmare.
However, Sony TV and Sony Cellphones are ghosts of what they once were. Their phones were limited and crappy. The TV line used to be god-tier (and worth the extra expense the sony name caused) but Samsung came in and has been putting out quality stuff at much lower prices. Yes, some of their stuff has had issues, but Samsung has been on the rise while Sony has been on the decline.
Sony still charges higher price points for tech when it doesn’t come close to leading the pack like it once did. Consumers are voting with their wallets at this point.
And the stuff that DOES come to other countries takes over a damn year, like Malicious Rebirth. I’ve been trying to find out if Vita is easier to program for than ps3…and wondering why psn titles that don’t look like cellphone games don’t get vita AND ps3 releases. Realistically, the vita can run every single ps3 downloadable title with little graphical difference, and with an easier time programing said port. Capcom is fervently denying the system’s existence, so no 3rd strike, Marvel 2, Marvel Origins, etc. Now we’re at the point where devs are about to be called out for bullshit, citing their lack of interest in the vita was because the install base is too small. Shit’s growing monthly, so what’s the REAL reason for a trickle of games? Why no psn ports or true (releases that include Vita) multiplats, Capcom? What happened to that port of KOF XIII you were so interested in, SNK? You ported the shit out of that game, to everything except a portable system with the controls to properly play it. What we’re seeing on the Vita right now is what happens when idiots get their wish for mainly exclusive software: you get a fuckin’ trickle cuz that shit takes months to years to program. Ports and multiplats full the gap and increase interest, not hit-or-miss niche games that occur maybe 3 times a year. You can’t sell enough software to keep a system afloat if all you got is 2-5 titles that generate interest. Diversity is the key.
Thank you for that laugh I just had. I tried to picture it in my head now and the idea is ridiculous but somehow might sell. I want to see Ang, Yo Gaba Gaba creatures, the monsters from Are Real monsters and Clarissa Knows it all in a game with Ryu and Ken.
True.
Well the PS3 used a IBM made Cell Processor (Power PC processor), its the same CPU architecture Apple abandoned for Intel x86 processors as the x86 family is easier to program for.
Its Why the PS4 and Xbone switched to AMD made x86 processors.
Now to the Vita, the Vita uses an Arm processor, same processor family as the GBA/DS/DSi/3DS, same processor family as every smart phone including androids and iPhones, most tablets, The Raspberry Pi, Ouya, nvida shield and the PSP. Arm processor is relatively easy to program for considering the number of apps on the Google Play Store and the Apple iTune store. The Question is how Sony implemented the OS for the Vita, an handheld that had more power than the PS3 or Xbox 360.
vita is a good system. companies aren’t making games for it because people don’t own the system. its been an uphill fight since the system came out: there isn’t any games out for it, so people don’t buy it, which leads to low install bases, so companies are weary about investing money into making games for it, so there isn’t any games out for it…
they are investing heavily in japan in the vita sector, because like psp, it is just better for japan. there are a ton of vita games on schedule for them, and that’s likely to drive up system sales there. pairing it up with ps4 will help drive sales in other markets, and hopefully some trickle down will occur.
vita’s problem was that it released too early, and amid no hype. if there was anything positive about vita’s situation is that they learned and applied the correct changes to how they presented the ps4.
You’d figure we get the PSP treatment again from Capcom where we could get some ports/remakes/collections again, they could dump the entire DMC collection and the rest of their Dreamcast/PS2/PSN/XBLA catalog but “complications”. Inafune makes Soul Sacrifice with Marvelous AQ and SCEAJ (Sony Japan), you’d figure they would hook up and make Mega Man Legends 3 if Capcom gave them the go head but nah “issues”, but we can put Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS but not Vita because “3DS and PS Vita infrastructure let alone developing games for them are extremely different beasts. Even just the screens as you mention are completely different resolutions/functions.” despite the game also being released for Wii U/360 and the damn PS3.
SNKP has a chance to correct all those shitty PSP collection ports, hell they could port their shitty netcode XBLA collection too (NGBC, KOF 2002UM, 98UM, Garou, Fatal Fury Special) and even port KOF XIII or up-port KOF XI but that’s too much apparently. Harada hasn’t said anything about a TTT2 port despite being asked many times before on twitter.
Lab Zero said they want to put Skullgirls on Vita but god knows if that’ll ever become a thing with the issues they had to deal with lately.
The canival stupid will continue I suppose, and no the Vita isn’t harder to developer for than the PS3, if they can make games in HD using the rubix cube architecture known as the “cell” in the PS3 then they can certainly make games for the Vita, the only known cockblock is that the carts Sony uses for the games have limited (4GB memory) IIRC which should really be dealt with.
I agree but lemme say something, Japan gets more Vita games because people actually buy games over in Japan compared to the US. There’s various games that were released for 3DS and Vita (like Conception 2 for example) that sold better on Vita than 3DS despite the 3DS having a 7x bigger install base over there.
Idea Factory were going to cease making Vita games but decided to reconsider after Soul Sacrifice was well received over in Japan. Persona 4G and Dragons Crown despite being a up-port and multi-plat are past 700 and 800K respectively, one outsold the PS2 version and the other being Vanillaware’s most successful and profitable game to date.
And for anyone wondering PS3/PSV are still a thing, just mostly in Japan
Shin Gundam Musou
Dynasty Warriors
J Stars Victory
DBZ Battle of Z
Atelier up-ports
Hatsune Miku project F/2nd
SRW Masuokishin 3
SRW Z3.1
Eiyuu Densetsu: Sen no Kiseki and a sequel was just announced
Super Heroine Chronicle
Kagero: Dark Side Princess / Deception 4
Disgaea 3/4 up-ports
Natural Doctrine
Hyper Dimension Neptunia up-ports
etc etc
PSV and PSP is also a thing
Toukiden
God Eater 2
But I digress, imo part of the reason why the Vita is tanking in the US is because SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment of America) either pretends it doesn’t exist or treats it as a PS4 peripheral which isn’t going to do much until the PS4 gets more games too, I’m convinced they either don’t want anything to do with the system or most of the higher ups would rather sweep it under the rug. Soul Sacrifice/Killzone Merc/Tearaway could have all been poised to do much better in the US but they focused all their attention on the PS4, which is understandable but could have handled better.
Adam Boyes is probably the only dude at SCEA who even remotely gives a purple fuck about it, he made or is making the Sony 3rd party relations group a thing, they’re supposed to help localize more games by doing it via Sony’s bill rather than waiting for 3rd parties to nut up.
I don’t think the system is going to light up here charts in America (not after the 3DS thrashed it last year) unless there’s a mass planned release schedule like Nintendo did with the 3DS last year, the only thing that can save it here is more games first and foremost, then a vita tv release date for US/EU, then another possible price cut somewhere down the line.
The Wii U and Vita can get their second wind this year if Nintendo/Sony do it right.
Anybody remember the quality of pirated VHS? All those hours of fucking about with the recorder to get the picture screen semi bearable to watch? This anti piracy thing is just hating.
This 79% chance of Sony going bankrupt is some wall st bullshit as well, their stock price went up since the PS4 came out, they probably generated this fear so niggas sell out early and the jews can pick that shit up on the cheap and buy more gold. Sony aint going no where.
You are aware that the PS4 and X1 are currently deadlocked in sales right? Both companies still have new markets they will need to market to, however it is also true that the PS dropped in 19 more markets than X1, a week early and $100 cheaper. I know the general concensus on the internet is that anything MS is bad or “evil” etc, but in truth the gaming market is much larger than what the dedicated forumites like us would believe.
Sony’s biggest drain has been its electronics division but not necessarily SCEA or the Playstation brand. They really missed a huge oppurtunity with the Vita, whoever green lit those proprietary memory cards literally f-cked the Vita over before it even had a chance to take off. As for us the gamers and the future of Sony, I don’t think there is much to worry about for now. What this means for the future of the PS brand is another story altogether. Whether Sony has to sell some divisions or reduce the size of their business footprint, they are not going to turn their back on a gaming platform they have just dropped. I am not sure if you guys are aware, but insurance sales make up a large portion of Sony’s operating capital. Home, auto, and life insurance is their largest market, followed by music. If anything, the PS brand will be key to Sony recovering some of that lost revenue. In truth, I know Sony though it clever to drop the camera peripheral in an attempt to undercut MS, but I honestly believe that was a mistake. Both companies are already losing money per console sold, currently the Wii U is the only console sold for just over production costs, with only a single game sell needed for it to break even. The other major console manufacturers need as much as 6 titles sold to reach that figure, Sony may need a couple more due to the lower price point.
This is also large part of the reason for the changes to PSN pricing. Sony could simply no longer afford the costs of server maintenance of a network that size with little to no income.
Samsung did but a damper on much of their Bravia television sales, however you must not forget to include Vizio in that. Vizio came to popularity by selling top quality LCD’s in large HD televisions for closer to their manufacturer’s cost. They have since gone on to become a major player in that market, while the Vizio name is one now associated with high quality and not the stigma of bargain basement that the company used to have. Include in that mixture competition from other LCD manufacturers like Lucky Goldstar and Dynex and the Bravia really became much too overpriced for advantages Sony’s competition had learned to equal. Their phone market has turned to crap and has been for a while, which I am sure the likes of Apple and HTC didn’t help things in that field of production either.
90% of all percentages are made up on the spot (including this one).
But seriously, it’s been known for a while that Sony is in trouble financially. I believe someone from Sony said that the PS4 “isn’t allowed” to fail. Sadly, I think the PS4 would have to be another PS2 to even have a chance at turning around their financial problems.
@ManRightCheaYear-over-year the Xbox has lost money for MS. Find a year where Xbox was profitable since the OG system to now because I can’t. PlayStation/SCE was profitable as late as 2006. If Sony lost more money during the PS3 years, okay that’s understandable, considering their troubles early last gen selling a $600 machine at a loss, but PlayStation has been profitable for Sony Corp overall in the product’s not-so-short history. My point still stands (all 3 console makers have a reason to restructure or drop out of the console business, unless their fortunes turn around this gen)
