You can turn off catch-up. You can turn off All-Star moves. You can turn off level hazards. (although, I’m going to leave All-star and level hazards on)
Also, I have decided that All-Stars are more frequent than I thought; about the same as a Bullet Bill actually. If you’re in 8th, assuming you aren’t too far behind, an all-star will take you to 4th or 5th (maybe 2nd or 3rd if it is a close race). If you’re in 3rd and you get an All-Star, then you’ll probably get a good lead.
One cool thing I saw today. In one House of the Dead stage you are on a rooftop and there is a sharp turn. If you are in Super Sonic form before the turn, then the camera doesn’t turn and it is sidescrolling until you finish super sonic or fly off the rooftop. I don’t know if this is supposed to happen, but it is still cool.
P.S. I only paid $30 for this game. The sales clerk didn’t notice that she had put the DS version’s price tag on the 360 version and sold it for $29.99. Awesome.
Wouldn’t say it is anything like F-Zero. It plays almost exactly like Mario Kart, but no blue shell. Also, drifting feels more like Outrun 2 than Mario Kart.
You know the game was made by Sumo Digital, right? (They handled the Outrun 2006 port). It also has Outrun 2 style Missions (with the same grading graphics).
Here is my favorite to least liked:
Sonic - Beach Levels
Sonic - Casino Levels
JSRF Levels
Samba de Amigo Levels
Billy Hatcher Levels
Sonic - Fortress Levels
House of the Dead Levels
Super Monkey Ball Levels
Note: There are 3 levels of each type.
Note II: The Super Monkey Ball levels are actually really good representations of the game. They are just hard as hell.
EDIT!: All-Star Moves are ALWAYS disabled in online play.
SA2:Battle was better in some ways, but lacking in others when compared to SA1/DX. One thing that bothered me greatly was the graphics. Normally you’d expect the graphics to improve (or at least be consistent) over the previous game, but Battle took a step backwards with the graphics. All the character models in SA2 were rough and dull, only a few feet away from PS1 quality. They were still decent though.
Another thing I hated was the predetermined Story paths. I don’t get to choose who to play when I want to: I now gotta play in order of the story. I don’t even get to roam around doing other stuff. The most you could do was go to Chao World. I wasn’t big on raising chaos, but still, I did enjoy free running/flying/gliding through open terrain to get to the next stage.
As much as I enjoyed playing as Robotnik, I certainly didn’t enjoy spending 60% of Dark Story mode shooting stuff with his mech, especially with the annoying target system. I could say the same for Tails, but there was more Sonic and Knuckles stages that I didn’t mind the Hero Story. If Shadow had more then 4 action stages, then I wouldn’t be complaining.
On the other hand, SA2:B did have improvements. Instant Light speed dash, a decent 2-player mode (not to say that pseudo 2P mode with Tails isn’t the most fun you ever had with the little guy), and no fishing whatsoever (although I do admit it wasn’t that bad). Still, It’s a solid game. Had they kept the major traits of the previous game intact (free roaming adventure fields, Smooth sheened character models, and seperate selectable characters) it would have been the greastest 3D Sonic game period.
I missed running around in the SA1 overworld…one of the things that I didn’t like about SA2. I didn’t mind running from area to area in SA 1 because the characters had their abilities in tact in the overworld, I had fun running around the Mystic Ruins area especially as Sonic. Unleashed only halfway brought that back…I thought it was lame as hell that they limited his speed in the human inhabited areas and i’m wondering if that has anything to do with how the game was designed or if they just decided to limit him.
I can’t agree with you on SA1’s graphics in comparison to SA2’s though. SA2 had more and better textures than SA1 especially on Shadow…not to mention better animation. SnSr58TaMd8#t=0m6s"]Characters didn’t walk awkwardly in place during cutscenes and mouth for sonic weren’t all over the damn place. In fact I was loling hard watching some of these cutscenes just now to get examples of what I was talking about.
I’m probably the only one who liked Sonic’s Soap shoes redesign from SA2.
My guess is for balance sake. You can turn off/on catch-up if you like, but All-Star is always off. Like I said earlier…I have gotten All-Star in 3rd place before…if that were to happen online, then the match would be decided already. The chances of it happening are very low, but you can get it in the higher positions.
Also…it takes WAY too long to unlock all the characters/levels. I have them all now, but I spent the better part of 5-6 hours unlocking (meaning I raced the same thing over and over till I got monies).
On a side note, the game says that the Turbo Boost stat includes the Strength of a Boost and Charge Time for Boost, but this is wrong. The time it takes to charge a boost during drift is clearly mirrored in the Acceleration stat. Which is why no characters (with the exception of Sonic) have max Turbo Boost with high Acceleration.
I got a chance to play the 360 version of the game extensively over a friend’s house. It fucking solidified my purchase. Played both Shadow and Sonic…more than likely Sonic is going to be my main racer.
I had a lot of fun with what I played…hopefully if this game does well it’ll get a sequal and they can represent more Sega games that should have made the cut like Streets of Rage or Shinobi. The controls were hard to get used too at first since I was in Mario Kart mode but it only took a couple of races to adjust. Does anyone know if this game has drift in it? I tried doing it behind some of the cars but there didn’t seem to be any indication that it was there.
truth…Sonic has the most broken all-star move in the game…however Bonaza Bros. bring teh rape I havent gotten around to getting everyone yet im focusing on music and levels first…Music selection is amazing and of course make sure you guys taunt to piss off everyone behind you…
eggman and amy are underrated…I only have knuckles so far…lol
you can drift in here…there are three levels of drift boost…360 gets banjo and two extra levels…oh well…you wont be disappointed
my gamestop only had one copy…"did you preorder? "just sell me the game so you can meet your quota for the day’
$50…spooty got it for $30…(lady but the DS price tag on the 360)
The truth is that anyone with an Acceleration stat higher than half the bar and a Turbo Boost stat that is at least half the bar is good. Nothing else really matters (unless you are on a course with long straight-aways).
I believe Sonichuman was talking about Drafting and not Drifting. Of course the game has drifting, the game does not have drafting.
There are multiple Game Stops around here. All of them only got 1 of the 360 version (but they had 2 wii, which is retarded because 360 is the best version).
EDIT: 360 does not have 2 extra levels. All the versions (except maybe DS) have 24 levels. The 360 version has 2 extra characters (Banjo-Kazooie and the 360 Avatar).
EDIT II: Apparently All-Stars are disabled in online play because they are not lag-friendly. Also, DLC will be coming very soon and it is awesome. Sumo might drop another patch to further smooth the Final Fortress framerates. Source: Source
Does anyone know how to hit that first shortcut in Dark Arsenal (the ramp directly in front of you when you start the race)? I’ve tried boosting off of it, but I still never make the jump to the other side. The second ramp (later in the level) is not hard to make with a boost, but that first one…I just can’t do it. I even tried watching the #1 Time Trial ghost and I can’t figure out how he does it.
yeah…I even tried to look up the defiiniton of both and I STILL failed. Thanks for answering my question though guys.
No ASM online is a bummer but no biggie. Like they said, I’d rather the online be working properly than being unplayable. They’ll have time to optimize the code and put more stuff in whenever the sequal spins in (if it does well enough).
Sonic the Hedgehog has the magical ability to make me purchase non-fighting games. First it was Unleashed, and now All star Racing. I don’t know how he does it.
I don’t even like racing games. Oh well, I guess that Bonanza Brothers car was the straw that broke the camel’s back. “Ah ha-ha!” Those two are bad@$$ with their segmented limbs and stuff.
Anyways, can’t wait for it to arive in the mailbox (PS3 version)…
Got my PS3 copy!
Anyone has me on PSN, let’s set up a time and date to play together online =D
Overall the game is very fun, graphics/visuals are beautiful and I have YET to see any framerate issues! This game plays like a charm.
My main gripe is how static the character models feel, especially in the victory ceremony, I mean heck I’ve seen more charisma and vigor from a CTR character being in 3rd place than any character who is first in SEGA All-Stars XD
While I didn’t get the special edition that had the Ryo code…I’ll put down the cash to playing as the Forklift.
