First of all I’m pretty sure “cycle era” is a term you just made up, so stop using it as if it’s part of some common use lexicon, and why Sonic Adventure is trash has nothing to do with aging. It wasn’t good when it was new. It’s bad for the same silly criterion you just tried to use to defend Unleashed. You can’t say "a game is good except for that one half that wasn’t. If half of a game is bad then it’s a bad game. Fishing, digging for emeralds, and walking around in boring giant robots makes for a bad Sonic game, and when more time is spent on those parts than the sorta kinda ok parts then the game is bad.
It’s funny considering the last couple of titles have been good and right now Lost World even have the absolutely Sonic purists who will only ever play the Genesis titles saying the future is looking good. And they’re the ones who never bother with the cycle. They just go straight to hating if it’s 3D, and if it’s 2D it takes maybe 5 minutes before shitting on the physics.
The Future is dismal for Sonic and Sega. Other than Retro Ports Sega hasn’t released anything of quality in years, in some cases like Sonic decades.
What?
You think Sonic 4, Colors, Generations and Lost worlds are good?
I am a all or nothing kinda guy and I only found the PAST or retro levels of Generations kinda interesting.
Sonic Colors wants to make me burn down children hospitals and orphanages.
And Lost worlds is slowly making me morph into a Grump Cat outlook on the world
Sonic Tier Level

Shit Tier: Adventures series, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (SNES ROM HACK of Speedy Gonzales)
Unspeakable Sin tier: All other 3D/ 2.5 “Sonic” gamez
I liked exploring the huge environments with the knuckles/rouge stages, Sonic/Shadow stages were amazing, and Tails/Robotnik were the only lame parts of the game.
Honestly, even if it was 2/3rds bad, I’d still play it for the Sonic/Shadow stages. That shit was hype.
Hmm… one of my favorite Game Gear games was Tails Adventure (completely different from Tails Sky Patrol) although it definitely didn’t play anything like a Sonic game. I also remember having a lot of fun with Sonic Chaos on the Game Gear.
I’d say the last Sonic game I played with any sort of confidence was Sonic Advance. The series stopped being relevant to me after that. I might give Generations a shot, but it’ll have to get the Steam sale treatment before I do.
2D Sonic games have been consistently good for the last 3 Nintendo handheld generations (aside from Brotherhood and shit like that).
As for the 3D games, people want a Sonic Adventure 3 that lives up to its huge potential. Instead, they’ve gotten rail games and overwhelmingly bad gameplay gimmicks that make the originals’ glitches and annoying side characters look like they weren’t flaws.
Also just for frame of reference, I really hated Mario 64 and I do not consider it a actual Mario Game.
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of those series that didn’t fair well into 3D. To me Sonic was a fast paced Platformer at heart, and unfortunately most platformer games really did a bad transition to the 3D format.
Only reason this worked for Megaman Legends is Legends didn’t try being the old Megaman series, it decided to be its own thing while at the core still have megaman, a different Megaman but a Megaman there.
The issue to me is that the Adventures series tried to be the same as the old Sonic series but ignoring the core parts of Sonic. They took away Sonic’s super speed, this was like taking away Superman’s stregnth, it stoped being the character than fans loved. The Levels felt like a visual demo of the Dreamcast capabilities with a character stand-in that looked like Sonic instead of being Sonic. That after I looked pass the pretty visuals I saw this wasn’t a Sonic game. I never again get the sense that the redesign Sonic stand-in never really went fast.
I don’t think that the Adventure games lacked speed (when playing as Sonic/Shadow). Can you really find me many other 3D games where you can move and accelerate so freely through any environment? Sonic Adventure 2 had limited speed, but Sonic Adventure 1 let you move WAY faster, especially with the Spin Dash glitch.
Sonic Adventure is more of a one-man race than a platformer, but so were the originals. Same goes for the environment being a big artistic presentation. The original trilogy was on a different level of easy compared to the other platformers out there. Wasn’t the #1 criticism of the old Sonic games that you just hold forward and watch the pretty colors go by?
IMO the Knuckles-style levels weren’t a problem either.
Thanks for that frame of reference because it gave people a reason to not take you seriously. At that point we know immediately that ANY potential platformer that even looks 3D is automatically shit tier to you.
