Seems like I am able to jump straight upwards and then I have to really yank it completely to the right for it to work. Anyone ever encounter this problem? Any ideas? Do I have to sell it on ebay (broken for parts) and buy a new one? I have never opened my unit up before. Also, what are the tiny switches at the top? What do they do? thx
Sounds like either one or more of the microswitches have gone bad on your joystick, or your joystick is in dire need of a clean and rebuild. Best case scenario, you just need to clean the microswitches (removing debris from the actuator opening). Worst case scenario, you’ll need to replace the microswitch(es). Based on what I’ve read here, I’m assuming you might not be the most handy with a soldering iron, so I recommend replacing the TP-MA assembly (if required).
- Read THIS page.
- Watch THIS video.
- Remove the TP-MA assembly and clean the area around the opening to the microswitch actuators (the red part) and the actuators themselves with rubbing alcohol (I’m talking the 91% and up kind of stuff) with a lint-free/microfiber cloth. Then press the actuators with your fingers to prime the alcohol to remove internal debris.
- If 3 doesn’t solve the issue, just buy and install a new TP-MA assembly: HERE, or HERE.
- If 4 is still too much to ask, then buy a new JLF joystick.
DO NOT ditch your entire stick.
For the tiny toggle switches up top, read THIS or THIS.

Please ask questions like this in THIS THREAD from now on. Thanks.
Wow, thank you so much for the quick and in-depth answer. I will give it a go. Very sorry I did not ask in the Question thread picard face palm.
EDIT: Looks like it is working just fine now after cleaning it. Thank you so much!
No worries. Glad to help. Take a look at the joystick shaft actuator to see if it has been chewed up with use.
Key thing to check for is a grove or notches that have formed from repetitive contact with the restrictor gate and microswitches. I’m not sure how long you’ve had your stick in use, but if its got a lot of mileage–it might be a good time to change that (and the tension spring as well).
Also look for plastic dust.
