My highlight of the Skullgirls tourney at SCR:

(Yes that’s Mike Z)
I didn’t know developing fighting games gave you toned arms.
They allow for real Soviet damage.
Nice sweater btw <3
Apropos of nothing, that’s a bitchin shirt Mike Z has on.
Had lots of fun, hope to do it again soon ^w^
Grand Finals in hella HD, watch it in the H-est D you can:

Jake - it’s a shirt.woot from loooong ago.
Man, I’ve never had D so H before.
This D is now the new standard.
You lost!?!?!?!? WTFFFF
That was an awesome tourney with hype finals! It was fun meeting some of you guys and playing lots of casuals, especially that set of ~60 games with sweaterbee lol
So here’s something I don’t get, the people that make these events (level-up… Valle) say skullgirls is dead. They don’t show give us a helping hand and when we do show up and make a bad ass tourney with so much hype how will they see it if they throw us in a different room far from spectators or main event streams. We showed up had an awesome tourney but how will they know of they don’t even poke their heads in to see what’s up with skullgirls. I hope they noticed because its BS if they continue the Skullgirls has no following trend.
If someone has a nice camera, get them to take footage of the crowd/players at the next tourney. That way if there’s hype it’s recorded and shared.
SCR was one tourney, located in the only place in the world with an active SG scene. It will take more than that one tournament to convince people that the game has support from its community. Valle was pretty much spot on.
I regret nothing.
That was a pretty damn good weekend! Big thanks to everyone that came out, that watched, donated, supported, whatever! Extra applause for the UCI staff for being generous hosts and making sure we were taken care of. Hope we can do this again some time.
The community is spread thin, but I’m not sure Valle was right…I think it’s more like the SG community doesn’t have support from the overall fighting game community. (That’s nothing new, it’s mostly a Capcommunity as much as people would deny otherwise. Witness GG, MB, and even 3s for a while. It can be overcome, or it can overcome the fans - it’s up to the fans which way that goes.)
There was an SG tourney at Frosty Faustings, they streamed Grand Finals, Duckator won. SG had the 2nd largest side-tourney at Evo. People from everywhere watch Salty Cupcakes, which has more weekly attendees than the non-Capcom games at Wednesday Night Fights get on average. People play online, and when an event was actually organized people I’d never even SEEN before showed up. SG even has the 2nd most money in the Evo contest*, and none of it is from me. :^)
Top players, especially sponsored ones, are motivated by money (shocker!) and there’s no money in SG - I’ve had lots of them tell me they enjoy it but won’t play it when they can make so much more playing MvC3. It’s not greed, it’s necessity, but when I ask them to join the tournament the first question is “What’s the pot bonus?”
Lots of other people are motivated by top players’ choices. Organizations like LevelUp are eventually motivated by top players’ choices because people want to watch top players and the more people that watch/enter the more money LevelUp makes. (Valle was very helpful to us early on, before there was a clear indication of acceptance or not.)
The circle of life - no money in it so top players skip it so people skip it so nobody puts money into it so top players skip it…as long as the perception is that nobody’s playing it, people won’t try it.
There was this art, which I think is correct for Smash (Nintendo isn’t going to care if it gets into Evo because the FGC is a small percentage of overall sales) but isn’t correct for SG. If SG got into Evo, there would be some money in it, which is what can break the circle, at least for that part.
I see, the more you know. I hear you on top player choices motivating people, can’t even get dudes to try games out here if there’s not a top player name to attach to it. Pretty crazy, imo.
Welcome to Poverty, enjoy your stay.
Cause someone asked them on the stream that day: here’s the matches 301-302 with the MsFortune Mix-ups. Is MikeZ’s toaster quality, but it saves you the digging on the twitch channel
