So Time Warner employs a technology called packet shaping:
that will put less priority on data of a gaming nature when their lines are under heavy stress. Time Warner won’t tell you this obviously. If you call them about slow gaming, they’ll just have you go to random XYZ speed test and what do you know? Perfect speeds so it must be your xbox live network! Clever tricks.
What this means is that during peak usage times, you’ll notice a decrease in anything that Time Warner deems “superfluous use.” If you torrent stuff, and your speeds are all shitty, and then you use your torrent client to encrypt the data, and your speeds increase, you’re getting that packet shaping goodness.
Anyways, Cox doesn’t use it just yet so I’ve been fine with them down here in Irvine. But once someone in my tech circle tells me they switched, well, I’ll have to start looking for another provider also. =/
i would like to fios if it ever drops to ~30 a month. for now i’m just using my treo with hacked internet, gets me about 255 kb so i’m aight with dl’s, downside is it only gives internet to my pc.
Just got Verizon High Speed Internet 3mb down/700kbs up. Huge improvement with online Street Fighter. No more lagginess and random play. Gonna cancel Time Warner today, thanks for the input everyone.
That’s why I changed to Verizon over the weekend. I’m unable to cancel my internet service with Time Warner right now because of the Holiday, they say to call back on Monday for Disconnect or Retention services. If I wanted to add stuff or open a new account with them…they’ll be able to transfer me to someone who can help. LOL
I don’t know how I stuck with Time Warner for so long given the poor connections. I’m giong to leave the poll open so others can get a feel for what people are using in the Socal area.
you can always file a complain on them with the better business bureau.

i used to work for comcast. i know it’s not down there, but i know from working there i’ll never have DSL, and i believe even though i HATE Fios if i had your options i’d go with Fios but after you sign up IMMEDIATLY call and put yourself on a do not call list.
