So why isn't Melee considered a fighting game exactly?

But if the arguments are shit then why do the smashers even care? The average SRK user knows jack shit about fighting games, ironically enough. So, why should smashers care about SRK’s opinions again? These threads are pointless.

Masahiro Sakurai even says it’s a party game.

“But really, my vision of Smash Bros. is that it’s a party game, really. You’ve got four people battling it out and you’re really not sure who’s winning or losing.”

It’s a party game just like SFxT meant to be.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that a lot of members carry a lot of hostility towards Smash in general, which is quite petulant. I remember back when I was a hardcore Melee player (see username) and I never looked at other competitive games with even half as much disdain as this community seems to with Smash. Sure, there is a…certain element to the community that might be less than desirable to associate oneself with, but the same is true of every online community.

I’m okay with being hostile if it’s justified. But it never is. I think I’ve seen one decent argument on these boards as to why it is not a fighting game.

You know you’re new when you wait for the developer to tell you how you should play a game.

To sum my posts up, SB isnt a fighter because:
-Mariokart isnt a racer even after removal of items
-Resident Evil isnt a shooter even after removal of zombies
-Pinokkio isnt a real boy even if he walks talks and acts like one.
