So why isn't Melee considered a fighting game exactly?

No the point is no one wants gems included and wants them removed entirely.

Wha? Hey, wait a second here…

Isn’t that the same as people wanting items banned in Smash and removed entirely?

And if it isn’t, please explain why not.

I’ve never considered Smash to be a true fighting game. I’ve tried to get into every version of it, and I just can’t do it. It doesn’t behave like a traditional fighter at all. It’s more like Mario Kart without the karts and racing. That’s not to say it’s not fun, but it’s more of a party game than something like SF.

Now, my friend was real big into the scene with Melee. He used to tell me how deep the system was and everything, but I still couldn’t get into it. It was just too simple for me to care lol.

the main purpose of a round in smash is to either knock the opponent down, or send them flying.
If this condition isnt met, then we can be fighting for the whole round and the match will never end.
That’s the main reason why smash is not a fighting game.

Each match has a timer. No game would last forever.

You are going to have to quote the topics of people wanting them removed entirely.
I will never go back to the smash boards again.
That shit is worse then Sherdog.

If the time ends, it goes into sudden death, and if the condition is still not met, the match still won’t end, at best it would end in a draw.

Yes those are obiviously the only reasons I stated for not acknowledging SB as a fighting game. Its not mostly because you rip out the very soul of the game to use the empty shell to your own image.

Im sure you think that Pinokkio is a real boy too.

This is a next to impossible scenario considering the Bob-Omb rain that starts after a while in Sudden Death.

I come from the smash community, its a party game that had to have rules changed to make it competitive. Doesnt really matter if its a fighter or not in anyones eyes, its still a competitive game. People can hate all they want but melee is not easy to play high level, I hate when people say its a childs game…brawl is

Wait, isn’t it obvious? o_O

No competitive player would want items on. It has already been established for all 3 games. Actually, I see more people being receptive to the gem system (well, at least they would be outside the DLC/pre-order gems).

Uh, no. The winner is the person with the most stocks (or lower percentage, if the stocks are the same for both players). Sudden death is never played.

Perhaps you should review the rulesets for the games.

i have a better question
why the smash players dont play other games that are in the same vein of their beloved smash?

Its also unlikely that an entire match goes by without anyone knocking down the other.
My point is that this difference makes the game completely different, and act in totally different principles than a fighting game.
Therefore the game is not part of the genre.

I have all respect for Smash players, as the game does require skill, and it is competitive, but its foundation is other than fighting games.
It you don’t believe me, just look at our communities.
I know there’s people that are members of both, but I’m talking about the type of environment on a FGC event, compared to a Smash-only one.

I wouldn’t be able to tell you what genre smash is because I’m not educated in anything but fighting games.

Really? They are pretty identical in terms of environment. What exactly are you referring to here?

My advice is to leave the thread behind and never look back. The flames are going to keep burning here for a while.

I do wonder this as well. There has been a few, I think. They all failed to gain an audience. If Smash didn’t have Nintendo characters, would it have even a fraction of the player base?
I don’t harbor any ill will towards Smashers, but I think it’s a shame they don’t support their genre of pseudo-fighters and instead cling to an old game exclusively.

I don’t really like the physics in Smash. And the analog inputs (movement, shield), drives me nuts.

Alot do

The reason this thread comes up again and again is because the arguments against Smash not being a fighting game are poorly done.

Like?

I can’t think of any smash-like game that has a competitive scene. Maybe some Naruto game?

Oh my bad I misread your post, thought you were saying Smash players don’t play anything that’s not Smash.
