So......people playing fighting games with Keyboards....WTF guys!

I use the arrow keys for movements and ASDZXC for the attacks when I play most games on keyboard .

scrubs…

y so mad? Guess u didnt get your daily dose of Yoohoo

I just skimed through a bit of the posts and that was the only thing that came to mind. Are you mad?

I think that a custom built keystick is probably the optimum input method for video games in general.

There are a couple hurdles though:

  • you will have to relearn how to use the controller. For adults who are past their learning phase this will be something that is probably impossible. It would take at least several years before your brain reorganizes itself to the device and muscle memory develops.

  • you will handicap yourself when it comes time to play on any other type of input device. Pretty much all joypads and joysticks are similar and you can adapt between the two pretty easily. I think not so much for the keystick to joystick transition.

But theoretically it seems like if you could use all ten fingers on a joystick then all directions and buttons would be pretty much equal and many things like tiger knees, instant air dashes, standing 720s, pretzels, raising storms, and other difficult difficult motions would be barely more difficult than typing this paragraph.

One of the advantages of a keyboard I have not seen mentioned is the absolute nature of it’s input. When you press the down arrow and the right arrow you absolutely know you will get a down/right. This is not so true with a joystick. Many players complain that they have trouble finding corners on competion joysticks, and finding cardinal directions on square gate gates. But for a keyboard user this is no matter.

I too think we will begin to see a minority population of keystick users at tournaments. I would not be surprised at all if there weren’t tournaments going on in South America and China right now that were being played on emulators and keyboards. In those places keyboards are the original input method and playing on a joystick or joypad would seem unnecessarily complex.

Did you guys know that in Mexico many cabinets have the joystick on the right hand side? Go to a local arcade sometime that you know many Mexicans frequent. I guaranteee you will see some of them playing cross-handed.

Ironically, when I play on a keyboard I play cross-handed, with my left hand going over my right hand on the arrow keys and my right hand on ASD and ZXC. My brain is so fucked up these days because of this that I can’t even reassign the keys and uncross, it’s permanently hardwired to expect it

Oh, and to the OP and anybody else who criticizes one input method over the other. Fuck you and fuck off. SF is a world phenomenon and I personally welcome and celebrate the fact that there are so many different communities that play it in so many different ways. If you think keyboards are “blasphemous” then you are just a bigot.

You make too many assumptions, it would not be too hard for an adult to learn, lol wtf are we talking about 90 year war vets or something. No. We talking about gamers, all it takes is repetition, you do something over and over for long enough it will stick (no pun intended). If you can touchtype you should not have problem learning how to use keyboard or keystick control method, again its just a matter of getting the timing down and repetition.

I hate people that cross there arms no wonder you are messed up j/k. People that are right handed should be controlling the movement with their left hand, your left can’t be that uncoordinated :clown: But seriously, you do need to strengthen then muscles in your left hand otherwise you will be slow, clumpsy and fatigue easily.

I wonder how many people on pad switch the thumbs sticks, I was thinking about doing that for Halo3, because trying to fire a sniper rifle accurately with the same hand that you use to aim doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Naturally when you move one of your digits it will also have an effect on the other muscles in your hand (usually causing a small degree of contraction), so my theory is that to remove all tension you would have to use the trigger on opposite hand and the aiming on the other.

I believe that you would still never reach the same level of proficiency with a secondary control method if you learned your primary one during your learning phase as a child or teenager. Using a joypad is pretty much an extension of my hands. I don’t even think about it. I’ve been using keyboards and joysticks for years now, but I still have to think. I’m better on an arcade stick though, so maybe thinking isn’t so bad.

Maybe you misread me but I do use my left hand for movement. My left hand crosses over my right hand to access the arrow keys and my right hand pushes the attack buttons on asd and zxc. I am right handed.

This goes way back to SNES Street Fighter II. I never understood how people could play with the L button. My best friend could reversal DP all the time with fierce set to L. I always struggled to find a proper layout until I just said fuck it and bought a six button controller. When we get together to play now though he still sets his sixaxis to the old SNES default:xeye:

If I get bored in college, I have MAME and SNES9x on my external hard drive, so I play sf2, sf alpha 3, MVC etc with keyboard… It’s not that hard, just gotta get used to it. I can play fairly decent, nothing special though lol

Type Fighter II Turbo

I see what you are saying, I would suggest changing your keyboard layout.
movement WASD, attacks YUI,GHJ(my personal preferance) or using the directional keys for movement and the numpad 789,456 for attacks.

The funniest thing about this thread is that despite VRyo’s stances on anti-cheating, he used to use (and possibly still uses) autofire back in the days of kaillera. I remember he admitted it, claiming Ryo’s one frame links were too hard without it.

Awesome.

Talk about irony. I wonder how he’ll explain this? :coffee:

Oh shit

lol, from going to a high school that allowed laptops, I can safely say that you will play with ANYTHING that allows you to get away with it during class. Heck, we used to sit in the back of the room in our AP Government class and play Halo pc on the wireless network every single day.

As far as how “good” keyboards work for fighters, I will say that I played quite a bit of mame on my laptop at school and the keyboard never got me down.

EDIT: (sadly, i’m done and graduated from HS and college)

Um, no, that was when I forgot to turn off autoguard after a practice session trying an unknown at the time combo" Ryo’s extra down C finisher in corner because it is hard to connect and you know it. It was a one time occurence and you and someone else caught it right away. “Ryo’s one frame links were too hard to hard to hit without it”?? Why would I say this when characters have one frame links, why even bother playing KOF then if I wantd to cheat one frame links. Please don’t manipulate what happened.

lol @ “possibly still uses”. You know I turned that it off when it was brought to my attention right away. Theres nothing as lousy as winning with a cheap advantage.

Again to be clear, it might not be cheating (used too strong a word before I guess )but the speed effeciency, shortcuts, and accuracy of keyboards in my book are unfair advantages.

What’s the big deal about Keyboards ?

There were people on the Evo stream playing with Keyboard box thingies.

Hell i even did it on GGPO for months.

It’s just another controller.

And this…is what scares me.

People not accepting a new generation of fighting game players and how they play.

It’s called EVO for a reason.

Evolve people.

^ so true

Actually, it would be interesting to see some actual statistics and numbers on the difference between using a stick and keyboard.

With the speed of input and the right layout, I could see standing 720s and anything else that requires super quick motion working easily. It will never, ever replace the standard stick, but I could see people choosing it over stick for some situations.

Of course, the other obviously plus side is that no one would ever ask to borrow your keystick!
