I am pretty sure that i can take all the options of COD and force the use of the Shield and the knife only to turn it into something similar to a FPS FG.
The argument has never been and should never be whether Smash is a fighting game or not. I have 100% respect for people who acknowledge Smashes depth but don’t think it’s a fighter, because fighter is such a subjective definition that telling someone they are wrong for saying Smash is not a fighter is ridiculous. Smash is Smash. Sakurai saying it’s not a fighter isn’t something new by any means. The reason the argument became “Smash is a fighting game” instead of “Smash has depth” is because sensitive Smashers take “not a fighting game” as “has no depth” (the two aren’t always mutually exclusive). It doesn’t matter at all is Smash is a fighter or not.
reading that article shouldn’t have sent us down the “is smash a fighter” path.
what he said about
fighting games being too technical
that the era of enthusiasts being the main target audience for video games is drawing to an end
is far more interesting. it’s especially interesting to think about what he said in relation to the current trend of fighting games, as started by SF4. to me putting tripping and items in a game doesn’t seem much different than adding ultras, slowing the game down, and making the combos longer and longer. you are aiming at the lowest common denominator either way and the enthusiasts (Melee players, fans of pre-09 fighters) find that what they loved about the genre is either gone or not what they remember.
Sakurai should have kept his mouth shut as this does nothing for anyone. The average gamer doesn’t know sometimes what the hell he/she wants from their game and bitches because they can. Regardless I still firmly believe Smash has been and always will be a hybrid fighting game…not traditional at all BUT the options it provides allows it to be among many many other things. In the grand scheme of it all it among many labels we put for our games is irrelevant.
I do also agree that there’s no such thing as hardcore/casual games. They’re just games. Those labels are what exces/stupid journalists throw onto us to segregate people into believing lies. That playing something over another puts us above others in a poor effort to produce sales, cast aside the competition among companies and give shitty excuses to justify how much/little time and effort we put into a game with arbitrary numbers representing stats and in game achievements.
