A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-M.D.) had been spit on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-G.A.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a 'ni--er.' And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "f****t," as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president's speech, shrugged off the incident.

But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

"It was absolutely shocking to me," Clyburn told the Huffington Post. "Last Monday, this past Monday, I stayed home to meet on the campus of Claflin University where fifty years ago as of last Monday... I led the first demonstrations in South Carolina, the sit ins... And quite frankly I heard some things today I have not heard since that day. I heard people saying things that I have not heard since March 15, 1960 when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus."

"It doesn't make me nervous as all," the congressman said, when asked how the mob-like atmosphere made him feel. "In fact, as I said to one heckler, I am the hardest person in the world to intimidate, so they better go somewhere else."

Asked if he wanted an apology from the group of Republican lawmakers who had addressed the crowd and, in many ways, played on their worst fears of health care legislation, the Democratic Party, and the president, Clyburn replied:

"A lot of us have been saying for a long time that much of this, much of this is not about health care a all. And I think a lot of those people today demonstrated that this is not about health care... it is about trying to extend a basic fundamental right to people who are less powerful."

The majority of us aren’t poor or well to do we make just enough to buy our levi jeans, converse shoes, and big macs everyday. There is no other country that I’d rather live in. I got a good job by working hard, I have great healthcare that I PAY FOR. Seems like the big debate is EVERYONE getting healthcare at the cost of high taxes and crappier healthcare for those who already have good healthcare they pay for. I think people need to look deeper into the healthcare issue and find other causes as to why our healthcare insurance is so expensive. We don’t need healthcare reform, we need healthcare INSURANCE reform. If healthcare insurance was 40%-50% cheaper millions more people would be able to afford it without having to dole out higher taxes, and one way to approach this is by letting health insurance companies sell and do business OUTSIDE STATE LINES to generate competition(states are greedy bastards). Wrongful and ridiculous law suits by greedy idiots should be punished.

If you want an example of why the “public option” is so bad, look at programs like medicare and medicaid. They went WAAAY past the planned costs and are a very large part of the federal deficit. There are programs out there for people who have low income to get basic health insurance. You would be surprised how lazy/ignorant people are to not sign up for free programs. There is a lot of stuff I haven’t gone through, but thats the gist of my take on a major issue.

I’m not going to get into this bit with most people, and I’ll do my best to leave this open if you guys can have a somewhat civil discussion, but I think democrats want to do too much and republicans don’t want to do shit, which is why we are in this situation. I saw some stupid ass bitch from Minesota on TV the other night and they asked her if she was for health care, and she said no. So they asked her how she’d fix health care, and she said she wouldn’t. She then went on to say that if you’re really sick you can go into any hospital with an emergency room and they are required by law to help you.

That was this stupid chicken head’s idea of why America’s health system is so great.

People like her, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin are the problem. I really don’t think most of you guys on here have been seriously sick and had somebody pull the rug out from under you when it comes to your coverage. People shouldn’t have to declare bankruptcy just because they get sick, and insurance companies shouldn’t look at your health as a commodity.

Now if you don’t want to pay taxes because you don’t think little tommy should have access to health care that wont bankrupt his mom then imo move to a state that shares similar beliefs and invoke whatever states rights amendment that is. personally i havent seen any concrete evidence that the government is up to no good with health care reform and im as cynical of any government as you can rationally get, and since this thread is about health care ill stick to that because it’s probably the only thing i have nothing bad to say about the US government.
