I found this deal for this laptop, but I don’t know JACK about computers/laptops and i’m wondering how this computer ranks for gaming, and such. is this a good buy?
HP 17.3" LED Laptop PC
-AMD Turion II Dual Core Processor
-4GB DDR3 Memory
-640GB Hard Drive
-Blu-Ray Disc and DVD RW
-Fingerprint Reader
-Windows 7 Home Premium
-Beats Audio
After searching around online, I think this is the same laptop.
the video card in that lappy is low end…so depending what you plan on playing will be the deciding factor if you should get it… Games like modern warfare can only be ran on low settings with it so take that for what its worth.
I was hoping to run not too crazy games, maybe Starcraft 2, Heroes of Newerth, maybe WoW? I’m not a graphics junkie, I just want something that will run smoothly even if it is on the lowest settings.
The processor is no good?
The other good deal at costco is on a similar laptop, but the differences are:
14" screen
Intel Core i5 Processor
I’m willing to spend like up to 900$ for something that will “get the job done”, i will not be doing anything to crazy with a laptop i’m not a big “tech” person.
otherwise i5 is generally the best choice for better laptops imo.
overall you’ll be satisfied with your purchase, but your not going to get that feeling of “This was a good purchase” over the next few years. Its a laptop, the only thing they have over a desktop is their mobility (and that’s questionable with the bigger models).
i searched around costco, did not find the model you have mentioned. Though if it is not running on intel graphics, it will run the game. Just not at the settings you want it to run (or minimal settings)
dells aren’t the worst by any means… and regarding the proc… its not nearly as important as your video card. I don’t think SC2 would be playable on that… WOW would be fine though.
my personal 2 favorite laptop manufacturers for gaming are ASUS and Toshiba… I am very satisfied with the 3 laptops I have bought from them.
EDIT: I just looked at the xps 15… hard to beat that deal… if I was looking for a lappy for gaming right now I would snag one of those in its basic form with the extended battery (adds 40 bux to it) Really is a good deal and reviews are positive as well.
I had a longer post but accidentally clicked the “Reply to Thread” button…but…
That laptop you posted will definitely run SC2 and WoW on low settings. I’ve heard the slightly lower model gfx card (in the HP convertible tablet I plan to get) in the same ATI series can run SCII on med/high and have seen it play Mass Effect 2 on high (although not the best frame rate but still good). HP had a coupon code last week that brought down the HP ENVY 14in model to $850 I think, and I believe it has a better gfx card and specs than the Dell XPS (although still a good choice).
I’d say wait a bit for Black Friday/Cyber Monday (days after Thanksgiving) to get a better deal. And have you thought about size? 17in and gaming powerhouses usually aren’t very portable and have around 2-3(4?) hours of battery life. The HP ENVY and Dell XPS will probably have better battery life and mobility though. You could also get a factory refurbished ASUS on Amazon that can run some games on Ultra for $800, but I assume it’s a bulkier laptop.
Thanks for the responses guys. I’m going to have to check out that dell laptop.
I’m just in love with the price of $699 for a laptop that isn’t garbage. The screen is rather large though, and battery life is a concern of mine.
In regards to black friday, i’ve never partook in a black friday sale before.
do they actually put out quality laptops for a good price, or do they just put out the basic laptops at super low prices?
i would assume, from a business standpoint, that rather than put out semi-expensive awesome laptops, they would rather put out semi-grade laptops for an awesome price.
Thoughts? I have no problem waiting until black friday, but i just don’t want to wake up super early in the morning for garbage.
edit: Where did you find the Dell XPS 15 for $850? Searched online everywhere, couldn’t find that deal.
Engadget reviews say the XPS 14 and ENVY 14 last for around 4 hours (with the HP ENVY lasting longer I think) so I’d assume the XPS 15 will have shorter battery life unless they have bigger batteries to choose. Some of those Newegg deals do look like good deals but keep in mind they will probably be bulkier than the HP or Dell for similar spec/price. I know that ASUS ones are usually more reliable though (for past models).
I believe Cyber Monday (Monday after Thanksgiving) is starting to pick up and you’ll be able to find good deals online. Though they still might be limited. I still think they’ll provide better options and deals on such things like laptops. If they have another $400 ENVY laptops (the one they had last week), you’ll be able to customize a 14" ENVY with better overall spec (and IMO form factor) than the Dell. But if they don’t, I’d go with the Dell.
I think both Dell and HP have lower end models that can just play things at low/med setting, but have better battery, are smaller, and cheaper. I think HP’s dm4t series and Dell’s Inspiron might fit the description.
I’m not really a graphics junkie and I would be satisfied with something that runs high grade games on low/medium settings for a cheaper price, most definitely.
I bought a i7 with a geforce 310m, and it runs sc2 on low settings very good. (720 P)
it also is able to run final fantasy 14 online (its slow, but playable around 20 fps)
price 799 at frys.
If i could choose better, i would have downgraded the proc to a i5 (or amd dual core), and got a better video card.
Imo doesnt matter if you use amd or intel.
id wait for the thanksgiving sales to pick up a good latop.
The HP tm4t seems great if you want something smaller…there was a $250 coupon that just expired hours ago so if you configured it right (choosing between faster processor or more GFX card ram to make original price $1099) the price would come to $679 before tax. It kind of depends on the deals going on at the time of purchase and what you’re looking for. It’s possible that more powerful notebooks like the ENVY or XPS are almost as cheap as lower end laptops, but they aren’t as portable.
I haven’t looked at the best options for the thinnest, lightest laptops but the dm4t seems like a good candidate. If you want something more powerful but not too big, go with the already suggested laptops. Right after Thanksgiving should theoretically have the best deals though.
This laptop can play most games out there on mid-high settings. The quad-core processor gets the job done with other things as well ( such as photoshop and multitasking ).
I of course, own it…
I can play steam games like Left4Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 on HIGH/MAX settings without any problems at all. The quad core also allows me to play Just Cause 2 at low-mid settings. I’m sure that the games you mentioned can be played on high without any problems. I invested in a cooling pad ( this one specifically : Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Notebook Cooler Model NotePal U3 R9-NBC-8PCK-GP ) so that I don’t risk overheating.
Like others stated, I’d wait for CyberMonday/BlackFriday… otherwise, there are tons of good deals out there for less than $800.
