because kof sucks.
Fucking Drew Loken is waiting for Kof at evo then he will take all your money, doesn’t matter what country you came here on a boat from DREW LOKEN WILL TAKE YOUR FUCKING MONEY!
I’d probably go with the many releases. I’m hoping now it’ll be different since SNKP has taken the year number off KoF. So now maybe people can actually go in depth with the game (like CvS2) and bring the game up. If not…just fly to an Asian country or Mexico because damn…they sure love KoF. Oh…and NeoWave is in SBO3.
I’m quite aware that two KoF games 9 years apart play differently, thank you.
What I meant by the comment was that the overall feel of the game hasn’t really changed. CFJ’s hitstuns and blockstuns don’t feel like A3 or CvS2, and neither of them feel like ST. There’s different types of responsiveness. I pick up 98 and play Kyo, he’s not really that different from 2K2 Kyo (yes, I know he’s got new moves, thanks). 2K3 was really the first step in a truly different direction because the controls felt closer to SF2 timing than traditional KoF timing where you had a much wider window in which to execute commands.
By the way, I still think 2K3 sucks. Sorry.
NeoWave actually looks to be an interesting since it takes a pretty well-established iteration of the KoF engine, a bunch of well-liked characters, and actually adds some options to the meta-engine that gives it a chance at variation.
I don’t think it’s so much “Capcom got the US locked down with SF2” so much as “SNK’s had issues with their marketing and hardware and thus lost to Capcom’s strong, but dated standing in the fighting game market”. There’s certainly not a lot of love for Capcom going around these days, and yet people still ignore KoF and go play CFE. I mean, wtf?
(Not that I’m bashing either KoF or CFE, I play both. I just don’t understand the logic at work with some people here.)
SNK has always been repped in the big JPN tournies, with at LEAST one game in there. Last SBO we had SS5 and KOF2k3. This year we have KOF:NW, and IIRC SS5:S.
SS5S is an awesome game and more people need to play it, dammit.
I played…and got beat…at a KOF2003 tourney a couple weeks ago when it was part of an arcade tourney! ^^ Well, it now seems that KOF tourneys around the US seem to be either scarce or growing. So if ya want to see more KOF tourneys, you either look for them or hold one! ^^
how is the balance on that anyway?
A lot of the issues have been resolved in SSV:S previous infinites are gone and the oldman can no longer fly forever. Mina is still Mina for the most part but honestly despite what the average non SSVS player thinks she never was a dominant force to begin with. Most of the characters can be played with competitively, even the low tiers can compete although they do take a lot more work.
I haven’t played it competitively enough to speak from personal experience, but from what I’ve seen of it it’s very playable, if not somewhat slower-paced than traditional 2D stuff. Enlightenment cheese isn’t nearly as bad as it was in SS5, Yoshitora was toned down, etc. etc. There seemed to be a lot of variety in characters when I saw match vids of it.
ive watched a LOT of kof 2k2 played at the highest level and ill tell you now there is a LOT of positioning and mind games, it also looks a lot more fluid and intense than something like say cfj (which im not bashing as i love it and play it everyday in the cades here).
its just that whenever snk people in america are called to the challenge of being able to come together and have decent sized regular tournaments, they never show up.
^_^, Jason’s gonna be on it again hehe, though I hear you bro. Japan loves KoF though, so why not hold one since R.F plays it :bgrin: (I did see him beast during the casuals, but I didn’t know there was a tourney during Evo that was held which I could’ve contributed for the cause).

Very True, but to a point…94-95 look like shit compared to kof now, but even in 94 vs SS2T KOF still looked better. KOF2k2 > CFJ/E true. KOF2003 I refuse to play. Its on the SVC engine (jumps are heavier, and say bye bye to buffering), among other things, and they took away the MAX system (which is the only reason Ill play SvC for 3 mins) but hell its not KOF2k2 or 98 so I just wont play.
If someone took the time to note the differences between any sf (with the exception of 3’s) KOF beats it everytime, except with popularity. I consider myself a SNKer by heart, but noone hear plays these games, so I play Capcom Titles.
As much as we want it @ Evo the SNK usa scene isnt dedicated or big enough, so…it will never be.
 Neowave should be great to watch…Max2 Mode AOF Team all the way!
Tizoc owns Duo for free.
As much as we want it @ Evo the SNK usa scene isnt dedicated or big enough, so…it will never be.
Dedication is what it lacks. people from east coast are willing to travel to cali for MvC and 3S but people from South cali wont travel to evo for SNK… they all go to mexico for bad ass SNk tournies…
to me it depends on where you from. SA tx, when we have tournies with good prizes we get atleast 22+.
Bingo. No competetive scene will ever grow if it is run by lazy-close minded people that never want to change. As harsh and exagerated as that statement is, it’s unfortunately mostly true.
It’s big in Korea as well
This thread comes up once every year, shit is never resolved. Wanna read last years thread? (it’s closed now.)

I’m not holding my breath regarding any kind of competitive SNK scene since the players all over are just simply not interested in holding any kind of tournament, just casual. Even when tourneys are held in the USA, scarce as they are, they have a very small turnout or the level of comp isnt high (because noone knows how to get in touch with the superfobs to spread the word out, if they have any.) Of course, the level of comp is secondary though, first step is to actually get a player base that’s willing to play, and the SNK community has shown time and time again (aside from JPN/Korea/etc etc) that they’re not willing to do that.
That said, KOF Neowave is the hotness. Are there any other arcades in the USA that have it other than Chinatown Fair? It’s up there with the top 3 KOF’s IMO, those being 98/2k2/NW in no particular order. I really like NW but I’m a bit turned off by a few things, like King’s ridiculous supercancels she can do now off her command throw, among other things…but theres always cheap shit in fighting games. Dunno how AOF2 Geese changes the game as we haven’t unlocked the DIP switches to enable him yet, alot of ppl say he’s broken or near the top.
Near top, Art. He gets predictable REAL fast, and the lack of the CPU unblockable Deadly Rave hurts him DM-wise. He needs momentum most of all, once he lets up, everything else he does takes a bit before the hit frames appear. Once they’re there, though…Meaty as fuck.
