So Cal Players

I hear from UltraChen tv about the 3S scene there with guys who refuse to play console tournaments so I havent seen any footage besides one Gootecks video. Do you guys do any streaming? Wheres a good youtube channel to follow you guys? Any really good old school footage out there?

Wish you could travel and play us in Austin, theres 3 really really awesome players here.

Super Arcade was streaming tournaments earlier this year. I think the archives are up. But yeah, nobody who is good fucks with console in Socal, at least not seriously. Dude there’s tons of good old socal footage.

The Cross Counter youtube channel has some old FFA Ranking Battles.

Thanks! I hope one day Capcom will release an arcade perfect port of 3rd Strike, probably wont be till PS4.

arcade perfect port is impossible :frowning:

I was just at super arcade playing arcade 3s last night. It was fun.

Awe dont say that, itll happen.

I’m 99% certain it’s impossible. arcade speed is dependent on arcade hardware.

They just have to make a really good emulator for CPS3 with proper clock speed to handle the game, itll be possible one day, especially on PC. They could maybe follow other fighting game companies and put 3rd Strike on Steam.

arcade perfect port of 3s is technically possible but realistically I don’t think it’s going to happen. you’d need cycle accurate emulation of the hardware with good documentation of the hardware details available, and no input lag added through emulation.

there’s a guy who was working on making cycle accurate emulation for the SNES, and it took him several years. that’s for much simpler hardware, and a console a lot more people played so there were more playtesters and enthusiasts with flash carts to compare. there were guys who after an important release would play through the entire SNES library for a certain amount of time and make sure nothing was broken. you can have that kind of support when you’re trying to accurately emulate a really popular console. CPS3 equivalent would have a much smaller base of people who only want to play 1-2 games. also a relatively small chunk of 3s fans outside Japan have actually played the game on real hardware. so you’re going to have a lot of false positives during the testing process too. like for example Ken target combo SA3 has a different timing on GGPO vs OE vs CPS3. I couldn’t target combo SA3 for my first 2-3 days after switching. so it would feel wrong to anyone who hasn’t spent a lot of time on the real thing and the amount of people you can draw on for help is really small.

it would be really cool if someone did that though. just not holding my breath. I don’t think it will be Capcom all things considered.

i don’t think it is technically possible.

hardware is hardware. you can try to emulate that hardware via software but right there you just made an enormous jump.
we can still play decent versions of the game on different systems but it’s never going to be like cps3. just close enough that it isn’t a massive headache (except online when you add latency)

I’m glad you’re enlightened now bob. You quickly realize how they intended the game to move/flow. So much time to confirm things, to react to stuff, to cancel, etc. And that’s just from emulation to cps3. When you add latency to emulation… It’s a world of difference.

Do you have an rgb setup? rgb tvs are kind of hard to find/expensive but totally worth it to see what the game was meant to look like. it is hella crisp, smooth and super vibrant, almost pulsing. you notice details on the stages that are dull or even blurry on various ports/emu. like on remy’s stage the skulls look like they’re made out of some kind of crazy stone with bits of diamond in it. they sparkle and shit. or elena’s stage, the way the light twinkles through the the acacia trees in the background.

it’s really stunning, i can only imagine the SF3 series was pretty mind-blowing visually when it came out in Japan.

Well if anyone does it and can do the game justice, then it should be Capcom and not a fan programmer since theyd have the most resources. This is depressing me a little. Thanks for all the feedback.

we don’t have an RGB setup yet but it’s in the plans. I think I’ve seen a couple websites selling the monitors, but I need to figure out how to build a casing to hold the screen.

yeah I agree with everything you said with CPS3 vs everything else. I haven’t really said anything since it seemed like I might be stirring the pot for no reason, but IMO neither FBA or OE are really close to CPS3. I’m not saying they’re ridiculously far off or anything but I think it’s far enough that it messes with the game flow and decision making for everyone involved. when OE came out and I was first learning the game, I was really clinging to what several people here said about “OE is the closest to arcade” since I didn’t really want to spend more money. now that I have though, I’m not sure OE is a great substitute for the real thing.

really influences the players too. I remember someone saying a couple months ago “you can tell when you’re playing them who learned this game offline and who learned it online.” I have a suspicion this is true to a smaller degree for the console ports too.

playing on CPS3 really is a “seeing the light” kind of moment. things that eluded you all suddenly fall into place.

@igloobob

I personally think the difference between learning on console and arcade is definitely smaller.

Something’s that come to mind are the height of the stick and view of the monitor. in my experience, the sense of space feels different. it’s probably because it’s easier to stare at one part of the screen and miss the big picture on arcade compared to when you’re playing on a tv monitor where you get a view of the whole screen with ease. I have to consciously get use to shifting my eyes more to different areas of the monitor to look at gauge, hp bar, etc.

Other than that I’m not sure how much things like game speed make a difference in terms of learning the game. I do remember sometimes feeling like I had to slow certain things down on arcade than what I’m use to.
