Sneaker Ninjas Unite! - The Guy matchup thread

Fantastic work. Thanks.

I’m really starting to see a pattern here with Guy. Charge characters (minus blanka) are huge headaches and it’s all almost due to one move in their arsenal.

-Balrog, lp dash straight… can’t do anything if you block one except keep blocking and try to react to a throw
-Bison, lk scissor… Same issue as above
-Honda, Lp.headbutt although honda isn’t nearly as bad as balrog/bison, it’s still a pain to fight against
-Guile, sonic boom zoning traps… I’m getting better mixing their defense up with this one, but it’s still an uphill battle.

Anyway, I’m going to start streaming random battles again on endless here:

Feel free to tune in and give tips and or learn something maybe.

Her AAs are likely more then sufficient to stuff Guy if the Ibuki isn’t taking a nap. Her DP (or I guess really DK in her case) seems a little prone to trading from my experiences, but her b+MP can get the job done pretty well.

My main issue playing against friends Ibuki’s is getting caught in her vortex without meter, it can be a rough situation to get out of there without a EX BSK available, though that of course comes with all the usual risks of using that move since you’re vulnerable when it doesn’t connect.

Alright, some details about the Guy vs. Adon match-up I picked up from yesterday’s tourney.

Against Jaguar Tooth, s.HK will beat it clean if timed properly; sometimes it trades, though. c.HP is much more consistent in completely beating it out. Just throw out c.HP every time you see Adon leap to the wall, and if he does the HK version you’ll smack him out of it every time. This will condition a smart Adon player to never use Jaguar Tooth again. If he does, he’s probably trying to do a LK version to bait something less safe; if does this too much, punish it with Run-Slide. Then he’ll REALLY never use Jaguar Tooth again, unless it’s an EX. You have to use EX BSK to beat EX Jaguar Tooth. Jaguar Tooth spammers are free for Guy.

The real problem comes from his poking game; you can’t focus attack against an Adon who doesn’t jump around a whole lot, as his s.HK eats them. More than likely, he’s going to try to use Jaguar Kick to pressure you and go for a lot of throws, as really his options outside of that are limited and his throw range is ridiculous. Get good at distinguishing the difference between ground-based and air-based Jaguar Kicks; the air-based ones can be focused. If he tries to pressure you with instant air Jaguar Kicks, deliver a focus combo of your choice to make sure he thinks twice. Nothing Adon can do against Guy is free; let him know that. Other than that, just try to bait Rising Jaguars and punish him hard. Bushin Flip works well on Adon if used sparingly; one Izuna Drop will allow you to put pressure on him, and the only way he has out of that is Rising Jaguar.

With all this set aside, I think this match-up is dead even. If both of you are good at throw teching, this is going to be a long fight. Don’t be surprised if you have to take a win by life lead.

I’ve done some testing for guy’s safe jump setup and found the results.

The safe jump in question is run->slide hit, instant neutral jump, hk

First, the does not works:
shotos (ryu, ken, akuma) - reversal srk startup is too fast
cammy, sagat - hk whiffs due to their hitbox… makes the setup pointless

Works on(even ex):
Guile flash kick
Blanka diagonal ball
Viper upper electric
Sakura SRK
Seth SRK
Feilong Flamekick
Rufus JesusKick
ChunLi Ex Helicopter
Dudley Jet upper
Balrog Headbutt
T.Hawk SRK

Untested but probably works:
Juri ex wheel
Vega flip
Deejay upkicks

.
I’m sad to say this easy setup (relatively…) doesn’t work on the whole cast… I’m especially bummed about it not working on Sagat. Anyway, it’s more info in our database.

Not sure if I got lucky or not, but U1 gives you just enough invincibility to avoid a Tostada Press in front of you. The first punch will wiff but the second hits.

Also, c.MK goes under even the lowest instant air JK, and timed appropriately scores an untechable KD.

Definitely a great video. Thanks for this!

In the Zangief, Hawk and Hakan matchups, df+HK is not a bad poke to throw out there (don’t whiff). It hits their fat hitboxes from a pretty long way, backs you off, and on block is safe from reversal green hands, EX Spires, and slides (oily or otherwise). Don’t do it with your back to a corner, though, b/c then you’ll recover close enough for some normals to hit.

i am surprised i haven’t seem much people talking about Guy vs Gouken. It is a very fun match i don’t know what to compare it with yet but it is a fun and tense like ryu vs sagat or ryu vs Sim. In some of the things that were happening since gouken can hadoken in three directions and he can keep guy from the sky, Guy does have his run slide to get in close, and even if you do the gouken player i was playing used his counters alot and thats just what guy needs to combo from.

Gouken’s regular hadoken can give you time to izuna in and from what i have done keeping the mixups wild and spontaneous and throwing can lessen the reaction of Gouken’s counters. since guy is so fast in this match compared to gouken thats what Guy relies on a bit, however goukens zoning and damage are pretty high to the point where we can say this match up is.

Speed Mixups vs Power Zoning(yes i said it.)

pretty sure other people have more insightful things to say about this match up but trust me its really fun

vs Honda is ass ugly. j.Elbow can stop HBs cold and you can punish HP HBs with run slide. Other than that Guy has shit he can do in this matchup. Crossups can work but autocorrect EX HBs stuff you cold.
Stand fierce can also stop HBs but the timing is strict and the risk of trading isnt in your favor.

Anyone have anything else let it be known because I sure dont.

…ex hozanto can punish ex HB…I think >_>

EDIT: Actually no, it doesn’t -__-

2ND EDIT: BUT MK or HK TATSU BEATS IT! Just put it out there on the EX startup. Also, I can only seem to do it from fullscreen.

Against blanka if you get hit with a ball, run > flip overhead and it seems to be hitting every single blanka I’ve fought.

Run slide is still the best option against blocked, obviously.

here’s a tip against ibuki: when she does the command forward dash and ends up on the other side she can get thrown. This was good for starting guy’s mixup cuz it sets you at perfect distance for lp bushin flip or j.mk. Also i love hearing the xbl chat go nuts with disbelief over what just happened. haha

are there any tips for Guy vs. characters with quick pokes?

i’ve been having problems with Vega and Chun-Li…

also, did Vega get a huge buff or something? cuz i’m having major issues against him even with my Chun-Li…

For the E.Honda Matchup. Im not sure if this will be useful or not, But I fought an E.Honda today. I Run-Slide underneath of his headbutt. I Lol’d because i did it by accident. Maybe this could prove to be useful. Anyone ever done this? And if its been discussed,my bad.

I don’t think it can be done on reaction, unless cr.hk works. Still if you have time to do that it might be bettter just to jab it or stop it some other way, I don’t know

A slightly differently timed elbow beats all butt splashes except maybe ex, and he can punish any butt splash on block with u2. The match doesn’t seem that bad for Guy.

I think jumping FP trades with hondas air normals for the most part too

This… anyone found out?

The best I’ve come up with is… stay out of jab range and poke back with s.mp. It’s a bit difficult to do since if you do s.mp and walk forward to do another, you might get overhead if you don’t neutral in time… but it works for the most part. Staying just outside of cody’s jab range really messes with his game.
