-Even if a million Japanese people have taken some kind of vow of celibacy, that would be a fraction of a percentage of the total population.
-*Lots of rich, developed countries with high standards of living and high costs of living have declining birth rates, they rely on immigrants to keep the population stable. Japan is not immigrant friendly. *
-Even if it is the case that a combination of long work days, conservative values, changing family models and etiquette guidelines that look down on being open and forthcoming with your desires, in addition to a massive industry of easily consumable, instant gratification media such as anime, video games, the internet…people are still going to fuck.
-Everybody is an expert on Japan, and even the people who talk shit and make broad, sweeping statements about a huge number of people seem to have a Japan fetish. Like, if the article was about the Polish birth rate declining, or Jordanian teens are having less sex, nobody would give a shit.

This also has to do with the how active women are in the workforce and how educated a woman can become within society. Women who live in societies where they can work as much as they want and get as educated as they want generally want fewer children.

Challenging societal pressure/gender expectations of bearing/fathering and raising offspring would be great… if there was something in place to avail humans of that really basic necessity for survival. Like plucking eggs and sperm to incubate in artificial wombs, and let them get raised by robot parents, or other science fiction pulp. But it’s not there right now, and if more developed countries follow Japan’s lead, they’re only damaging society by failing to supply the world with youth to replace old fucks, and helping other lethal organisms play evolutionary catch-up with humans.

The situation in Japan isn’t as dire in other developed countries, but birth rate is declining in countries commonly qualified as “developed,” for many (definitely not all) of the reasons Japan has scaled back on the reproduction thing. Something to look out for down the line.
