If you live by yourself or with people who don’t mind a giant cable of doom, sure, that’s fine.
If you live with people who don’t want a tripping hazard (or, y’know, children), a cable running through the house isn’t a reasonable solution.
Unless your router is in the middle of the room for some reason, there’s no reason that shit can’t be lined against the walls, under carpets, and around the corner of a doorframe.
No exposed wires or tripping hazards necessary.
I think you underestimate how awkward some homes are shaped.
And how not-OK most girlfriends/wives are when it comes to that sort of thing.
My router is like 10ft from my consoles and people still trip over the cord…even though it runs under my bed. They either find a way to trip over the part that’s under the bed or the 2ft of it that’s exposed.
I mean, I guess.
I live with my girl and two other roomates, and you can’t even see the cord coming from the upstairs into the downstairs unless you look at a specific space on the ceiling. If you have walls, doorframes and ceilings like any normal house should, you can’t sit there and tell me it isn’t possible to keep the wire out of the way where people walk. An adapter, a long ass ethernet cord and those tiny little hooks you can buy to string the cord along wherever you need all costs under 35 bucks.
Step yo wiring game up, foo.

Yeah, you can do some really creative layouts with cabling to hide the fact they exist. My wife is hella anal about that shit, but you’d be hard pressed to see my wires all over the fuckin’ place, even though damn near everything I need wired IS wired.
Ideally, you’d shove your cable in between the wall and the carpet as much as possible. When not possible, either feed it around a door frame edge, or feed it under the carpet. This is actually not that difficult if you get yourself some fish tape, though if you’re going to do so, try to find flat cords instead of round ones, as otherwise, you’re liable to feel 'em under the carpet.
If you’re needing to string a lot of shit, look into wire covers. These things are wall mountable, and are really tasteful ways of hiding a lot of cords at once. I use these on my TV to hide the dozens of shit flowing to and from the TV. Works wonders.
