Smash Bros Ultimate Thread- The game is finally hear to steal the hearts of all Smashers

Personally, I love the idea.
Casually it seems like a no-brainer to make matches more chaotic and fun.
Competitively… I think you could make an argument for it, but we’d need to know exactly how the meter system works before you could even begin trying to implement it.

I think it’ll be more of an issue of how strong they still are even when toned down.

We need to try the Final Smash Meter rule.

The video clearly SHOWED them being toned down if invoked via Meter (PK Starstorm covered far less space than usual). Sakurai is obviously aware of some of the concerns we might have about this, and it looks like he’s trying to toss us a bone.

We should start with Final Smash Meter ENABLED as a default rule. IF, and only IF, it proves to be troublesome (C-G mentioned fast characters might become too good due to this if they can just build up meter for a good kill option, for example) then we give them the boot. Otherwise, this is an exciting idea and deserves to be tried.

The meter seems to be based on a) time and b) damage received. Letting it sit will let it build gradually, but getting hit leads to more significant chunks being instantly gained. Stalling for meter seems to be only valid when you’re close to getting it, rather than zoning an entire match

Smash direct was ok. Ritcher and Simon being in the game is neat. So is Crom and Dark Samus. King K. Rool was a nice final reveal.

Sucks that Shovel Knight is only an assist trophy. There is plenty to go on to make him a full fledged character but oh well. I’m just glad they included him.

I LOVE the final smash meter. I think that is such a smart idea and should be implemented into tournament play. It adds a lot to the battle.

I really like some of the UI changes. giving the choice to add echo fighters to the og character is a nice touch in case the screen starts getting cluttered with the 23904832 new characters they’re gonna add

I approve of the name of the thread. Well done.

The god damn moon has an assist trophy and Kapn taking people for a ride on the bus are great!

There is just so much to love about this game right now.

Thanks, I was quite proud of that one

I’m glad DK gets more representation, but K.Rool doesn’t actually look very good.
I’m definitely going to be trying out the Belmonts. Dat Vampire Killer range.
Chrom looks like a fusion between Roy and Ike, but faster than both.
Dark Samus looks… like Samus? They don’t show enough to really note any differences that aren’t just aesthetic.

Alright, Character thoughts.

Simon has all the tools to be a great zoner. Axe for AA. Holy Water for space control. Cross for ground control. It’s all designed to allow him to Whip for free. Based on how he moves, every thing he does outside his specials is very high commitment.

  • UTilt is a sharply angled whip strike.
  • Fsmash is…well, you all know what it is
  • Usmash is straight up
  • Uair is a straight vertical
  • Fair/Bair is a straight horizontal
  • Dair is a dive kick
  • Ftilt is a lunging double kick
  • DTilt is a slide
  • Running Attack and Nair are basically his only quick, short range moves where he whirls the whip around himself.
  • I think the Melee Sheik Whip shenanigans are his jabs?
  • Whips attacks can grab the ledge it seems

Tilting seems to be a risk for Simon. The moves have long range and come out (comparatively) fast, but rob him of position. If anything they might be for escaping when he inevitably gets mauled by the likes of Sheik… just thinking about that match makes me question the existence of God.

I think they nailed down the part of old Castlevania where the difficult is commitment. I can see him having neutral trouble and being mauled as two of his greatest problems. He looks like he’ll be strictly a counterpick/inconsistent fighter. Great in his niche, absolutely awful if he’s forced out of his gameplan and into the scramble.

So K Rool looks like the lowest low tier to ever low tier. He looks so good but also so bad. As far as I can tell, he’s a heavyweight all-rounder, though given the lack of footage, I can see these impressions changing substantially and I could be totally off the mark…at least regarding gameplan. As far as I can tell, his crown Neutral B will be the cornerstone of how he works and I’ll get into that in a sec.

  • Ftilt Boxing Glove comes out slow and ends slow, but looks like it has a lot of power.
  • Dtilt buries opponents. Could be really useful, seems like the quickest ‘Bury’ move
  • Down B is a counter…ok
  • Armored Dash attack is mad laggy after the move connect, but being armored helps, especially as both the move and the armor come out quick compared to the only other advancing armored attack, D3’s dash
    -Fair that kills
  • That sweet grab is cool and all but I just realized that with the way he does it, he breaks their back with his head. That has a crown on it. So not only does he break your spine, he adds ‘Stepping on a Lego’ pain to boot.
  • The Blunderbuss seems to be quick to take the shot. I don’t know how the sucking in works though. EDIT: It looks like he can choose to fire normally, then hold the button to start sucking up. You can tell based on his animations that it’s not all one move. Sucking in something and firing it again seems to cause massive damage.

And now to talk about crown throw. On the surface, seems like a basic boomerang projectile. But looking at it, there might be a fair bit more. First off, K Rool is free to act while the crown is out, starting around at the apex if I were to hazard a guess. He has an animation to catch it. Most likely hitting him in this state will increase damage. Second, despite that he DOES have an animation for catching the crown. I wonder what would happen should he catch the crown in the animation of another move. A lot of his moves have loooong downtime, I could see this being Nintendo’s way of rectifying that. Even independant of all that, the crown, like the cross and unlike Link’s Boomerang, hits on the way out and on the way back, so if nothing else, it’s space control.

EDIT: Character videos with important info

Stagelist looks pretty good barring additional information.

With Chrom officially in the game, what does this mean for Robin’s Final Smash?

Also, Rathalos debuted on what was clearly a new stage. This leads me to consider one of the following possibilities:

  1. Is it possible it’s a new Xenoblade stage?
  2. Do we think it’s an ACTUAL Monster Hunter stage, which in turn might mean soft confirm for MonHun character?
  3. Since it also mentions Rathalos as a boss, could this be some kind of story mode stage?

I’m afraid you are the one misinformed. It still only hits once, not both times. If it hits an opponent on the way out, it will return to Link

This is most likely the case. I suspect we’ll see something along the lines of the old SSE or Adventure mode

I think it’s a mixture of both, actually. Based on when I used Link at EVO, the boomerang can hit on the way back, but I think it can only hit a character once.

King K Rool’s final Smash is mass genocide. That makes him the most evil character in smash

This. K Rool’s animations look so weird and off-putting, but I kind of love that about him.

I hope the blurred out mode in the direct is Space Emissary. I fucking loved that mode in Brawl.

I will say, that they didn’t show off a lot of K Rool’s normals, and as a Heavyweight, traditionally your specials are butt and your normals are great.

has an epiphany

Ooooooooooooooohhhhhh…Nintendo you clever bastards, I figured why you had D3 show up to do a fake out. It’s cuz it’s the K Rool trailer. And K Rool’s KNOWN for fakeouts.

Based on the general coloration/location of the blurred section of the main menu, I have a few guesses as to what it might be:

  1. The return of Smash Run and/or Smash Tour
  2. Some type of story-based mode (Subspace, Adventure, etc.)
  3. Stage Builder
  4. All of the above
